the more I watch this episode the more I love this sequence. it's so important for the development of crystal and edwin's relationship, and I feel like it highlights their similarities so well, in the ways they think and act and also how they both just care so much.

both plagued by their respective hellish encounters, both so caring and so deeply kind despite their histories, both so willing to do anything to close this case; they initially bond over their fear of losing charles but it quickly becomes so much more than that. their dynamic works so well. I love it so much.

One of the things I'm missing the most when I think about not getting a season 2 (and, by the same token, one of the things I love seeing in fanfic) is getting to see more of Crystal and Edwin growing into a relationship.

I think their back-and-forth would start to be a real point of entertainment for both of them, still with sharp edges but with a thread of warmth underlying it that belies the snippy tones. I think Crystal would start to keep a mental list of all the things that she can tweak Edwin's tail about that will genuinely annoy him, but not cause any real harm (and a parallel list of things that aren't funny, that make him shut down for real or retreat into stiff formality or foist her off on Charles until he can get himself together.) I think they would slip effortlessly back and forth between snarking at each other and ganging up on the rest of the world (Charles and Niko excepted) while Charles watches with stars in his eyes.

I want to see them showing up for each other, defending each other with words and with magic and with the right piece of information at the right time. I want to see them looking to each other for honesty, because they both know how to be cruel when they have to, and sometimes you need someone to just tell you the truth. I want to see them both understanding what it's like to be someone who doesn't think of themself as kind, or likeable, or good, but is trying.

I have so much love for snarky characters who are kind and generous and caring, but not necessarily nice or comfortable. I adore the kind of complicated friendship where you know you can trust their kindness because you've seen them at their most ruthless. They make me crazy. They could be so good for each other. They are so good for each other. I want to see where it goes.

found this little snippet i wrote like a month ago, just a silly little idea, so it's not fleshed out lol

Charles confesses, and Edwin goes in for a kiss, but Charles stops him. Edwin is so confused, but Charles just goes, "Don't feel like you have to kiss me. We can be in love and not kiss. Just knowing that you know I love you is enough for me."

And Edwin is like ??? "I- That is absolutely lovely Charles, but why on earth do you think I was going to kiss you out of obligation and not simply because I wanted to?"

"Well, it was that first night, wasn't it? Asked if you missed kissing, and you said no. Figured it just wasn't something you were into. But- wait. You wanna kiss me?"

Edwin rolls his eyes, but it's pure affection. "With each passing second, it's becoming more of a need than a want Charles Rowland."

OKAY SO @montythehumancrow and i were talking about this beautiful, beautiful gif made by @fan-a-tink and we came to somewhat of a realization.

in E2, when edwin is telling charles why he dislikes crystal, charles says “well, that sounds a lot like you, doesn’t it? wait-maybe THAT’S why i like her so much. see? we’re figuring this out!” which is a huge payneland moment, ofc.

but, the gif above is a post-confession clip, and look at the way he’s looking at crystal in comparison to edwin.

it’s like he lights up inside.

he saw attributes in crystal that he knew to be there in edwin and said “hey, look! i can like this one romantically!” because she’s a girl.

i’m not saying he wasn’t attracted to her, because he was, but it says a lot that he was so quick to compare them that early on when all three of them knew that he had expressed interest in her.

he was so quick to be romantically involved with someone he immediately saw his best friend in. because he loves edwin and doesn’t know how to admit that.

but he can admit that he likes crystal and he can admit he thinks they’re similar. that is, until edwin confesses and he’s forced to think about things from that angle.
