Butterflies or Birds? (A Bruno x Elena Drabble)
“What are you thinking about?”
Bruno and Elena were lying in the grass outside of Casita when Bruno asked the question.
Elena was deep in thought, her arms crossed behind her head as she stared up at the clouds drifting by.
“Mmm...our conversation last weekend,” she replied.
“About butterflies. How you felt what happened to Casita and the mountains was like what happens to caterpillars when they become butterflies.”
Bruno smiled. It felt nice to have something profound he said be dwelled upon and not a bad vision to angst over for a change.
“What about it are you thinking about?” he asked.
“Trying to think about how I fit into it all.”
“Oh that’s easy - you married me.”
Elena snickered and her head rolled in the grass to look at him. “No, I mean...well, your family’s motif is butterflies. For me, the closest I can think of is a songbird.” She stared back up at the sky. “I don’t know...just thinking how I flew away from the city like a little bird.”
Bruno stared up at the clouds, watching a flock of birds fly by far overhead.
“Birds go where they like. You’re free to do whatever you want.”
“Birds fly where they’ll feel safe and secure,” she also noted. “I don’t know...just thinking how the same place can mean different kinds of change, transformation, and beauty to different people.”
Bruno looked back at her again, his eyes staring down to the small baby bump on her stomach.
“When we have kids, do you think they’ll be more like butterflies or songbirds?” he asked.
Elena smiled, thinking about it as two passing clouds made way for the sun to shine down.
“I don’t know...I guess it depends on whatever the encanto will mean to them.”
