i gotta remember this
we started the three-body problem show last night and i’m still thinking about this shot of a particle physicist’s bedroom that prominently includes the spine of a textbook that appears to just be titled “SCIENCE.” i was trying to find the book but as you might imagine this is a tough one. anyway this really sums up how they’ve done characterization of scientists. if you don’t mention the vague concept of science in every sentence you’re getting thrown out of the lab
#text tag#in the book this was more frictionless bc the characters imo were paper dolls being moved around in order to discuss Theories but they’re#trying to make us connect with the people in the show#textbook spine is black with the word in white in a serif font and some sort of blue ornamentation near the bottom

Yet another good reminder that even other Anglosphere authors have to basically arm-wrestle US book editors to be allowed to retain any vestige of their own dialect and culture in their writing and this is why lots of people have Opinions about American...everything.

i love puzzles and i LOVE people that are puzzles but it's not socially acceptable to treat people like puzzles. so yeah that's why i'm a writer

book from the sky (tianshu) xu bing, 1989-91
I was so excited to see a copy of this in real life bc it's something I studied in art history. this is a book that was typeset and printed by hand using wooden blocks but every one of the characters was invented for the sake of the piece and does not correspond to any word in the Chinese language
yes. he invented and hand carved 4000 characters. it is a CRAZY project that resulted in an intentionally unreadable book. I love it
