@crystal-week Day 2: Friends

the more I watch this episode the more I love this sequence. it's so important for the development of crystal and edwin's relationship, and I feel like it highlights their similarities so well, in the ways they think and act and also how they both just care so much.

both plagued by their respective hellish encounters, both so caring and so deeply kind despite their histories, both so willing to do anything to close this case; they initially bond over their fear of losing charles but it quickly becomes so much more than that. their dynamic works so well. I love it so much.

One of the things I'm missing the most when I think about not getting a season 2 (and, by the same token, one of the things I love seeing in fanfic) is getting to see more of Crystal and Edwin growing into a relationship.

I think their back-and-forth would start to be a real point of entertainment for both of them, still with sharp edges but with a thread of warmth underlying it that belies the snippy tones. I think Crystal would start to keep a mental list of all the things that she can tweak Edwin's tail about that will genuinely annoy him, but not cause any real harm (and a parallel list of things that aren't funny, that make him shut down for real or retreat into stiff formality or foist her off on Charles until he can get himself together.) I think they would slip effortlessly back and forth between snarking at each other and ganging up on the rest of the world (Charles and Niko excepted) while Charles watches with stars in his eyes.

I want to see them showing up for each other, defending each other with words and with magic and with the right piece of information at the right time. I want to see them looking to each other for honesty, because they both know how to be cruel when they have to, and sometimes you need someone to just tell you the truth. I want to see them both understanding what it's like to be someone who doesn't think of themself as kind, or likeable, or good, but is trying.

I have so much love for snarky characters who are kind and generous and caring, but not necessarily nice or comfortable. I adore the kind of complicated friendship where you know you can trust their kindness because you've seen them at their most ruthless. They make me crazy. They could be so good for each other. They are so good for each other. I want to see where it goes.

… thinking about Crystal Palace…neglected girl with super empathy….no wonder she turned out like that. She knows exactly how cruel people can be, including those who are meant to love you.

Day 23: Sight 👀

It's Kassius Nelson's turn to be appreciated. Let's goooo

Crystal has so much strength and she's so powerful in how she stands up for others, especially other women. And then there's also soft pookie Crystal and sassy snarky Crystal, and she is just such a beautifully complex character. And so much of that is down to Kassius and the incredible strength she has poured into of her performance of Crystal. I can hear these gifs because they're so iconic.

Kassius, you're a queen and we don't deserve you! Thank you for giving us the best version of Crystal out there, and for seeing Crystal with all of her strength and all of her flaws.

Like, Crystal is a very caring and lovely girl and it's just a pity that misoginoir makes so many people see any actions of black girls as evil/malicious/less naive than other characters.

Day 13 of DBD Promptober: Demons

I think the thing about the 1x01 charles/crystal/edwin dynamic is that. they're all valid in their own way, but they're also being messy (teens!!!) about it and could've all done a better job understanding where the other is coming from.

yes, it's understandable edwin would be upset being close to someone possessed by a demon (being of hell and whatnot) his fear for his safety is valid. but that doesn't mean he isn't also being unfair to crystal. she's a 16 year old girl with none of her vital memories and thus with minimal options of where to go and how to begin finding herself. her case was not finished.

crystal is understandably upset and disoriented coming out of a demonic possession missing key memories about herself. her initially inviting david in doesn't negate him being a manipulative, toxic dick. she is, however, at times caught up in her own problems, after specifically advocating for the case they are on. she doesn't understand where edwin is coming from, although she also couldn't even begin to fathom what he's suffered through.

charles is right to advocate for crystal. it's not right to leave behind a 16 year old girl who can't remember who she is and has nowhere to go and who might I add IS NOT white. and who is still be being haunted by the demon. but that doesn't mean that he wasn't also letting his attraction to her play into it. and he could have been more understanding of edwin's fears of the situation.
