Jon Snow Month – Day 10 – Friendships

To me the first real friend Jon Snow makes in the story (outside of his family members) is Tyrion. They both meet right at the beginning of Jon’s story, when he decides to join the Night’s Watch, and Jon doesn’t think much of Tyrion at first but Tyrion’s wit I believe is what makes Jon change his opinion on him.

Jon Snow Month: Favourite quotes

I decided instead of writing down my favourite Jon Snow quotes to write instead my favourite quotes others said to him or about him.

Bran saw his father’s face change, saw the other men exchange glances. He loved Jon with all his heart at that moment. Even at seven, Bran understood what his brother had done. The count had come right only because Jon had omitted himself. He had included the girls, included even Rickon, the baby, but not the bastard who bore the surname Snow - Bran Stark

The first chapter of the series introduces Jon Snow through the eyes of his younger brother, Bran. His brother watches him selflessly removing himself from claiming a direwolf so all his siblings will have one. This  scene sets up two promiment Jon Snow traits: his unquestionable love for his family and his inferiority complex due to his bastard status.

~~~
Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.” - Tyrion Lannister.
 Tyrion gave one great advice to Jon which came from personal experiance as  society’s outcast. It’s known that Tyrion has a liking for “bastards, cripples and broken things” so it’s no wonder he took a liking on Jon,too and even offered him some words of wisdom. Over the years Jon went from being offered to be called bastard to use it to his advantage (ex: when he convinced Mance he was a turncloak because his bastard status never allowed to have what he wanted) so I can say that Tyrion’s advice was very helpful for Jon.
~~~~

You will find little joy in your command, but with luck, you’ll find the strength to do what needs to be done. Kill the boy, Jon Snow. Winter is almost upon us. Kill the boy, and let the man be born.” - Maester Aemon

Jon takes Maester Aemon’s advice to heart and “kill the boy” is a repeating mantra in his chapters in ADWD.

And because Master Aemon is that awesome and also his advices have a great impact on Jon I decided to include a second quote from him:

 “The craven can be as brave as any man, when there is nothing to fear. And we all do our duty, when there is no cost to it. How easy it seems then, to walk the path of honor. Yet soon or late in every man’s life comes a day when it is not easy, a day when he must choose.“ - Maester Aemon

I know that Maester Aemon told this specific quote when Jon was thinking to abandon the Night’s Watch in order to aid his family at war in AGOT but it also applies in so many situations of Jon’s life. Because this boy is always facing impossible choices.

~~~
Mine, as I’m yours. And if we die, we die. All men must die, Jon Snow. But first we’ll live.“ - Ygritte
Jon, who is always thinking the consequences of his choices and even feels guilty for things he can’t control, needed to be told to live the moment. And when he fell in love with Ygritte for a while lived for the present. In was only for a little while but it was a nice break from his gloomy dutiful life.
~~~

[…]Needle was Jon Snow’s smile. He used to mess my hair and call me “little sister,” she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes. - Arya Stark

When Arya thinks what her sword, Needle, symbolizes to her she recalls her home and people she loved. Her thoughts end with the most imporant person in her life, Jon , and his rememberance brings tears to her.

It’s beautiful to read how Arya despite being separated from him for hundreds of miles and for many years still thinks the world of him and also draws strength from his memory. Their shared bond is so beautiful.

Lannisters scheme to use Sansa’s claim to take Winterfell. Robb sees this and creates the infamous Will to disinherit Sansa in order to keep Winterfell out of Lannister reach and as King of the North it’s his duty to protect his people from those who intend to harm them, a.k.a the Lannisters. Unfortunately, Sansa is caught in this crossfire and has to lose her claim to WF in order to keep it protected.

But, I could also see Robb’s Will hindering LF plans for Sansa. We know that Jeyne is posing as Arya and should that be exposed, the Bolton’s hold on WF would be destabilized. Leading to LF possibly bringing Sansa out of hiding as Alayne and rallying people behind her to claim WF. And then, Robb’s Will comes out, stating she infact no longer holds any titles or claim to WF as she was disinherited by her older brother and KITN or said reasons of being the wife of a Lannister and infact Jon was made Robb’s heir. LF plans of taking WF using Sansa are derailed in a very unexpected way, which is more ideal because LF seems to have no knowledge of this and it would completely screw with him (then again it’s just my theory of thought, people could have better ideas of what Robb’s Will could do)

It’s just interesting that because it puts Sansa in a negative spot the fandom ignores it, despite it being made to protected Winterfell. And if someone like Stannis calls Sansa ‘Lady Lannister’ I wouldn’t be surprised if Northerners remember her marriage and are hesitant about her claim as well.

I support all this.

It's clear no word of Robb's Will went past Northern Houses. No big player appears to know. Which is why it is such an exciting Chekhov's Gun.

So many people are making plans without knowing of it. Stannis offering Winterfell to Jon, but on his terms, as if it's HIS benevolent gift. Boltons parading a marriage to a fake Arya. LF trying to use Sansa. Even Manderly with Rickon.

It's a mess. It's hilsrious.

I can't wait. (...if it ever gets written).

I cannot wait for Arya to go back to Westeros with all those skills and knowledge, looking fierce and just surprise people with how much she changed and learned.

She just randomly start speaking braavosi without any accent (or High valyrian with Dany if that meeting ever happen) or warg another cat or even just show off her incredibly good spying skills and the person she is with (probably someone who knew her before) has theirs jaw on the floor because of the surprise.

I know it's not gonna happen like that but I would like to see it, that would be fun.

so benjen joined the night’s watch when he was 14-15? and grrm refuses to say what the reason behind his decision was..? how to say benjen knew about lyanna running away with rhaegar and keeping it a secret and then feeling so guilty she died he joined the night’s watch to “atone” without explicitly saying this. poor benjen felt so crashed he literally gave up on his own life because lyanna died :’(

The fact that young Edric Dayne was referred to as Ned by his familly, already makes me suspicious that there's more to the relationship between Eddard Stark and House Dayne, than is currently revealed. But apart from that it seems that Edric is a Stark and northern name by its origins, there were at least two Edric Starks, one of them was antient and super legendary.

[Cat, to Robb:]”You were fighting with wooden swords less than a year past.” -Catelyn VIII, aGoT

y’know, it’s only in the context of lines like this i just recently realized the full significance of arya getting needle from jon. presumably jon didn’t have a real sword himself before leaving for castle black, as robb only started carrying one when he became acting lord of winterfell at the ripe age of 14 going on 15. jon tells her it’s not a toy, yes, but what does that make the swords he and robb used only just recently? it was while watching bran spar at tommen with wooden swords that arya expressed her wish to do the same, but jon gave her way better than that with needle. not knowing when he’d get a chance to see her again and knowing this would probably be his last chance to have a blacksmith do him such a favor, he has a steel sword with a true point made for her. it’s a real lethal weapon different from the usual westerosi swords in that it’s been custom made for her small size, but that just makes it a shorter version of the usual swords in braavos. jon knows arya wants a chance for swordplay like her brothers so he gives an actual lethal sword, even though she’s years younger than the age her brothers would need to reach to carry one and even though jon already spent all those years stuck with a wooden sword until right when our story begins. if arya wants a sword and jon’s getting his own steel sword, he’ll give her one too. never mind that he’s five years older and has been trained to fight all his life. jon doesn’t know who she could practice with once away from her brothers, and he couldn’t possibly know she was going to get a real braavosi sword master to teach her, he just knew he wanted her to have this lethal weapon on hand.

ned got her syrio, yes, but you know he still hoped it was just a phase because he still wanted her to become a proper lady dependent on husband and sons. jon recognized the unfairness she felt in rigid gender roles and tried to make up for it with a lethal weapon so she’d have the means to defend herself if the need arose. i just think that’s neat.

ASOIAF AU - Daenerys is a firebender

I did consider in the very early stages not having the dragons in there. I wanted the Targaryen’s symbol to be the dragons, but I did play with the notion that maybe it was like a psionic power, that it was pyrokinesis — that they could conjure up flames with their minds. I went back and forth. — GRRM (x)

Speaking of Rhaegar & Lyanna sparring I know damn well Lyanna would taunt Rhaegar a little. Them leaning a little too close when their swords kiss (LOL) and her taking a jab at his alleged rusty sword skills. The image of Lyanna pointing the tip of her sword at his throat, smirking that I can dare smile (shout out to my girl Daena) and Rhaegar looking at her like he is so in love BYE

OMG YES, I accept it as canon! Rhaelya sparring energy just hits differently 😍 I will never let go of the headcanon that the first time they met when she was hiding she actually tried to threaten him which made Rhaegar feel ✨things✨ I know these aren’t the best pics, but the whole sparring scene from the “Girl king” reminds me of your headcanon ❤️

more on arya stark + “goddesses in every woman” by jean shinoda bolen:

It helps to realize that death and rebirth, in myth and dreams, are metaphors for loss, depression, and recovery. In retrospect, many such dark periods turn out to be rites of passage, a time of suffering through which a woman has learned something of value, and has grown.

this is the way arya’s arc should be viewed but never is. people get caught up in the assassin aspect and the show is downright gimmicky (empty) about it but the whole storyline is literally a struggle to overcome depression and trauma. when experiencing loss it can feel like losing yourself or as if you’re gone. as if you’re no one without those you cared for. thats what arya is going through. thats what the “no one” and faces thing in the hob&w truly represents. she is at risk of losing herself to grief. when she lost her family and home she feels as if she died too. she’s in so much pain. but arya will be reborn. she can recover and heal and grow.

Similarly, the heroine’s journey is an individuation quest. Traveling this path, the heroine may find, lose, and rediscover what has meaning to her, until she holds on to these values in all kinds of circumstances that test her. She may repeatedly encounter whatever threatens to overcome her, until finally the danger of losing her selfhood is over.

what has meaning to arya is her pack. she was set on that path early in her story when ned told her “the lone wolf dies but the pack survives” but then she lost her pack as she was thrown out into the world without them. then she found it again in gendry and hot pie. only to lose it again when they left. and lose it again and again when her entire family was (seemingly) killed. which “threatens to overcome her” and endangers arya’s “selfhood” but eventually she will find her pack and herself and nothing will be able to take either from her.

Note that after proving her courage and competency, the heroine does not go riding off into the sunset by herself, like the archetypal cowboy hero. Nor is she cast in the mold of the conquering hero. Union, reunion, and home are where her journey ends.

i almost screamed when i read this lol. if everyone would look back at what ive been preaching! arya’s journey will not end with her alone and cast off. she has struggled too hard against that. in the end she will find the identity, family, and home that she’s been looking for.
