The cycle is broken, yet the ultimate price was paid.

Usagi has never existed.

Do you think any of the senshi play any instruments?

Mmmh, well we obviously know Michiru plays her violin, but to be honest I see her playing many others, she just enjoys playing the violin the most.

Regarding the others: first of all I know Haruka canonically plays the piano, I… don’t really see it. Like at most I see her memorizing a few pieces to play with Michiru, but I don’t see her playing it for fun or to learn. She doesn’t really strike me as a music or arts person.

I could see Mina easily picking up the guitar, I’m not sure what it is, but it really fits her! Also it would definitely help her future career. Maybe a keyboard as well.

I have the idea that Usagi still keeps her old recorder around and low key still enjoys playing it sometimes. She knows it never sounds great and probably never will, but she doesn’t expect it to, she’s just having a good time playing the old songs she was taught years back.

Ami I don’t see playing anything. She could’ve had an interest while she was younger, but I think Saeko would’ve quickly tried to usher any possible interest in arts and music out of Ami, unless it was required by the school. So as soon as Ami’s class didn’t require students to play the recorder, it would’ve been out of Ami’s sight.

I can see Rei playing the piano. It was probably something she was forced to learn when she was younger, since being able to play an instrument is an important social step for children coming from high status families. She plays it for herself and, when others ask, she says she doesn’t play it, most likely out of spite for her father.

Mako… idk. I don’t see her playing anything to be honest. I can see her singing every now and then, when she’s particularly happy, but I don’t think making music is much of interest to her.

Sorry this was probably lackluster, I’m not the biggest music nerd. You’ll learn to tell lol.

One thing that irks me across most iterations is how much Usagi’s supposed stupidity is played up - she strikes me more as just being an immature, underachieving slacker than actually being dumb. What's your take?

I understand where you're coming from. A lot of the time, it's played out for comedy sake, but I've never been a fan of that type of humor too much.

I feel like the best type of humor when it comes to Usagi revolves more around Usagi's crazy and absurd reactions rather than just characters pointing at her cause she fell on her face. For example, compare any gag of her getting a terrible grade to that really good comedy bit in episode 8 where the monster is quizzing her about Newton and gravity. To the question, "Why do apples fall from trees?" instead of Usagi giving a 'stupid' answer and that being the only joke, she instead talks back at the monster and says the most Usagi thing possible "don't ask me, ask an apple".

Which is not stupid perse, the funny part doesn't come from the fact that it's a stupid thing to say, but it's cause it's an absurd and illogical thing to respond and I feel like that describes Usagi's supposed 'stupidity' pretty well.

I think Usagi isn't so much an idiot as she is oblivious, immature and lazy, like you said. I don't believe she's as stupid as people think. If anything, she's actually quite people smart.

Most likely a lot of the perception of Usagi's supposed stupidity comes from situations where Usagi is put outside of her element and she eventually makes a fool of herself and the other characters call her an idiot.

Tho, it isn't so much stupidity as it is Usagi not being apt to more formal settings, which I'd gathegorize more as her being inept and dorky, while not reacting like other characters would, but instead being way too open for her own good and most a lot of times at the surprise and even discomfort of others.

If Usagi puts her mind to it, she could get better at studying and various other subjects, but she just chooses not to cause she's lazy.

Haruka would be the best parent out of any senshi, unironically. (Besides Mako ofc)

I got asked on twt to rank the senshi in terms of how good a parent they'd be.

Here's the very brief explanations for each.

  1. Makoto: Mako's the best mother and parent, hands down. She's the only one of the team I see having kids no matter what, she wants to have kids. She already has shown signs of an outstanding and patient nurturer, and she also has amazing skills of a stay at home mother and caretaker.
  2. Haruka: Haruka is very affectionate and loving. She has a gentle nature despite appearances, so I think that translates really well as a parent. She's not the most skilled at home ec, but she would learn new skills if it meant her child would grow up happier, esp if such skill is not compensated by her partner. She would go above and beyond to make sure her child would grow up loved and with the amazing childhood she herself didn't have. Also she's very fun and not too serious or stern.
  3. Artemis: Artemis I think would be an amazing father. He's a great mix of serious and fun. He takes responsibility very seriously while also not trying to talk down to the person he's responsible of (him and Mina feel on a very lvl playing field). He's not afraid to show support or offer encouragement in a simple and direct way.
  4. Luna: Luna is pretty similar, tho what I think would keep her a level below excellent is her high expectations. It's not something she can really control, but it's quite rare for Luna to offer any real praise. She holds her children at a quite high standard (the same high standard she keeps herself), so often achievements are almost expected while failures are not so much stepping stones as they are a 'must not'.
  5. Mamoru: Mamoru is a quite responsible and also gentle and loving man. He can be very fun and he's also shown being able to take care of himself at a very early age. What keeps him below Artemis I feel is his own self doubts and personal struggles. They would not stop him from ever loving his child or being there for them, but I can see him being unsure of how to tackle situations that a more experienced and mature parent would know how to handle. He still tries his best always, and he (tries) to not get too stuck on past wrongdoings.
  6. Ami: Ami, I feel would be sort of partner dependent. If her partner doesn't express a desire to have kids, I don't feel like she would choose to be a mother. She's afraid of repeating her mother's mistakes, and she would hate to take in a life she's not ready to properly provide for. That said, if she does have kids, then I feel like she would be a very good mother, if a bit of a busy one. She's gentle, understanding, loving, and also very importantly respectful. She wouldn't have a firmly high standard for her children, she wants them to succeed ofc, but she wouldn't let the need for high achievement ever get in the way of her children's happiness.
  7. Michiru: Michiru, I feel, is on a similar playing field as Ami. She'd be quite partner dependent, but I feel like she'd default as a mother more easily than her. The only reason I put her slightly below Ami is her standards. She wouldn't be suffocating, but Michiru's constant need for perfection from herself would inevitably bleed slightly on her kids. She would try HARD not to(cause she knows how badly it can fuck with a child's psyche), but it'd be on an almost subliminal lvl where I feel like her children would feel her disappointment even if she doesn't physically or verbally express it.
  8. Usagi: Usagi would survive it! lol It's not that I think she wouldn't be a decent parent, but I feel like she also has a lot of holes to fill in her parenting style and she really does need the right partner to fill those holes correctly to ensure her kids would grow up properly provided for. She can adapt, but if she has to do too much or try to balance too many things at once, she'd just crash. It wouldn't be an ugly crash. She'd get back up and try again, but those crashes would ensure her kids would need to learn how to be self-sufficient quite early on.
  9. Rei: Rei, I think, would be an excellent auntie, but that's it. She wouldn't choose to be a mother, most likely even if her partner wanted to (depends). If she would then... I don't think she'd be a good mother, sorry. She would hold her kids on an impossibly high standard because she holds herself to an impossibly high standard. She wouldn't think it's bad cause she wants greatness, and she knows her children are capable of greatness, much like she is. She'd fail to realize her selfl-projection would get in the way of her children's happiness.
  10. Minako: Minako I just don't see ever entertaining the idea of being a mother or having children. It sounds mean, but she wouldn't let them drag her down. She's not cut for it, and she knows it, so she'd rather keep that job for more apt people in society. She'd be a super fun aunt tho!
