lol yeah we need to talk about this one

regardless of whether or not marta is a mellow sweetheart now at the age of 800 or however old she is, neither she nor her husband should have been placed in any position of power or authority within USAG at all. it’s genuinely a sad state of affairs in my mind when people like the karolyis are not only accepted by the gymnastics community but lauded as brilliant and compassionate coaches and/or administrators. both bela and marta are serial child abusers and have been since the commencement of their careers back in romania…and even if you discount testimony from people like jennifer sey and dominique moceanu who the gymternet tends to find disagreeable, the record clearly shows they continued with their abusive techniques in the united states.

if you don’t have time to read it, here are some of the worst abuse allegations coming from romanian gymnasts and staff members:

obviously, the blatant physical violence (aside from forcing gymnasts to compete while injured) couldn’t continue here in the united states, so the karolyis by several accounts switched to verbal/psychological abuse - calling gymnasts horrible names, insulting their weights and appearances, withholding attention/affection as punishment, pitting all of the girls against each other, etc.

no one with such a substantial and profound history of child abuse has any business being anywhere near children, let alone coaching them. i don’t care how many gold medalists have been produced under their supervision, these people are fucking criminals, and their methods were clearly and unquestionably abusive.

i know that some of you are going to come back at me with the “BUT EVERYONE COACHED LIKE THAT BACK THEN LOL” argument. please don’t. first of all, that’s a ridiculously shitty argument regardless of whether or not it’s true. you’re honestly going to tell me that we should all sit here and forgive/overlook monsters like the karolyis just because there were similar monsters all over the gymnastics world at the time? do you not see how goddamn ridiculous and disgusting that argument is? you can’t absolve someone of blame for fucking up massively just because someone else, somewhere, allegedly, is fucking up also, and even IF every single other coach on the face of the planet had been beating their gymnasts the karolyis are certainly intellectually capable of independently deducing the fact that beating 10 year olds to within an inch of their lives is not a safe or rational training method.

second, and this ties in with what i just said, even IF the common thinking in the 70s was “beat the shit out of your gymnasts,” it’s firmly established NOW and has been for a while that those methods were harmful and abusive - there were and are unquestionably people within the sport now who were never associated with any of that behavior. who’s to say these people don’t have the ability or expertise necessary to be national team coaches or coordinators? why do we need to cling so strongly to two people with such awful track records when there are so many people out there who could replace them?

i know these two degenerates are the faces of american gymnastics and are here to stay until they drop over dead, so i’m not operating under the illusion that they’re going to be ousted by anything my dumb ass says or does

but please, gymternet, these people are child abusers and we need to stop glorifying them
