i swear to god every time smth like this shows up in davos chapters i can't help my morbid laughter. idk how more obvious grrm could make it for readers that stannis is fake from beginning to the end.
i mean red comet “heralding their coming”? lightbringer? *cough*drogon*cough* PAID THE PRICE? damn, guys, dany already did all of this in agot and by herself, without anyone pushing her to hatch dragons and handing all the solutions and receipts to her. the chosen one of r'hllor who again?
but what is more hilarious abt these quotes is not just pointing at stannis being so obviously a red herring of azor ahai reborn that it's painfully embarrassing already again (bc c'mon his very first introduction scene was a mockery of a real creation of lightbringer) but ALSO a failed parallel to aegon the conqueror. in any other story it would be a man to be the one, to be THEE hero, but in asoiaf? nope. stannis or whoever else might have aegon's castle, might stand where he stood by the painted table and plan to achieve what he achieved aka the conquest of westeros, but it doesn't make him the next aegon the conqueror. in fact, we actually have the real aegon the conqueror come again who does share real parallels w him that were put there by the author on purpose. our beloved aegon the conqueror w teats <33
Aside from the fact that Dany already did all of these things that Melisandre and Selyse want Stannis to do, there's another contrast between Dany and Stannis here that I think is very interesting. Stannis already starts his campaign in more privileged position, as he is mentioned to have more men that Aegon had:
"Lord husband," said Queen Selyse, "you have more men than Aegon did three hundred years ago. All you lack are dragons." - Davos V ASOS
Aegon is said to have between a few hundreds or thousands swords when he started his conquest:
Accounts differ on how many swords set sail from Dragonstone with Aegon and his sisters. Some say three thousand; others number them only in the hundreds. This modest Targaryen host put ashore at the mouth of the Blackwater Rush, on the northern bank where three wooded hills rose above a small fishing village. - TWOIAF
Meanwhile, our Dany starts with less followers than Aegon (and most of them aren't even warriors):
Dany called the Dothraki around her. Fewer than a hundred were left. How many had Aegon started with? she wondered. It did not matter. - Daenerys X AGOT
Dany starts with no dragons, and less men than Aegon had. And yet, she is the one who enters into the pyre and figures out how to get dragons without guidance. Meanwhile, Stannis starts with more resources than both Dany and Aegon, but he isn't really able to go very far, and needs Melisandre's magical help in several moments. And when Dany goes to Westeros, I'm pretty sure she will be able to do more than Stannis.
And there's also another moment where Dany is compared to Aegon in a favorable way, showing how she conquered more than Aegon with less resources (while Stannis has more resources and couldn't do the same):
No one was calling her Daenerys the Conqueror yet, but perhaps they would. Aegon the Conqueror had won Westeros with three dragons, but she had taken Meereen with sewer rats and a wooden cock, in less than a day. - Daenerys VI ASOS
