On behalf of all of Sweden, I want to say that we are sorry for the yellow dresses. We are just as horrified as you are
Emma Larsson (SWE)
Jonna Adlerteg has reptured her meniscus and will miss the Olympics
“I'm sorry to say that I won't go to Rio this year. I ruptured my meniscus during the dismount in the bars final in Doha. I will have surgery on Monday and I'm hoping for a fast recovery. Although I'm heartbroken and devastated I'm happy that my ACL is still fine. Rio has been a goal of mine in many years and it's gonna take time for me to let that dream go but I will be fine eventually. I've got so much more to give ❤ “ (x)
In this interview she says that it is very tough at the moment, but she has her eyes set on Tokyo 2020 and firmly believes that her best years are still to come.
In translation: Jonna Adlerteg’s concern - might miss the Olympics
Link to the original article (in Swedish). I have slightly changed some parts to make it more understandable in English.
Jonna Adlerteg managed to win in her World Cup-comeback after a year off competing due to injuries. Simultaneously she hurt the knee she had surgery on earlier. - I am worried about the Olympics, since we have the Olympic qualifying competition in three weeks in Rio de Janeiro, says Adlerteg to SVT Sport.
Adlerteg, who took a nice world cup win in Doha, Qatar last Friday, is supposed compete in the Olympic qualifier in three weeks. An Olympic qualifier that now is in danger after the supposed knee injury she got during her dismount during the world cup event finals.
- It is hard right now, it is a lot of thoughts. I am trying to not think about it, but of course you wonder. I just want answers now, and I hope that the answer is as good as possible, says Jonna Adlerteg to SVT Sport.
- I am worried about the Olympics, since we have the Olympic qualifying competition in three weeks in Rio de Janeiro.
Home from Qatar
Jonna Adlerteg came back home to Sweden today, but the doctors visit will wait until tomorrow.
- The knee is not very swollen, but I have been told that I have to take it as easy as possible until the medical examination.
- I felt that something went wrong when I landed my dismount. But my landing was good, it was nothing bad about the landing itself.
In translation: Success for Adlerteg - but concerns about injury
(This article was originally published here. The article didn’t have the best grammar/sentence structure so some sentences were a bit hard to make understandable in English, but I tried my best.)
Talk about a successful comeback! Jonna Adlerteg competed in her first World Cup competition since she tore ACL. She won on her first try. But soreness in a knee after [the competion] is raising concern.
During the qualification round did Adlerteg score a 15,000 on the uneven bars. Her score from the final was not quite as good, but her 14,925 was still enough to win ahead of Brazilian Rebeca Andreade, who managed to score 14,250 points.
- It was a very nice routine, absolutely. But there was still some minor things that costed a few tenths. Like leg separation on a skill and such. But otherwise it was good,
said national team coordinator Helena Andersson Melander to SVT Sport.
“Will be examined on Monday”
More worrisome was the feeling [of pain] in her knee afterwards.
- She landed well, but apparently had felt [pain in] her knee afterwards, so we will see,
report Helena Andersson Melander, but explains that it is unclear how serious it is.
- We know to little. She will be examined when she comes home on Monday.
Olympic Games qualification in April
The competition was Adlerteg’s first in the World Cup circuit since she tore her ACL and injured her meniscus during the European Championships last year. The win is a really good statement of Adlerteg, who next month will compete to qualify to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Steingruber won vault
Marcela Torres finished fifth in the vault event final. One placement worse than the 27 year old’s qualification result. Swiss Giulia Steingruber won the final.
- It felt good today and I had fresh* legs. I am satisfied with my competition and it has given me good experience for the future,
said Torres on the national federation’s website.
* The direct translation is fresh, but it can’t really be explained in English. Basically she means that her legs felt good and weren't tired.

Jonna Adlerteg training a gorgeous Bhardwaj
Jonna is finally back on uneven bars! She looks really good, especially considering that she is still coming back from an ACL-tear
Marcela Torres doing a “Moors” UB dismount
EMMA LARSSON WON GOLD ON BEAM AT THE ANADIA WORLD CUP OMG OMG OMG
Marcela Torres couldn’t find her way onto the team in Argentina, paid her and her coach’s way around so she could compete, fell in love, moved to Sweden, and now at 26, she’s a national champion. Probably one of the most fun people to talk to, though it was me speaking in Engilsh to her boyfriend, who then spoke a mix of Swedish and Spanish to her, and then translated back to me. LOVE.
Do you know if the Swedish team will be doing another training trip to Brestyans (or any other US gym)?
I don’t think they will (at least not in the near future), since they just started training again and they haven’t written anything about it. But wouldn’t surprise me if they turn it around and invites another team to Sweden instead. The head coaches are really open to other teams, I know that the Romanian seniors was here this summer, and I think the Dutch team was here once as well (?).
Thank you so much for the question! :)
Post Worlds - Team Sweden Update (a summary of this article)
The picture shows six of the eight team members from this year's World Championships, only missing Veronica Wagner (on vacation abroad) and Nicole Wanström, who's back at her home gym in Stockholm.
Ece Ayan, who was the alternate in China, has switched gym and is now training together with the rest of Sweden's top gymnasts in Eskilstuna [Eskiltuna's gymnastics club is the swedish equivalent to Chow's, Texas Dreams, Parkettes and MG Elite all mashed together]. Ece moved in to team mate Lovisa Estberg's house, and Ece, Lovisa, Kim Sungmang and Emma Larsson are all in the same class in high school!
Then there is a really cute part about how the girls love spending time together, and then about the training approach. During the winter the focus is to get back in fantastic physical shape, and in January starts the preparation for this year's competitions, with focus on the European and World Championships. At the moment do they train for 27,5 hours a week, excluding physical therapy and a short pass on Saturdays. They train in the mornings and afternoon's, always eat lunch together and Jonna and Ida (who graduated this spring) usually drive the rest of the team to school.
At last Emma Larsson talks about her training and motivation; "I'm where I want to be, I'm here because I want to, how can someone believe something else [she's referring to the huge controversy the Swedish Gymnastics Federation went trough a while ago]? Sometimes when I get the question if training 30+ hours a week is exhausting I can get really angry. I'm not a robot or someone's marionette doll! Of course it's hard sometimes, all things are, including school and work, but I know what I want."
The Swedish and US teams (minus Kyla) after podium training yesterday!
Team Sweden update
Training has been really good so far, everything is coming together (they're all a bit starstruck since they're training together with the US though). Nanning has been an excellent host city so far, there's an special car lane for the buses, there's advertisement for the Championships everywhere and the food is top notch!
Jonna Adlerteg has unfortunately injured her foot and will probably only compete bars, but they are still feeling confident and can't wait to compete!
(If you are wondering why there's 8 girls in the picture, it's the 7 team members + Ida Gustafsson, who was originally on the team but got injured)
Team GB had a scavenger hunt at 2011 Worlds and one of the tasks was to take a picture holding a Russian. I asked Danusia about the other tasks :)
