“Aegon finally decided to take over Westeros and unify the Seven Kingdoms that existed at the time, under a single rule. There is a lot of speculation that in some sense he saw what was coming 300 years later and wanted to unify the Seven Kingdoms to be better prepared for the threat that he eventually saw coming from the north – the threat that we’re dealing with in A Song of Ice and Fire.”

– George R. R. Martin

In case anyone missed it, GRRM is pro-Conquest and pro-unified Westeros. The Targaryens taking over the rule of the Seven Kingdoms is treated as a positive necessity. The intent was to protect the continent from the main villains of the series, the ice zombies called the Others. They are not villains and their loss of the Iron Throne is a threat to the unity Aegon I tried to create. Dany retaking Westeros is what she believes is what will help the county and what she has been told the people of Westeros want. If she learns that her ancestor unified the continent to protect it from zombies, that will make her cause even more righteous.

I also saw a lot of criticism about how Aegon did a bad job if his reasoning was to save Westeros from the threat. Which makes no sense. He wanted to unify Westeros to be prepared for the threat - and he did that! In his lifetime, there was no threat - so what else was he supposed to be doing?

And the Starks, - whose house motto is Winter is coming -  who build the bloody wall in the first place, even they seem to have done nothing about this threat, allowing the Night’s Watch to fall into disrepair manned by outlaws, rapists and murderers.

And apparently it’s wrong that the Targaryens did not tell about this to Starks. One, we really don’t know if there was some communication between the Starks and Targs on this. And two, it’s not like the Starks prepared for this threat either, despite their history with the Others.

Alysanne did more for the Wall than the Starks did. And while Ned considered proposals to increase the revenue for the Wall, he did nothing about it.

And then there are the criticisms of how there is no justification for Aegon waging violent war for unification even if it was to save Westeros. When this is precisely what Stannis and Jon Snow are doing right now!!! Stannis’ campaign in the North - fully supported and aided by Jon Snow - is to unite Westeros under one king - him. Because Jon and Stannis know of the threat from the North and know that the realm has to be united under one ruler instead of fighting each other.

And considering that Stannis is not going to be sticking around for long, which ruler wanting to unite the realm is Jon going to be turning to? That’s right, Daenerys Targaryen.

ASOIAF fandom: uwu such tragedy with these Baratheon brothers uwu sad sad Robert who didn't get his pixie girl, "girl coded" Stannis the Mannis, gay icon Renly uwu

Team Black looking down at a domestic abuser and canon Predator Robert, a hypocritical misogynistic Stannis blabbing about rapist Aegon II's "rights", and some guy who tried to whore out a 14 yo to a known domestic abuser and predator for gain Renly, suddenly all placing their male "rights" on a female relative low on the inheritance line after their ancestor went "I just hate women" when a woman was actually heir, pulling some strings from the other side:

I am king. Wants do not enter into it. I have a duty to my daughter. To the realm. Even to Robert. He loved me but little, I know, yet he was my brother. The Lannister woman gave him horns and made a motley fool of him. She may have murdered him as well, as she murdered Jon Arryn and Ned Stark. For such crimes there must be justice. Starting with Cersei and her abominations. But only starting. I mean to scour that court clean. As Robert should have done after the Trident.”

A Song of Ice & Fire - A Storm of Swords - Davos V      “How many boys dwell in Westeros? How many girls? How many men, how many women? The darkness will devour them all, she says. The night that never ends. She talks of prophecies…a hero reborn in the sea, living dragons hatched from dead stone…she speaks of signs and swears they point to me. I never asked for this, no more than I asked to be king. Yet dare I disregard her?” He ground his teeth. “We do not choose our destinies. Yet we must…we must do our duty, no? Great or small, we must do our duty.”

Chapters of A Song of Ice & Fire - A Storm of Swords - Davos VI      “There’s much I don’t understand,” Davos admitted. “I have never pretended elsewise. I know the seas and rivers, the shapes of the coasts, where the rocks and shoals lie. I know hidden coves where a boat can land unseen. And I know that a king protects his people, or he is no king at all.”

Chapters of A Song of Ice & Fire - A Storm of Swords - Samwell V      “There’s another man,” Sam blurted out. “Lord Commander Mormont trusted him. So did Donal Noye and Qhorin Halfhand. Though he’s not as highly born as you, he comes from old blood. He was castle-born and castle-raised, and he learned sword and lance from a knight and letters from a maester of the Citadel. His father was a lord, and his brother a king.”

Chapters of A Song of Ice & Fire - A Dance With Dragons - Jon IV "Which would you have as Lord of Winterfell, Snow? The smiler or the slayer?" Jon said, "Winterfell belongs to my sister Sansa." "I have heard all I need to hear of Lady Lannister and her claim." The king set the cup aside. "You could bring the north to me. Your father's bannermen would rally to the son of Eddard Stark. Even Lord Too-Fat-to-Sit-a-Horse. White Harbor would give me a ready source of supply and a secure base to which I could retreat at need. It is not too late to amend your folly, Snow. Take a knee and swear that bastard sword to me, and rise as Jon Stark, Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North." How many times will he make me say it? "My sword is sworn to the Night's Watch." Stannis looked disgusted. "Your father was a stubborn man as well. Honor, he called it. Well, honor has its costs, as Lord Eddard learned to his sorrow."

i swear to god every time smth like this shows up in davos chapters i can't help my morbid laughter. idk how more obvious grrm could make it for readers that stannis is fake from beginning to the end.

i mean red comet “heralding their coming”? lightbringer? *cough*drogon*cough* PAID THE PRICE? damn, guys, dany already did all of this in agot and by herself, without anyone pushing her to hatch dragons and handing all the solutions and receipts to her. the chosen one of r'hllor who again?

but what is more hilarious abt these quotes is not just pointing at stannis being so obviously a red herring of azor ahai reborn that it's painfully embarrassing already again (bc c'mon his very first introduction scene was a mockery of a real creation of lightbringer) but ALSO a failed parallel to aegon the conqueror. in any other story it would be a man to be the one, to be THEE hero, but in asoiaf? nope. stannis or whoever else might have aegon's castle, might stand where he stood by the painted table and plan to achieve what he achieved aka the conquest of westeros, but it doesn't make him the next aegon the conqueror. in fact, we actually have the real aegon the conqueror come again who does share real parallels w him that were put there by the author on purpose. our beloved aegon the conqueror w teats <33

Aside from the fact that Dany already did all of these things that Melisandre and Selyse want Stannis to do, there's another contrast between Dany and Stannis here that I think is very interesting. Stannis already starts his campaign in more privileged position, as he is mentioned to have more men that Aegon had:

"Lord husband," said Queen Selyse, "you have more men than Aegon did three hundred years ago. All you lack are dragons." - Davos V ASOS

Aegon is said to have between a few hundreds or thousands swords when he started his conquest:

Accounts differ on how many swords set sail from Dragonstone with Aegon and his sisters. Some say three thousand; others number them only in the hundreds. This modest Targaryen host put ashore at the mouth of the Blackwater Rush, on the northern bank where three wooded hills rose above a small fishing village. - TWOIAF

Meanwhile, our Dany starts with less followers than Aegon (and most of them aren't even warriors):

Dany called the Dothraki around her. Fewer than a hundred were left. How many had Aegon started with? she wondered. It did not matter. - Daenerys X AGOT

Dany starts with no dragons, and less men than Aegon had. And yet, she is the one who enters into the pyre and figures out how to get dragons without guidance. Meanwhile, Stannis starts with more resources than both Dany and Aegon, but he isn't really able to go very far, and needs Melisandre's magical help in several moments. And when Dany goes to Westeros, I'm pretty sure she will be able to do more than Stannis.

And there's also another moment where Dany is compared to Aegon in a favorable way, showing how she conquered more than Aegon with less resources (while Stannis has more resources and couldn't do the same):

No one was calling her Daenerys the Conqueror yet, but perhaps they would. Aegon the Conqueror had won Westeros with three dragons, but she had taken Meereen with sewer rats and a wooden cock, in less than a day. - Daenerys VI ASOS

Chapters of A Song of Ice & Fire - A Dance With Dragons - Jon I      “This is my place as it is yours, and soon enough you may have grave need of me. Do not refuse my friendship, Jon. I have seen you in the storm, hard-pressed, with enemies on every side. You have so many enemies. Shall I tell you their names?”      “I know their names.”      “Do not be so certain.” The ruby at Melisandre’s throat gleamed red. “It is not the foes who curse you to your face that you must fear, but those who smile when you are looking and sharpen their knives when you turn your back. You would do well to keep your wolf close beside you. Ice, I see, and daggers in the dark. Blood frozen red and hard, and naked steel. It was very cold.”      “It is always cold on the Wall.”      “You think so?”      “I know so, my lady.”      “Then you know nothing, Jon Snow,” she whispered.

THEON MONTH 2022 || Day 15: Theon’s Captors

Ned Stark
Lord Eddard had tried to play the father from time to time, but to Theon he had always remained the man who’d brought blood and fire to Pyke and taken him from his home. As a boy, he had lived in fear of Stark’s stern face and great dark sword.
~A Clash of Kings
Ramsay Bolton
He will flay me inch by inch. When my fingers are gone he will take my hands. After my toes, my feet. But only when I beg for it, when the pain grows so bad that I plead for him to give me some relief. There would be no hot baths for Reek. He would roll in shit again, forbidden to wash. The clothes he wore would turn to rags, foul and stinking, and he would be made to wear them till they rotted. The best he could hope for was to be returned to the kennels with Ramsay’s girls for company.

Stannis Baratheon
Theon Greyjoy opened his eyes. His shoulders were on fire and he could not move his hands. For half a heartbeat he feared he was back in his old cell under the Dreadfort, that the jumble of memories inside his head was no more than the residue of some fever dream. I was asleep, he realized. That, or passed out from the pain. When he tried to move, he swung from side to side, his back scraping against stone. He was hanging from a wall inside a tower, his wrists chained to a pair of rusted iron rings… Theon Greyjoy chortled. A stab of pain went up his arms, from his shoulders to his wrists. All he had done, all he had suffered, Moat Cailin and Barrowton and Winterfell, Abel and his washerwomen, Crowfood and his Umbers, the trek through the snows, all of it had only served to exchange one tormentor for another.
