for the longest time i have wanted to make this kind of post but for the most part i’m the sort of person who is very “if i don’t like it i will ignore it” and keep to my own bubble, but after being in the snk fandom for many years and meeting different sorts of people i have decided- “it’s no good, i can’t hold my tongue any longer”
to my understanding, the misunderstanding is because people simply don’t know
i’m very sorry in advance if my thoughts seem a little convoluted, i will try to be as simplistic as possible
here is the matter: in western fandom if you like eren/levi or levi/eren everyone calls it “ereri”. there is only a small factor that exists that calls it “rivaere”/understand differentiation
there are many shippers who if they ship eren/levi they also ship levi/eren (there is no difference, because they are the same characters involved) and so “it doesn’t matter”. if levi or eren is involved romantically/sexually it is called “ereri”. it is all the same. who tops and who bottoms does not matter to a lot of people.
but this is mainly in western fandom. and there are people in western fandom who do care like in… japanese fandom (where everyone is getting these ship names). there is a divide and it is always maintained. there are fans who ship both, and fans who see it as two different things. why is that?
it is a matter of preference.
and the fact of this matter is: these are japanese ship names and they are specifically designed to indicate who tops and who bottoms.
“oh well i don’t care who does!” you might say, that is fine, everyone is free to ship and enjoy what they like.
but that is why ship names exist: to create order, to state preference and to make sure people are able to read/enjoy what they like. for example, if you do care who tops and who bottoms, something incorrectly labeled is going to make you upset. of course the creator of the fanwork can make whatever they like because it’s what they like, but shouldn’t they label it accordingly?
there is a tag for EVERYTHING, and it all has an order.
if you like eren/levi, (eren tops, levi bottoms) it’s ereri エレリ
if you like levi/eren (levi tops, eren bottoms) it’s rivaere リヴァエレ
for levi/eren in western fandom i also notice some ppl use “riren”, which doesn’t exist in japanese; japanese ship names typically are styled with the first couple syllables of x/y character’s names and do not utilise the last syllables like western ship naming likes to do
if we were going to make ship names from western style it’d be something like: eren/levi (erevi), levi/eren (riren), eren/levi/eren (ereviren)
if you like it when either tops or bottoms (ie they switch at some point within the work) there is a tag for that too it’s ererivaere エレリヴァエレ
on that note “why is this such a big deal?” the main reason i am making a post is i have very strict preferences myself and i’m tired of seeing mislabeled works, sometimes even stolen works
we are all using japanese ship names for our participation in this fandom
respect should be given and proper use should be exercised in this case. we are borrowing, and we should not borrow if we are not going to “use as intended”
if levi tops eren then it’s リヴァエレ(rivaere ie levi/eren) if eren tops levi it’s エレリ (ereri ie eren/levi) if you have both then you can use both tags or エレリヴァエレ (ererivaere ie eren/levi/eren or levi/eren/levi could also work but the other order is more popular)
but if your work ONLY has levi topping eren or eren topping levi you CANNOT use both tags because that is incorrect
it doesn’t matter if you like everything or not, the work itself is what it is and should be labeled to be what it is; if you’re using both tags to gain more notes or attention, please have more respect for your work!
if i have to see another reposted “with permission” fanart tagged with “ereri” and it’s by an artist who clearly only ships “rivaere” i’m going to doubt if there was permission granted in the first place and to top that off, the artist if they ever saw not only their art stolen but mislabeled, that’s just messed up! shame on you!
stop! no more mislabeling! if you want to use the japanese ship tags, please use them correctly!
please respect naming ordering! please respect people’s preference! please respect your fellow fans of this series and these characters! to do otherwise is rude and i’ve had enough (๑•̀o•́๑)۶ i’m not the only one! (๑•̀o•́๑)۶ let us rectify this problem! (๑•̀o•́๑)۶ tag correctly please! we are all here to have fun, it’s difficult to if we have to see content we don’t like or don’t care for
