Nicky's Rio son too.

I feel there were so many lines that imply this and the finale is starting to make more sense - especially because the dandelion in the trial!

Jen explains that Green Craft™ is about the cycle of all living things - growth and decay in constant flow. So it's not just about dying but being born too.

So it would track that Rio's love for Agatha was so strong that it actually created life - Nicky. However, there would be consequences to this because proper balance had to be maintained somehow. Rio probably even warned Agatha about it, but Agatha always believes she is above the rules so in her head she probably thought she had every right to Nicky (maybe even her "prize" that she alludes to in their final confrontation). This would really add to Rio's hurt - Nicky was her son too. She thought she was giving Agatha a gift of life, but instead Agatha sees her as this cruel "evil" that "gave her nothing". To her Rio is the one who just "took."

It feels like it is also implied by Rio at the start of the episode when she says "This walk with another woman's son on a road that doesn't...". She could be referring to Nicky being her son.

But I think Agatha finally accepts her truth during the final trial when she sees the dandelion seed in her cameo. She even says "Out of Death - life" as she grows it because she finally understands the literal implications of that phrase.

That Dandelion is representation of Nicky. And sure enough, as soon as the flower grows and blossoms, it quickly enters the final stage - when it turns into the seeds that can be scattered by the wind again and continue the cycle of life. Because guess what, "dandelions produce seeds asexually by apomixis, where the seeds are produced without pollination, resulting in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent plant".

When Nicky is born, we could probably assume it was indeed asexual reproduction - Agatha says she didn't use a spell or incantation, but instead he was made from scratch (obviously a clever nod to his name). On one hand it could be read like Agatha is astonished how something this magical could happen without actually using any witchcraft. However, this also feels like a suggestion that maybe she is just amazed at how he could possibly exist. Kathryn Hahn in her recent interview alluded to how the witches didn't need men, babies were just born. So it was Rio's "dandelion seed" that made it happen.

It is the second characteristic of dandelion species is what seals the deal for me - "the offspring being genetically identical to the parent plant". Nicky as the offspring of Death needs bodies to survive in this realm. During his birth Rio says she can offer only time, because she can maintain the balance, as long as Nicky gets his bodies.

That's why she hates Rio and calls her evil - not because of Rio herself, but because of what her "genetics" did to Nicky. Agatha would rather have people believe that she is this evil witch killer that traded her child for the Darkhold, than anyone to know the awful truth that it was Nicky who was the cause of the killings.

In the flashbacks, there are those remarks about how they haven't "eaten for days" and that whenever Nicky was poorly he said he was hungry. Agatha said she couldn't create the food for him (and protect him from what's coming). She could've cooked that goat they had with them if they were really that hungry (btw, I still believe that goat is Senor Scratchy), but that wasn't the "food" that Nicky meant.

And just like Billy, Rio couldn't just take Nicky. He had to "turn himself in". It was his choice not to kill any more witches. On the day Nicky dies, he says "My mother needs me home". I think he is talking about Rio here, since he usually calls Agatha "Mama". This is the moment the decides for himself and goes home to Death.

I feel like this opens the possibility that we will indeed see Nicholas Scratch in the future (and have a role similar to the one in the comics). That maybe even he might not have "died" because he is an offspring of death, so he just exists in some Underworld realm, where he no longer needs bodies to survive. Maybe Agatha might have hoped that by killing more and more witches, she will bring Nicky back to life/this realm?

And the Ballad really was a protection spell she made for him too?

This would also be a more plausible explanation why Agatha went to kiss Rio when Billy asked "Is this how Nicky died?". I feel this was more of an apology to Rio for hating her for Nicky's treatment, because she finally understood why she had to do it?

Post finale thoughts

In short: dshjfhsiKDNQWDdaISFAdFKDN;FVh

I am a mixed bag of emotions, so I will have to revisit this later. Jac did stick her landing in the same way she did in Wandavision - offered a lot of heartbreak and lots of potential for the future. So I hope this means we get season 2!

  • Kathryn Hahn has all the awards in the bag
  • Ghost Agatha slays.
  • All of the Agatha's different eras outfits slay.
  • Rio being DEADLY SERIOUS slays.
  • Righteous Billy doesn't slay
  • Agatha is literally refusing to die. Slay! (But Rio said she hated ghosts. Great.)
  • Jen getting her powers back was so touching, even though I didn't care much for her character. I wish they developed her more, because he arc seemed very rushed.
  • Yet this whole Agathario strand just feels so unsatisfying and not at all like Jac or Kathryn or Aubrey made us believe. I would rather give up that kiss in favour of them showing us more scenes of them actually talking, fleshing out their history, rather than just a whole lot of creepy lurking. It feels like ep.1 were the most charged scenes and that's just sad.
  • For Agatha to kiss Rio and die, implies they could not kiss before. Meaning when Agatha was going for that kiss in ep.4, this was her actually offering herself to Rio, because she thought Rio spared him? Or in sacrifice? I'm not sure I like that
  • Agatha and Nicky's flashback was just one massive heartbreak. Well done to all of you who guessed that it was Nicky who created the ballad. BUT WHY DID YOU HAVE TO BE SO RIGHT. It really hit, every single line.
  • But what's up with that goat? That is senor scratchy right?
  • I don't understand why Lilia is dead. Agatha said Jen got what she was missing and that's why she got out. And Lilia got what was missing too. She accepted her powers. She realised what she was missing was a coven. She got that. So did she actually die?
  • So episode 1 was a lot of foreshadowing... just not the way I thought!
  • I am not going to say anything about Billy's character, as I fear in my current state I will do him and the writers a great disservice. I will come back to this... when I cool down. And sleep. Need some sleep.

I'll see you at the end.

I can't believe we are here already. I'm excited and sad in equal measure.

This show has been such a delightful surprise. I went into it without expecting anything in particular - I loved Wandavision and I loved Kathryn Hahn and that was that. I didn't expect to be literally bewitched by the magic I saw on the screen.

Put simply, the power of AAA is that it is clearly a product of love - from Jac Schaeffer, the actors, the writers, the directors, the set and costume designers, the composers (and THE GODDAMN LOPEZES!), the producers... I could go on.

That level of dedication shines despite (or maybe BECAUSE) the low budget, and it has two massive effects: 1) it creates a truly compelling and stunning story; 2) it sends a very loud, clear message that representation not only matters, but is NEEDED.

Of course it's not the first show that does this, but I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to me to watch something in mainstream media that is centred around sapphic women where their sexuality is NOT the plot of a show. It is not something anyone ever needs to ask about or question. They don't pretend to be younger characters either, they are all 38+ and proud of it, as they should. Instead they focus on what actually matters - their rich, complex stories.

But the diversity is also within the creators - of the producers, half of them were women, headed by superb Mary Livanos (a queer woman herself), costume designer Daniel Selon (also queer), all of the directors were women and there is also of course a diversity of ethnicities. I am a big believer of the power of diversity as it allows you to go places you wouldn't normally consider, and really round the story. And I love this quote from Jac Schaeffer who states "My prerequisites for writers who work with me are first, they have to be kind, respectful humans."

And what stories the writers tell! In the limited time they had, they managed to create these seven multidimensional characters that were all different, yet similar in a lot of ways. My only criticism would be that we really could do with longer episodes to actually allow some more meaningful conversations and connections. All beautifully complemented by the visuals - the practical sets as well as the costumes. I love how the costume designer took his time to consult with the actors for their interpretations, before even starting to create every single design.

And on top of the great character stories and visual , we then have an engaging plot with mysteries to solve on the way. I cannot emphasise enough how fantastic it felt to follow the breadcrumbs. To spot all those little details that would foreshadow what's to come. The different ways they appeared - through dialogue, visual clues, music themes, lore symbolism and so so many art and literature references. The knowledge and confidence that they were left there on purpose too, because the creators took the show seriously - it literally felt like finding little personal messages!

This is why I've decided I need to pick them up and then try to piece them all together - just to see if I could make my sense of it, since the creators clearly put so much love and effort. No other show has ever made me do it to this extent. And it's been so much fun! I loved I wasn't alone with this and that I could discuss and read others' theories too. It's like we've formed this awesome coven.

So in my post-AAA blues, I don't think I will have it in me to just take my "murder board" down. I feel there is still so much to explore so I will probably keep looking for any more cool details to cheer me up.

I've not been actually particularly precious about whether or not my theories could be right or wrong. If some of them are - great, bonus! If not, also great, I am looking forward to being surprised!

Although we haven't seen the ending yet, I have ultimate trust in Jac. After all, she once said:

"I believe so strongly in sticking the landing and it's always up to the audience whether or not you truly stick the landing. But I believe that you have to put all your energy toward that. It's your job to try the best you absolutely can to stick the landing. You have to plot your mysteries, figure out what they are. It’s like a good murder mystery. The feeling that you want at the end of a murder mystery is you want to be surprised, but not. It still needs to feel within the realm of possibility, right? It needs to make sense and still surprise you."

So I trust we will have a solid ending, wherever it lands. And afterwards - I will always remember the time when a show has made me feel this way. Thank you!

Locking my finale predictions

Here we are, one last time.

GENERAL BINGO MANIFESTATIONS:

  • it will be epic
  • the episodes better be 1h each
  • I will probably start ugly crying early on
  • Agathario kiss
  • Agatha will talk to a goat
  • Someone will say something in Spanish
  • Jen will be the first one to loose her cool
  • Billy will have another "bratty teenager" moment
  • We will see more references from Billy's bedroom
  • Agatha will cackle
  • Jen will say something snarky but brilliant
  • We'll have another version of the ballad (maybe not in a song form though)

THE PLOT KEY POINTS PREDICTIONS: My overall theory about the plot is laid out in this post here, if you fancy a longer read. The main points:

  • Back to my original theory that the Witches Road has always been a con created by Agatha herself. She and Rio have always been the Death Wish on the road that killed the witches
  • Agatha met Lorna Wu and wanted to con her into the Witches Road, but saw little Alice and spared her. Lorna was so taken by the myth that she wrote her own song.
  • In turn, Lorna's song was the one who influenced Billy and his wish to walk the Road. It is what ultimately pushed him to think of the Witches Road and he wished it into existence.
  • Billy's jumper pattern changes the second they enter the Road - some of the runes turn upside down.
  • The Road events actually take place under Westview at first, but after first trial Billy says "I wish we could go home", and so they actually make their way back to Agatha's house. The last trial is in the basement
  • Mrs Hart lives because after the trial Billy actually sends her back to Westview (and also she expressed the with before "I hope this is the end") - when he said that Sharon was dead, his sweater actually looked momentarily "the correct way up", the same pattern he had in Westview. Also, Agatha knew Sharon wasn't dead/real because why would they have to even dig her a grave when they could've just let the ground "swallow her" like it tried in previous episode? Sharon's dead body must have been an illusion
  • The tunnels have only been opened by their summoning spell in ep.4, and it's a realm between life and death - they have a Path Behind, the Road and the Path Ahead - Jen will use the Path Ahead to get out as she knew about the tunnels before
  • Billy will simply be able to wish his way out of the Road spell
  • Agatha's locket protects her from Death but also prevents her from telling anyone about Death or even say her name. That's why she had to con Rio into telling the coven her intentions in the sound booth.
  • in the Earth trials they will be in a morgue but to pass they will need to find the answers where the truth is buried - i.e. inside each others minds. So Jen will have to realise she is not bound any more. Billy will realise/admit he is the one behind the road and he will accept that he is both Billy and William. Agatha will have to give up her locket so she can reveal her truth about Death and The Witches Road con
  • As Billy and Jen get out of the Road, Agatha will face Rio
  • Agatha will die by syphoning Rio's powers. But in the end it will be Rio who dies and becomes one with Agatha, so that she is never alone again. Rio says in ep.1 that she can make Agatha wish she was dead - maybe Agatha makes that wish, or maybe Rio wanted to die all along because she hates her "job" and is lonely without Agatha
  • Alice will take over as Death, guarding the doors between life and death - she will be back to her role as a security guard - talk about typecasting!
  • There is some timey-wimey time loop/illusion going on and Billy could be trying to repair the past events, reliving the trials over and over - e.g. by putting a pentacle sigil on the basement door and by using new spell to release Agatha (the spell was left to him by Lilia), but it's Agatha who always messes something up
  • So Agnes O'Connor in ep.1 is actually investigating Agatha's death and trying to remember what happened on the Witches Road - the mention of ravine/creek is a nod to Rio, who at this point is actually already dead/inside Agatha. Agatha is the only one that can "solve the case"
  • Rio's first appearance is actually in ep.7, because Lilia finally accepts Death's presence. Then she instructs Rio to go and warn Agatha in Westview about Salem Seven coming in ep.1
  • At the end we will all cry and be mentally broken because it won't be clear if Agnes O'Connor actually solves her case or not.

I honestly tried to make it a short post, but it never works!!!!!

Calling it now in the next trail Agatha has to give up her locket with what I am guessing to be her and (Rio’s) son’s hairs in it to escape. In one of the promos we see that she doesn’t have it anymore.

Here it is. My final theory.

it’s a crazy long one, but it’s how I work it out in my head because it makes a lot of sense

SUMMARY

I think they are in some kind of a loop and/or an illusion, since “time flow is an illusion” and also there is some time hopping because of the tunnels. So when we first see “Agnes O’Connor”, this is actually already Agatha figuring out what happened to them on the Witches Road. And Rio doesn’t meet the coven for the first time until she meets with Lilia in the tunnels. I think in the earth trial episode, they will be in a morgue and it will be Billy’s trial (as we know, Rio is “a tourist”). Agatha will give up her necklace and let Billy access her thoughts. Following the trial Billy and Jen will get out, but Agatha will stay and go back to Rio. Whatever fight happens, I think Agatha will absorb Rio’s powers and die as a result. Rio could potentially be just part of Agatha from then on. Alice will become security guard (again!) as she takes over as Death. Billy will be able to go back in time and/or illusion (because they are actually still in Agatha’s basement), trigger Agatha into Agnes O’Connor so she can help him “solve the case” and try to fix what went wrong – e.g. by using a different spell this time – the one Lilia must have left him in the spell book. Whether he succeeds or not, I think it will be left open to interpretation!

THE ROAD

I am back to my original theory I wrote way back that the Road has always been a con created by Agatha herself. She’s crafty, she’s clever and she’s power hungry. So she wrote the “summoning spell” herself and kept conning the “undeserving” witches for a few centuries. Maybe that’s how she met Rio – but she couldn’t syphon Death’s powers, therefore making Rio that one witch that walked out of the Road with Agatha. But her past is eventually catching up with her, because “revenge is a witch”.

I think Agatha has met Lorna Wu (in her “Jolene” days) and tried to convince her too, but then she saw little Alice with her, so she “spared” Lorna. As we know, Agatha has a soft spot for kids (spared Jen because of her midwife work) so this would track. Maybe she told Lorna she couldn’t take her or that she wasn’t worthy of the Road after all etc. But Lorna was so taken by Agatha’s wonderful words about the road, that she decided she will try it on her own – thus writing the rock version. It’s ironic then that in turn Lorna’s influence was eventually what created the idea in Billy’s mind and then tricked Agatha. Talk about the past catching up with you!

This brings us to what we see in AAA – I think this really is “The Witches Road”. The first and the last one, but I think it is a real deal. Billy created it but I don’t think he realises this, or how much control he has. He didn’t know the road wasn’t real. But because of his powers, he still managed to channel his intentions to summon it – he is the Magician, as explained by Lilia. I think what did the trick was simply him saying to Agatha “I want you to take me to the Witches Road”. And so she did, because magic took the path of least resistance. That’s why the road is so heavily influenced by Billy’s bedroom – almost every element we see can be found in that room.

And that’s why Agatha was so surprised by it when the door appeared – she was simply planning on stealing the power from the witches. Though curious why she told Lilia about her limitations before – I think this is her test for the witches. Because if she tells them the truth about herself, and they end up blasting her anyway, then it’s “on them” that they get killed. In that way she must think them stupid and “undeserving” and therefore it’s not her fault?

WESTVIEW

With the original idea of the road being a myth, I am a bit confused where the Salem Seven comes from. Why would a coven go so horribly feral? And with them being young children to start with, wouldn’t Agatha try to influence them to form her own coven? Maybe there is some sort of a curse involved. When Alice’s demon was released, Agatha said “once vengeance is loosened, you can’t reel it back in” – I wonder if this has relevance?

I wonder if Salem Saven has always been trapped in those tunnels under Westview. I was always intrigued by Agnes quote “If there’s one thing we can agree on is that these cases are always about the place, the specific small town, the history of it, the people in it, the secrets buried beneath it.” It’s a curious line and if we go with the theme of the show that it was Agatha All Along, then it would fit that the secret she buried were the Salem Seven themselves, and Agatha’s crimes are catching up with her. It is equally of note that Rio even quips that who better to solve the case than “One of Westview’s very own. Yeah, you’ve lived here your whole life.” Of course, this could be just a line to make Agatha realise she is not this imaginary Agnes character. But then again, if you remember from Billy’s internet search about Agatha, she was seen on the Titanic disaster – the ship was sailing to New York, so not far from New Jersey at all. And the Hindenburg disaster actually happened as the aircraft was landing in Lakehurst, New Jersey! So maybe Westview at one point was her home? But she didn’t know it as Westview? (side note, I think that maybe the note about her traveling the Eastern Seaboard is actually directly linked with how the witch trials panic has taken over many of those states in 17th and 18th century. It was Agatha all along!).

Billy was investigating Westview because of the Hex anomaly. But there was also an article shown that “Strange occurrences persist to haunt Westview”, even 3 years after the Hex. So I wonder if this underground incomplete transit system has something to do with it.

Also curious how Billy has been investigating New Jersey towns – there is a map on his bedroom floor that circles a few of the towns and says “These 6 towns all link to the 7th town. Where are 8-9?” The 7th town in the middle is not very clear, but it looks like it’s in the vicinity of Fort Dix (a Marvel easter egg?). Could Eastview and Westview be the missing towns 8 and 9?

There are also interesting parallels to East, or Eastview – starting with the “Agnes of Westview” being a literal copy of “Mare of EASTtown”, the intro contains a scoreboard of a match between Eastview and Westview. Billy is originally from Eastview but it is Agatha herself who’s the Wicked witch of the East.. These two locations are inexplicably linked.

BILLY’S JUMPER

Billy’s sweater is adorned with runes – I think they are some forms of different sigils. On Billy’s wall, he was investigating sigils and there were lots of similar symbols that he researched. Also he wrote that some sigils can be recharged and used to strengthen energy, while others will be activated when destroyed – creating bursts of energy. So I think Billy tried to build some of them into his sweater. It’s interesting that they only really made proper appearance after he started researching Agatha online. So maybe he build some of them as protection or maybe added some after time looping.

I think there are essentially two main versions of the jumper. The first one was worn by him in Westview – during interogation and gathering coven etc. Most notably it has a clear pentacle on his right, an eye on his left and the face of Alice’s monster on his right shoulder. The centre “pleats” are almost aligned – the top one is a close line, the bottom one is a bit torn.

But THE VERY SECOND they enter the Witches Road, the pattern is immediately different. The middle pattern is totally turned upside down – the top is now the torn “pleat” and the bottom is the solid line one. The eye moves lower down, the pentacle seems to disappear and seems replaced with a six-pointed start lower down. The demon face is still there in roughly the same place. So this suggests they have gone upside down on the Road? Or that they really just are under Westview, in the tunnels.

That second jumper pattern stays with us for most of the time on the Witches Road EXCEPT for the moment at the end of the water trial when Sharon dies. The pleat pattern is temporarily reversed and the pentacle appears – just for that scene. So I think Sharon is probably fairly safe and that one was actually Billy’s illusion. Also, if the body was real, why would they even need to dig a grave for her? From what we’ve seen already, the ground would’ve easily swallowed her. So I think Billy used his magic to send Sharon back out to Westvew, safe as a kitten.

As the story progresses, we see more and more of the jumper and more symbols. There is a big bird engraved on his back and I wonder how that will play in the story – maybe as a messenger? (does not quite look like a phoenix reborn or anything). From the moment he breaks the sigil, Billy’s hoodie also start turning more red. I wonder if that’s the chaos magic influence?

TIME SLIPPING

There is definitely something going on with the road – whether it’s a time loop, a spell illusion, I am not sure. On top of Billy’s changing jumpers, there are some crucial inconsistencies that I think are intentional and could hint there are different versions of the trials. Things I’ve noticed:

  • There is that shot of a photo of a boy disappearing in Agatha’s “office”. It could be a sign of spell breaking, but maybe there is more to it
  • When Billy casts the release spell on Agatha in ep.6, there is a quick side shot of him, suddenly having a black thumb and the spell book was opened on a completely different spell. There was ink smudged on one page. This would explain that Agatha picked this little detail in her Agnes persona as she spotted it in the interogation – I believe this is Billy using a different spell left to him by Lilia, when she handed him the spell book back in ep.7. When he did the original spell before, it looked like he broke a lot of rules set out in the spell-book, where it said that the consequences of that would be that the spell became corrupted. This could explain why Agatha couldn’t remember Mrs Hart’s name and kept using wrong words and expressions. But this new spell from Lilia could be what he was meant to use all along and to fix the original “corruption” and set Agnes investigation in the right direction. It would also give a new meaning to that "I don't want to go back to the closet again"
  • Episode 5 (Agatha’s trial) had so many inconsistent shots – the hands and bracelets and nails and even skin colour kept changing between different ouija board shots. The games pile where Ouija was first sat (one of them said “Clue”) kept changing too. And right by the door we see troll dolls. But they change too – in one scene there are only two – one with green and one with yellow hair. And in many other scenes there is an additional baby troll with dark pink and blue hair and a card with red cross symbol next to it. Seems like important change
  • When Agatha does her tarot reading in ep.7, we don’t see her card placements, but when she slams the final card down, we see it and we see most of other card slots are empty. But in the next shot we see a full tarot spread again.

I’ve been wondering about what all of these mean. It definitely feels like there is an illusion, or maybe Billy has this reset loop going on, until he gets what he wants?

Edit: the trolls could signify how Lilia (Fate) and Rio have always walked hand in hand, but now baby Alice takes over (or joins as the Maiden of the Triple Goddess trio)

THE LOCKET

I believe the hair inside the locket really is Nicky’s – every time Agatha picks the locket, Nicky’s theme plays. However, I think there is more to it – I think because of how strong emotions are attached to it, the locket also serves as Agatha’s protection amulet – in a sense that Rio can’t take her and maybe that’s why Billy can’t read her thoughts. Nicky’s protecting his mum.

Maybe that’s why we also have those parallels where Ouija rules say “Do not ask about death” and Agatha never seems to answer any questions about both Rio and Nicky, or even say Rio's name - ever. Billy questioned Agatha about Rio before fire trial, then about Nicky after it. In both cases she either didn’t say a thing or changed subject. It seems to be one thing that Agatha is literally unable to talk about, yet she can’t be without it.

ALICE & THE “TIME” TUNNELS

Alice also has a protection amulet – and her mother has put a lot of love into her, so I think it serves as a similar thing to Agatha’s locket. Death can’t take Alice. She also has once borrowed Rio’s own dagger to draw circles and cast protection magic with it – it could be significant for someone to use Death’s own dagger?

I think all this leads to more foreshadowing – maybe she will come back and continue her job as a door security guard – much how she did at the “Hot topic” shop. Maybe she lives or maybe she becomes an incarnation of Death? (if Agatha kills Rio) The reason I think this is because when Alice dropped to the floor, seemingly dead, her hand landed on a page that said “you stay here and guard the door”. BUT that is likely the door that they previously accidentally opened when they tried to summon the green witch – between the realm of life and dead? (and it was blood moon then too)

The door is in the underground tunnels. I think this is even pointed to us in Alice’s tarot card – the top symbol usually represents the character’s necklace, but in case of Alice’s, it’s a weird sign. I first theorised that it is simply a spelling representation of her rune on the protection necklace, but I think there is more – that sign actually looks a bit like the tunnels – that very location where Lilia and Jen saw Salem Seven. As you remember, they saw two paths in front of them – the Witches Road and the other “Path Ahead”? - and there was also a tunnel on the opposite side – “The Path Behind”.

But remember, when Lilia and Jen saw Salem Seven, they were moving backwards! This suggests some kind of time anomaly going on with the tunnels.

So my theory is that Salem Seven have been trapped in the tunnels under Westview until the coven opened “the door” when they tried to summon a replacement green witch. The door opened and Salem Seven were able to go and search for Agatha. Because of the tunnel time anomaly, they chose a “path behind” tunnel, leading them to the surface of Westview and arrive on the day that Agatha was gathering her new coven.

Now, Rio physically appears on that day too and fights Agatha before telling her Salem Seven are coming. SOOOO. I think the first time Rio actually is with this coven is when Lilia sees her under the tunnels. This is the first time Lilia accepts her fate, accepts that she’s always been seeing death everywhere and thus, she is finally able to see Rio next to her. That’s why Rio is dressed in her full Death attire. But Lilia didn’t die in that moment. She carried on through the tunnels until her trial. So I think when Lilia sees Rio in the tunnels, she tells her she needs to warn Agatha about Salem Seven (and maybe about the black heart reference, which would also explain why Rio would use that specific line?). So Rio exits the tunnels the same way that Salem Seven do and finds Agatha (remember Salem Seven have been following Agatha all that day, in their animal forms). That’s why she is full of anger in that moment. For her, this is the first time she saw Agatha in ages so she feels she needs to take some time to “play” with Agatha. After that, she disappears, and probably goes back to the tunnels, so she can climb back up to the “road” and do her “surprise” emerge.

THE TRIAL

After Lilia’s trial, Billy, Agatha and Jen will carry on along the road. They will eventually reach “the end”, which is also the beginning – we see Agatha will trip over someone’s (Alice’s?) shoes, suggesting the Road is in fact coming to a full circle (or a figure of 8 – which is also etched on Billy’s sweater). But they have one more trial to go, so they will be confused.

However, remember the power of Billy’s wishes? Well, in ep.4 he said “I wish we could go home”. I think that wish worked. They did eventually go home – back to Agatha’s house, that’s why the ended up where they started. I wonder if this is then, when Rio catches up with them. They might even fight, because the sigil is no longer protecting Billy’s identity so Rio finally realises who he is and wants to take his body because he broke the rules. Somehow, this makes the 3 of them – Jen, Billy and Agatha end up in a morgue. We see them waking up in that room, emerging from body bags. Maybe this was how Rio intended to send them to the trial. I am fairly certain, that this room they are in, is actually Agatha’s basement. They literally are home. There is even the same pentagon shape on the floor.

It is the Earth trial so the theme will be around death and buried bodies, hence the morgue. The trial will be Billy’s because he has technically stolen a body. In this version Billy actually looks just like William Kaplan. As Agatha said Rio is “a tourist” and as such, she won’t get a trial, or at least not this one. We also hear in a promo Agatha reading “the answers lie where the truth is buried” – which eerily reminds her own quote from detective Agnes.

But this has double meaning – because the truth is buried inside both Billy and Agatha’s heads. So I wonder whose truth needs to be unearthed. Agatha will place her hands on Billy’s, so maybe she will finally “talk to the dead” as her spirit element, and try to bring out William Kaplan to the surface? But I also think that Agatha will also need to strip all of her layers and finally be honest with them. She will tell them about the truth behind the Witches Road and her con. I wonder if she will have to let Billy read her mind too? (and hence learns egregious amount about her) As that would be ultimate vulnerability – one that she’s always been so fierce of protecting (nod do the scene with Rio “You’re vulnerable” – “Only physically”). So she will need to give up her locket in order for the test to pass – her last connection to Nicky, and potentially protection from Death.

They will pass, but I have no clue how they will get out. I feel Jen and Billy could end up in the tunnels. Jen knows about them and she will literally be the Path Ahead, leading them out and exiting, but again, they will come out in the past – but before Salem Seven. I think their appearance will be what triggers Agnes O’Connor persona. Maybe they reunite with Alice in the tunnels, but Alice will stay behind to protect them?

AGATHA ALL ALONE

Agatha will be left behind. She will come out of the morgue, walking up the stairs – just like her own basement. And she will come out, standing in the Witches Road version of her own house, realising she is on her own again. Rio will be waiting, and Agatha will be furious that even after this painful sacrifice, she still doesn’t have her powers. That’s when she shouts “I want my prize”. Rio might be angry with her but she will also notice that Agatha no longer has the locket. They might have a confrontation and fight, but I wonder if there is going to be any one last sight of Salem Seven – after all, I think two of them survived – Cicada and Owl. And my theory is that Cicada made her way into Agatha’s trial in ep.5. She stood in the witches’ way and could’ve got inside the trial by getting a bug tangled in Agatha’s hair. That’s why the whole trial was off. It was Cicada’s trial to pass – she needed to punish Agatha and so she did. As a result it was Cicada and not Agatha who could get her wish – which is revenge on Agatha. That’s why Agatha couldn’t get out at the end of the trial. So maybe Cicada appear again, that’s why we see Agatha tied to a pole again. But Rio blasts Agatha with her magic so she absorbs it and restores her magic – but she will then die as a result – as foreshadowed in ep.1 – taking Death’s magic will kill Agatha. Not sure what happens with Rio, don’t think she could die? Or maybe she wanted this all along, because she’s tired of her job? She said she could make Agatha wish she was dead. Maybe with powers Agatha just absorbs Rio all together? Don’t know, too many possibilities – so I’m happy to leave that mystery for the finale.

AGNES O’CONNOR

Maybe Agnes the nosey neighbour sees Jen and Billy emerge. Or maybe they hide and just drop their clues – like they will bring Agatha’s locket for her to find. I think it could be combined powers of Jen and Billy that disrupt the spell. Or maybe the whole trial and battle take place in the actual house in Westview, so “nosey Agnes” will actually witness it? Who knows.

The reason I think Jen could be involved, because there is this ongoing theme of water in Agnes’s spell. She finds the locket in a pool of water – there is also a puddle outside her house. The “body” she investigates is constantly mentioned to be found “near water”, “in a ravine”, “in the creek”. Like it matters to Agatha. (or maybe it’s something else – maybe this is Agatha’s mind searching for Rio or something about the fact that the locket is made out of cowrie shell, i.e. sea snail (and then Lorna’s band is Coral Shore). There are also a lot of moments where things are seen through reflections in mirrors.

And because Billy read Agatha’s mind before, he will be able to influence her memories, so that she solves the case right this time. The lyrics of the song we hear in ep.2 also seem to align with this:

“There's a road in some old town I remember but haven't found.

I can hear the distant sounds Of that old river where I lay down.”

That’s why in the opening scene in ep.1 we hear Agatha already humming the ballad. She is driving through a windy road and into the woods – which look like a spitting image of the Witches Road. I think the body she is ultimately symbolising Agatha herself – she is a combination of what she remembers – her own past self, Wanda, the Darkhold, Billy, Rio and the Witches Road. She is investigating her own identity. To that end, I think that maybe Rio was never there. It was just Agatha’s mind imaging her as a spirit guide – Rio in the spell is able to really “SEE” Agnes the way she sees herself, she guides her thoughts and often she already knows what Agatha is thinking. Maybe by syphoning Rio’s powers, Agatha actually absorbed Rio inside of her? Rio is definitely not in the armchair when Agatha goes to check the noise upstairs.

Agatha is also trying to remember the Witches Road and figure out what went wrong so she can fix it and save herself and/or Billy or Rio? She even tells Billy during the interrogation scene “I was on a road this morning. It led to something pretty awful”. And that’s why this is a case that “only she can solve”. Maybe she takes those photos of seemingly random areas because that’s where she remembers the Witches Road events actually take place? Then the “kids” drawing on the fridge, showing a figure in black, could just be a quick scribble by Agatha, to remember Rio?

The inclusion of Darkhold in her investigation is interesting, because I don’t think this is just a nod to Wandavision events. After all, while Billy was still a kid in the Hex and searching for Wanda with his mind, he DID see the Darkhold in his mind, as Agatha held it in front of her during the battle. If he read the page he saw, it could explain his extra powers OR it could suggest that because he saw it, he is able to recreate it. Maybe Agatha is already well aware of it. There is a kid’s drawing in Nicky’s bedroom, showing a tree and a big sun. The wallpaper also has images of both sun and moon. I think this is a big hint to Agatha in terms of how to fix the events. Billy’s darkness is missing the Sun – as told by Lilia during his tarot reading. She said it could mean a reunion, but it could be the literal meaning of it. Bllly has became this dark goth character, a far cry from the innocent William Kaplan (who we saw in white – and I think he is represented by white stripes on Billy’s first top). It could even be a suggestion of the Darkhold influence? (His belt buckle reminds me of the symbol on the cover?)

There are soooo many lines in ep.1 that take a completely new meaning with the new context, might post it separately.

While I really like this time slipping, timey-wimey theory, it would still leave the question of how the ending of it would be executed (not enough time?) and what would happen with the parallel time characters if some people do come out to Westview back in time? So I’m leaning more towards it being all an elaborate illusion, created by the S.W.O.R.D. beekeeper from Wandavision XD But I hope at least some elements of my theory are right.

Thank you for reading this far!

A game of "Spot the difference"

EDIT: To be clear, I think they are an intentional plot device

Episode 5 is the most inconsistent one of the show - I think it's either a victim of too much editing and cutting down, OR it's intentional. See for yourself if you can find all the differences (answers at the end).

I have not edited these images in any way - they are direct shots from the episode.

Yes, it could be because the episode was busy and they ended up cutting it and doing lots of edits. But it's difficult to believe so many things would slip, especially in the show that has been so proud of their attention to detail. Also it wouldn't even make sense if they were just filmed on different days - because some of the differences overlap and some of them don't. As I said, I will soon write up my theory, but in the meantime, wanted to give you something to at least have fun with ;)

Have you got them all?

Rio:

  • Nails - generally very long nails, but in some shots her left middle finger nail is weirdly short.
  • Bracelets on her right wrist keep disappearing - sometimes they are there, sometimes they are not
  • Once, a white band appeared on her left wrist - in that same shot, Agatha's white wrist band is missing

Agatha:

  • Nails - in that episode she has long nails but there are occasional shots showing all them super-short
  • White band on her right wrist once disappeared and appeared on Rio's left

Jen:

  • the most consistent, the only minor difference is that sometimes her sleeve is rolled up, sometimes it isn't. But that really is a non-difference so I'm not counting it

Alice:

  • Nails: glitter nails that are generally shown as long, but in some close ups they are again very short
  • The bracelet on her left wrists has red charms. But occasionally a single green charm is shown.

Lilia:

  • Nails - sometimes long, sometimes short
  • Sometimes she holds her left hand differently, seemingly touching Alice - but this could be just the way they've filmed so I'm not really counting it

Billy:

  • The wristbands on his right wrist keep changing - I think the "baseline" is a couple black bands, an off-white white bracelet and a white&blue bracelet - but sometimes the black bands are missing, and the white bracelet get progressively more dark and blue.
  • when the lights start flickering, his bracelet looks almost like it's glowing, but it's just the light effect, so I'm not really counting it

Also, the skin colours sometimes change, but I don't know if's because of the light (e.g Alice's hand looks oddly dark in the close up)

Ep.1 detail on Rio's presence

My theory has been that Rio was not physically there in the Agnes O'Connor phase - it has always felt that she really was in Agatha's head, based on how she seemed to always be able to guess what Agatha was thinking, how she actually saw what "Agnes" was seeing, and of course the fact she couldn't stand behind the painting in that interogation scene.

So I might be biased, but but caught this little detail when re-watching ep.1 that could be confirming this. These are the consecutive shots we see - the moment Agatha heads upstairs, there isn't anyone sat in Rio's armchair. Now, granted, it could've just been that Aubrey's time was precious and she couldn't have stayed for those takes. But wouldn't they then chose a different angle? However, short, it seems significant to include it?

Made it a bit brighter, so you can definitely see it - the beer bottle is still there though:

AAA is retelling the story of Macbeth

Note: Yes, this is a very long post.

I believe Jac Schaeffer is telling us a version of Macbeth. The ballad lyrics use a quote from the play “Fair is foul and foul is fair”. There is also the painting in Agatha’s living room – “Macbeth and the three witches" by Francesco Zuccarelli. The painting clearly meant something to Agatha’s consciousness and it feels like it was meant to be seen, whether foreshadowing or reflecting emotional state (I wrote more about it here). Yet, Jac herself has not mentioned Macbeth in her interviews even once, which is interesting.

A huge question explored (but not answered) in Macbeth has always been about who is in control of our actions. Do we have free will or is already written for us by someone else? Can only one person be held responsible, and if so – is it the doer or the enabler who is to blame?

A quick play summary: Macbeth is a play written by William Shakespeare. It starts with Three witches telling the Scottish general Macbeth three prophecies: that he will be the Thane of Cawdor, that he will become a King of Scotland and that children of Banquo (his friend) will become kings. Shortly after, Macbeth really is appointed the Thane. Encouraged by his wife, Macbeth kills the king and becomes the new king. But he descends into paranoia, worried about the third prophecy, so he kills Banquo too. He seeks the witches out again, looking for reassurance. They show him 3 apparitions, which he interprets in his favour, giving him false sense of security. Civil war erupts to overthrow him and Macbeth is eventually killed.

When you compare the play with what we’ve seen in the show, the parallels become more and more obvious, and I think we can even identify who the characters are meant to be. My interpretation is:

  • Teen = William Shakespeare, the author
  • Agatha = Macbeth
  • Rio, Lady Death = Lady Macbeth (or Lady Macdeath?)
  • Banquo = Jen (but also Wanda)
  • The three witches = Alice, Evanora and Lilia (Maiden, Mother, Crone)

Detailed analysis:

Teen = William Shakespeare

The first obvious connection is the shared name and the fact that Vision actually said he wanted to name his son after William Shakespeare quoting “All the world’s a stage. All the men and women are merely players.”

This goes well with the implication that Billy has indeed “written” the Witches Road. I don’t think he is deliberately controlling it though – I believe his intentions are just so strong that the Road reflects everything we see in his room. He set the frame but he is not in charge. In fact, it feels more like the influence comes from William Kaplan rather than Billy Maximoff.

It is worth noting that the Macbeth play is set in a morally ambiguous society that judges others in black and white, while allowing shades of grey for themselves – very reminiscent of Billy’s attitude about witches in ep.5 when he said he is not like them at all – immediately followed by him lashing out. Lilia also reminds him in ep.7 of how much in common he has with this idea of a witch that he so vehemently rejects. I think in the end, when he realises that he is both Billy and William, he will also understand that he is not just a “writer”, but also a “player” of the story.

It is also interesting how there is no sun in the painting – similar to the perpetual night we see on the Road. The painting’s interpretations often suggest that the dark sky represents the theme of death lurking around (fitting that Jen calls Rio a “creepy lurker”). So I do believe that just as we have the symbolism of the Moon, there is also meaning to the Sun and the lack of it. This is why during Billy’s tarot reading, his card for “what’s missing?” is the Sun. At his bar mitzvah William Kaplan is in a white shirt. But when Billy returns home from the hospital, he’s wearing a stripy black and white top – but the white stripes are thin – only glimpses of William. Eventually Teen becomes this goth kid – suggesting that darkness has overtaken him. But in a promo we see him wearing a different top – again with black and white stripes but they are more equal and uniform. I think this symbolises that he realises he is both, Billy and William and it’s no longer murky to him. The Sun and the Moon are in balance. (And to that point – in ep.1 in Nicky’s bedroom we see wallpaper prominently showing both Sun and Moon elements. And the child’s drawing has the Sun at its centre)

Three Witches = Alice, Evanora and Lilia

This one is a more loose interpretation, but I think it ties well with the ongoing theme of “Maiden, Mother, Crone”. In Macbeth, it’s the witches that open the play, portraying them as those mysterious but powerful witches, controlling the events. But throughout the play, the audience realises they might not be as powerful – in fact, it is questioned whether they actually have the power to make things happen, or they merely have the ability to see the future. Eventually, they have less and less presence, and are not even there when the prophecies are fulfilled – suggesting that they were merely an illusion of control.

The fact remains that the witches are literal harbingers of doom – with their symbolism of number three (that is also heavily explored in this show, post here). They did share the prophecies, giving Macbeth the information he didn’t ask for. And later, when he comes for reassurance, they show him 3 more apparitions (well, 4, but he doesn’t take the last one in). The significance here was that the message here was so vague and deceptive that it could have one of two completely opposite meanings – and their interpretation proves crucial to the final outcome. The apparitions were telling Macbeth to be afraid, but instead he read what he wanted to see. He left feeling reassured, secure and justified in his actions. Again, the witches could be represented here as being deceptive, driving Macbeth’s demise. It feels like they had this insider knowledge that should’ve shared with Macbeth that would completely change the context of the message. But they didn’t and it’s a question if they ever even could.

Interestingly, in Act 3, Scene 5, the witches behave very differently to how they were before and it is believed that this is because this particular scene was not actually written by Shakespeare but by the actors themselves – if true, this would be an excellent parallel to episode 5 (and Agatha’s wearing a jersey with no.3). I believe Agatha’s trial was hijacked by Vertigo from Salem Seven. There were many inconsistencies with the previous trials, but I think the biggest tell was that the aspect ratio didn’t change – thus Vertigo taking over Billy’s story.

So, with all this in mind, I think that the show’s Three Witches are not active messengers to Macbeth/Agatha. It’s more about her interpretation of what they each represent in terms of her own destiny. I linked this with the Mother, Maiden, Crone - i.e. the Triple Goddess Hecate because in the play she us actually the “boss” of the Three Witches.

Let’s start with the obvious – the Mother element is Evanora, Agatha’s own mother who has always prophesised her that she will be evil. Then we have the Maiden. I think it makes sense that this is Alice. Not just because she is the youngest, but also because she serves as a fresh reminder to Agatha that she is actually evil, because she is the one who killed her. However, there is duality in here, because it is also an example that Alice protected Agatha BECAUSE Agatha was worthy of saving. That she didn’t actually think of her as evil, especially when recognising Alice’s own complicated history with her mother. Finally, we have the Crone – this Lilia, always complaining at how Agatha is the embodiment of the evil witch stereotype. And yet, in ep.7 Lilia gives Agatha an advice for her future – akin to a prophecy. Whether Agatha follows it or not, we don’t know yet, but it’s important to show that Lilia chose to help Agatha in the end, showing her she accepted her.

Banquo = Jen (also Wanda)

In Macbeth, the character of Banquo is Macbeth’s friend as is meant to serve as his foil – i.e. a person or thing that contrasts with and so emphasizes and enhances the qualities of another. Banquo has a lot of parallels with Macbeth and he is also present for the prophecies. Yet, he reacts differently to them as ultimately he is not interested in power.

So I think in the show, the foil is Jen – she is shown to be just as snarky and selfish as Agatha. She is also an exceptional witch that is at least a century old. But in the past she used her powers for the good before she became bound. She said she tried everything possible to unbind, but it seems she eventually accepted her fate, though she is still very much angry about it. Her business is false and people are harmed as a result, yet she knowingly continues that path.

This is parallel to Agatha, as we can predict that the myth of the witches road is her own fraud business, perpetuating it so she can steal power from the “undeserving” witches, not caring she causes harm. She probably could’ve ended up similarly to Jen or worse, had it not been for Billy pushing them both down the Witches Road.

It is interesting that they both seemingly passed their trials and yet neither of them recovered their powers. They both believe someone else is responsible for this (and to be fair, I think in Agatha’s case she is right – Vertigo stole her trial). There are many more similarities we can notice, but I wonder what this means for the future. I wonder if there will be confrontation between the two of them. I think Jen will be able to resolve her inner conflict and exit the Road, and she will become the literal High Priestess (i.e. head of her own coven) – similar to Banquo’s character, whose children became the kings, not Macbeth.

An honourable mention to another foil couple from the past – Wanda.

Both Agatha and Wanda were powerful witches, misunderstood by the society (“there will always be torches and pitchforks for ladies like us”). Both lost their children, but dealt with them differently. Both are told they were destined to be bad – Evanora calls Agatha evil and Wanda is prophesised as the Scarlet Witch who will destroy the world. It is interesting to debate who’s Macbeth and who’s Banquo in this pairing – while Agatha didn’t seem to be entirely under Darkhold influence, it was Wanda who eventually claimed Agatha’s power and the Darkhold, then become corrupted before her ultimate demise (and redemption).

Lady Macbeth = Lady Death

Lady Macbeth is the figure that often gets the full blame for Macbeth’s crimes – people even going as far as absolving Macbeth from any fault (which I think in itself is a demonstration of internalised misogyny but hey ho). She is also seen practicing witchcraft, which served as another suggestion that she was the baddie in control.

She has this line that could be a nod to Rio’s dagger - “that my keen knife see not the wound it makes”. Perhaps a reflection that Rio doesn’t want to see the pain that her actions as Death bring, that’s why she’s heavily dissociating with her powers, calling them “her job”.

When Macbeth is torn by the prophecies, he eventually decides that he will not kill the king. That very second, Lady Macbeth enters and very quickly manages to change his resolve. Later on, whenever he wavered, she was the one who would take over control. She was the ultimate enabler to his crimes, even getting the servants drunk, unlocking the King’s door, preparing the daggers etc.

She is seen as powerful but also completely loyal to Macbeth. She is devoted to the point that when she pleads with the spirits for his success, she offers them her own femininity (“unsex me”) in return, i.e. the one thing that makes her her. She doesn’t seek the power directly for herself  (though she would have it through his actions), immediately accepted Macbeth’s prophecy, understood that’s what he desired and supported him throughout. I think this probably reflects Agatha and Rio’s relationship really well. In ep.4 it is Rio who is impatient to “do some damage”.

However, despite his early signs of deep affection, as Macbeth descends into his downward spiral, he is less and less bothered by his wife. Eventually, he is the one to continue all the killings, and Lady Macbeth fades into a background. To the point where she eventually commits suicide from all the shame, yet Macbeth barely notices it. Perhaps that disconnection happened for Agatha and Rio too. Agatha was lost to Rio when she hid behind the dark magic and it was painful to her, after all these centuries.

Agatha = Macbeth

Finally, Agatha, just like in the show, represents the titular character. Even when committing murders, Hecate describes Macbeth as “a wayward son, spiteful and wrathful, who, as others do, loves for his own ends, not for you”, which I think really represents what the creators are showing us here. The setting of the play is in a world where your rights don’t matter – but instead it is the strongest that holds the power.

Macbeth’s demise doesn’t so much come from knowing the prophecies (because Banquo heard the same), but from his fatal flaw of ambition. He read the prophecies and apparitions how he wanted them to read. They were his imaginary permission to do the killings to reach the goal. After initial doubts, he convinced himself it was the right thing to do, he became “wicked” and drove to his self-destruction.

(side note: there is also this ambiguity in the play, where there is mention of Macebth’s child, yet people think him childless, suggesting there is a story of child loss behind it – link with Nicholas Scratch?)

As explained above, the Three Witches serve as Agatha’s ingrained belief about her role. She is surrounded by number three, showing her as the harbinger of doom. She might not think this is who she is, but it is still the role she chose to play, and eventually it became self-fulfilling. Her fatal flaw is her addiction to power and she believes in that “might, not right” world. So she has this wall around her and pursues that quest for power, because what else is there left? She is unapologetic about this, but we also start seeing the layers coming off.

I think the story in the show will ultimately come down to whether Agatha understands that she is the one standing in her own way and that she is not above the rules. That no matter the circumstances and the reputation and people enabling her, she is the one ultimately responsible for her own actions.

I think she will drive herself to self-destruction and will be willing to die to gain back her powers. I think she will be left on the Road so it is “Agatha all Alone”. However, there must be some growth from her Witches Road journey, so I think in her process, she will have some meaningful resolutions with others and actually help them escape the Road. And maybe this time she will even follow the rules.

I think this will make a mark on the others so that they will actually try to bring her back somehow. She might feel alone, but the power of the coven will be the one to save her.

EDIT: Just wanted to add, yes, there is also the character of Macduff. He is meant to be this incorruptible, noble character, serving as a complete opposite to Macbeth. He is always very clear on abiding by what's right and wrong, but after Macbeth kills his family, he swears revenge. To the point that he ultimately sacrifices his own morality to restore order to the country by killing Macbeth, thus committing regicide (an act he despised Macbeth for).

While it does sound like it could point to Billy, I just don't think it fits. While Billy certainly saw himself as this "good" character, we see in the later episodes that he does actually have some darkness in him - to the point where is very happy to be Maleficent. He is more similar to Agatha than he thinks. He doesn't mind breaking the rules when it suits him ("stealing" William's body, breaking into Agatha's house, drowning Jen and Lilia) and his internal struggle seems more around finding his own identity rather than revenging a family he hardly remembers (and it isn't really Agatha's fault that they were gone). And if he truly wanted revenge, all he had to do was leave Agatha in her Agnes spell forever.

I do wonder though, if maybe to some extent we are getting William Kaplan as Shakespeare and Billy Maximoff as Macduff?

In the show there is also this ongoing theme where each of the witches are self-sabotaging and are actually their own enemies when it comes to getting "what's missing".

But if I had to choose anyone for Macduff, I think it would be Vertigo - revenging both the Salem mothers and her Salem Seven coven and seeing Agatha as the threat to the witches world, especially because she experienced it first hand. I have a theory that Salem Seven were originally Agatha's own coven that she formed after she killed their mothers, but through her cowardice, she betrayed them and left them on their own Witches Road. After that, Agatha kept conning other "undeserving" witches pretending she'd take them to the Road, while the Salem Seven became trapped and have gone "feral", thus losing their morality.

I have a theory, The road is created by all the witches that are in the coven when they sing the ballad that’s why it changes for the coven. So if Agatha did do the road before she wouldn’t know what to expect this time because she with different witches. I also imagine the the first time she was on it she and Rio just instantly killed the other or something along the lines.

Avatar

Oh shoot, I've missed this in my inbox, sorry! Yes, I absolutely agree with that. I am more and more inclined to believe that Agatha has been to the Road but it appeared differently to her. While I don't think Billy is controlling the Road, at least not consciously - I think his intentions have a more significant impact on the Road than for other witches, because he is The Magician.

I wrote a bit more about this and my theory on Agatha's previous Road journey in here:

Salem Seven will be back, and with some answers

Despite what Jac suggested about Salem Seven being dead, I strongly believe they are important and we will see them again. Their story will not only make a lot of sense, but also tie up quite a few threads - especially the question whether or not Agatha walked the road before.

As explained in episode 5, when Agatha murdered her mother’s coven, she spared their young children. They then became “a feral, hive-minded coven bend on revenge”. Yes, we could easily assume their revenge was for killing their mothers, but I think there is more to it – especially the part on how they became so feral.

We see that there is this maternal/mentor side to Agatha, all the way back to her babysitting the twins in Wandavision. Of course, the kids might have had fathers, but even Kathryn said in her recent interview that the show really doesn’t mention men because witches have been so independent. The theme that a witch needs her coven is strong in the show, so I think it would make sense if Agatha, despite being hurt by her mother and the original witches, still sought to be the head of her own coven.

So whether she took care of the children after the events, or grew up alongside them (she was one of the coven’s kids too, after all), she probably held a prominent role in their lives and used this as an opportunity to manipulate the children so that they became her own coven once they grew up. They probably didn’t even know Agatha was the one who killed their mothers.

Eventually, something made them want to walk the Witches Road. I wonder if it was the death of Nicholas Scratch or maybe something else. But it was enough for them to summon it. I think Rio was in the coven by that time too (my theory she was called to Agatha during her attempted execution, when the witches chanted at her in Latin “Death to unnatural monster”) – which may be why summoning the Witches Road worked. However, it didn’t look like anything like the road we are seeing in the show, because “The road changes for the coven”, reflecting the intentions of the witches that walk it. I would argue there even was a daylight (“our” road is perpetual night because that’s how Billy imagined it, he’s fascinated by the meaning of the moon phases, as seen in his room, spell book and outfit – I think this is also why his tarot card for “what’s missing?” was none other than “The Sun”. I don’t think Billy is knowingly controlling the Road – but we know his intentions are really powerful)

Unfortunately, the Road does not work out for the Salem coven – I think as they go into the first trial, they actually fail it – I would venture a guess it was because Agatha was trying to cut corners as usual. But because Rio was there and she is essentially “a tourist”, she got both her and Agatha out, abandoning the rest of the coven. So the Salem Seven didn’t die but became trapped on the Witches Road because the coven was now incomplete (remember “together or not at all”). That’s what eventually made them so feral and angry at Agatha for all of this.

I think this is exactly why Lilia so pointedly told them in ep.7 “You may not know this about the road, but when you succesfully complete a trial - like I just did - it’s not a good idea to overstay your welcome. Usually, something terrible happens.” I think her message had multiple meanings all at once:

  1. she was telling them they are going to regret pursuing her in her own trial, and
  2. she knew they failed their own trials before, and
  3. a message specifically to Vertigo (cicada) – more on this later.

So then the missing witches become known as this “Salem Seven”, while Agatha perpetuates her half-truth that she survived the Witches Road. And if her intentions for the road really were to bring Nicholas back, that would also explain why she lets people believe that she simply traded her own child for Darkhold. With that lie she can pretend that she had some level of control over the events. But in reality, she failed to save her son because of her own flaws/cowardice and abandoned her own coven in the process.

This brings me back to “our” Witches Road. The Spirit trial has always been a point of contention, particularly because a lot of the trial elements felt inconsistent to the previous one (even to the point where the aspect ratio didn’t change) and the objective of the trial just made no sense. But the road leading to the trial was purple and the blood moon did mean it was a spirit trial (talking to the dead). So in that sense, I think it was Agatha’s trial.

HOWEVER, right before the witches land their broomsticks, Vertigo stands in their way and releases her cicadas onto them. Later on, we see Agatha pulling things out of her hair and I think there must have been cicadas entangled in there. So I believe Vertigo made her way inside. And because technically she was part of Agatha’s coven (just not this coven), the trial was actually hers to pass – that is why the task is to “punish Agatha”. It’s still Agatha’s trial but in that sense where the word “trial” is less about “testing”, but more about “being judged in court”.

Edit as I don't think I made it clear: I believe if Vertigo didn't hijack it, the trial would've been about Agatha communicating with Nicholas and getting her closure that way. Notice how he does appear but only once Alice blasts Evanora

This is also why Agatha doesn’t get her powers at the end of it, even though they passed (and we know they passed because the exit appears and the road colour changes). It was Vertigo who is going to get her wish out of this one – most likely to keep with the theme if imprisoning Agatha on the Road (remember Evanora said “you must finish the witches road without Agatha” – a fitting punishment to someone who did the same to their own coven first).

EDIT: It occurred to me this could have also been a message from Evanora directly to Vertigo - just telling her to finish the road and leave Agatha with her.

That is why I think Lilia meant her message for Vertigo too. I think she probably knows that Vertigo survives (only 5 bodies are impaled at the end, so I think the Owl and Vertigo as cicada escape – this is also shown on the tarot card) and she warns her not to “overstay her welcome” on the Road and leave. I think in the future Vertigo will finally confront Agatha, calling her a coward for leaving them, before trying to imprison her (referenced by Lilia in “when she calls you a coward, hit the deck!”).

What do you think?

Agatha & Death connection

I think it was mummy Evanora and her coven who unknowingly bound Agatha and Death together...

At Agatha's trial back in Salem, the witches chant: "Mors Monstrum Innaturale" which roughly translates to "Death to the unnatural monster".

Ignoring the sad fact that they called Agatha a monster, it reads like they actually accidentally summoned Lady Death to come to Agatha and their plan backfired...

The End.

Jac Schaeffer's narrative on death

There have been a few interview with Jac post-ep 7 where she's really zeroing in on the seriousness of death in the conclusion of the show.

"What I want to say is that this is a show about death. We actually have the character of Death in our show. I am interested in that conversation, and I am fascinated by how death is used in the comic space and in the MCU. Personally, I feel that when a person dies, you can still talk to them and feel them, and they can still be in your lives. But death is immutable. It is permanent. With this show, we wanted to pay respect to that. So this a more earnest and grave conversation about death than maybe you would find in another superhero project."

Of course that worries me... BUT. Let's not forget this is the same woman who told us this in her episode 1 breakdown:

"I think in addition to sending up the tropes in other corners of pop culture, I also do enjoy sending up the tropes of Marvel, which is, like, “Is anyone really ever dead?” "
