Fun fact! ‘Snails is short for ‘God’s nails’, as in the nails holding Jesus to the cross. Another popular medieval swear was ‘Swounds, which was short for ‘God’s wounds’ (again from the cross), and another was ‘by the rood!’, which was just swearing on a specific part of a medieval catholic church.
