Saying Cat should just "get over herself, love Jon and be a mother to him" is denying her the only thing that was hers in the situation and that was in her control (as much as feelings are in your own control).

She didn't create the situation, she wasn't giving a say on whether Jon lives in her home or not, she didn't even get to ask questions about him/his mother etc.

The only thing that was her own, were her feelings, her thoughts and actions. And saying she needs to complete adjust them, to better a situation she was not responsible for and for the comfort of men (especially Ned), when she had no control over anything else, feels wrong. It's also putting the responsibility of fixing the situation on Cat instead of Ned.

As someone who has a stepmother AND a stepdad, I can assure you that you dont need to treat children like garbage. You can always make them feel welcome, or try the best to be nice, and this do not mean you are fathering or mothering anyone. This is just some basic human decency. In my experiece, neither of them(stepmom and stepdad) are not even close of my actual parents and neither of them try to be.
