Forget it, Kate. It’s a metaphor.

A soft introduction

Oi, this feels self-important but since my return to Tumblr has started to look more permanent and less like a flirtation, I decided a pinned post might do some good. My name is Crystal. While I don’t feel comfortable listing all my different identity markers in a row for strangers, I am a Black lesbian in my mid thirties so please do not talk to me like that does not have a material effect on my perspective. I run into this issue a lot in fan spaces, so this will serve as your one and only warning. Currently, I am a 9-1-1 account, with a primary focus on Eddie Díaz and therefore Buddie, but you might also find a stray House of the Dragons, Interview with the Vampire, Black Sails or whatever else might strike my fancy post. I was great at tagging a decade ago. Now I’m not.

You can also find with the birds on fka Twitter, and I dabble in fic writing over on AO3 under the same handle. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out!

i know a lot of fans care way less about bobby and athena than other characters (which is fine!) but i really don't understand the claim that last night's episode was purely filler when it advanced bobby, athena, buck and madney's plotlines... i am always disappointed when we get less eddie but in terms of "time-sensitive" storylines, if they were moving focus to bobby and athena next episode, it made sense to show a little bit of buck in the immediate aftermath of the break up (while audiences still rmr it) and eddie being happy/silly in the bg. we now know tommy's not a big lost love that everyone thinks he should fight for, buck has a little bit of character growth in dealing with a break up in a healthy way/focusing on his family/thinking about sexuality, and we see eddie is still choosing joy. idc that much about brad but it looks like he's a big part of the mid-season finale so it makes sense to remind the audience who he is and his dynamic with bobby. like what is the big deal.... also they haven't ignored eddie in 8a! they showed him with chris in 801, missing and not knowing what to do about chris in 804 AND 805, him thirdwheeling bucktommy (or tommy thirdwheeling buddie lol) is PART of his ongoing sexuality plot, and 806 took giant leaps forward in his self-discovery arc. sorry for coming to your inbox to complain about other fans dooming lol but i really don't get it!

Yeah I don’t want to give off the impression that I don’t value any constructive feedback that fans have this past episode, but I agree with you, nona. I have been very satisfied with the direction of this season too.

Reading the criticisms of 9-1-1's pacing, I'm not sure the show has ever met the standard that's being asked for. I'm definitely open to hearing that critique but it's hard to follow. With something like Eddie's storyline, after he made a radical mindset change last episode, you need at least a few episodes of him showing that in his daily life to signal something has changed before more big movement can happen. He was different this past episode in that he was lighter and sillier and freshly shorn like a baby sheep. I think Ryan's one interview where he said truth on the show changes at a moment's notice was right, but that also means a new truth has to breathe to have meaning. And Eddie's storylines have always had that type of rhythm. The only exception was 5B, and I'd argue 5B couldn't happen without the microdosing of his breakdown in 5A. I see similar pacing marks to that in season 8.

And because I rarely can have a full thought come at once, I wanted to add that the uncertainty over where Eddie's storyline is headed in the short term IMO doesn't apply to why he and Buck aren't talking about Chris. I think the show has been more transparent about their communication getting worse as their boundaries have gotten fuzzier, and their emotional distance feels like an urgent issue that will be addressed soon. That's something that required Tommy to be out of the picture.

At this point, I'm just stalking your page in between calls. Thank you! Not only are they not talking about Chris, they are not talking about anything.

Why didn't Eddie know Buck was baking his feelings? Have they not been spending time together outside of work even though Chris is in Texas and Tommy is no longer in the picture? Highly irregular behavior from Eddie "Hi, Buck!" Diaz and Evan "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie!" Buckley.

I got the impression that Buck had slightly isolated himself amid his stress baking. Maddie was taken by surprised too.

buck needs to loom over eddie from behind again....

Every single day for the rest of their lives!

the thing with breakup green also is that EVERYTHING else in the narrative told us they were breaking up, it was just another piece of that puzzle lol. like color theory is important but it has to go alongside everything else. like tommy wearing a different color party hat in 801 - it was just another visual indicator of what we already knew about him being on the outside of buck and eddie's dynamic

LMAO YES, EXACTLY.

Television is a collaboration between the visual, performances and of course the dialogue itself. I think it’s fun to point out patterns but it can’t be your only method of interpretation.

i hate to say it, i love him and he's beautiful, but eddie does look a little naked without the mustache now 💔

He’s so beautiful but you’re right… I am still in mourning.

Why do you think we haven't seen Eddie and Buck having a meaningful conversation this season? They haven't even talk about Chris.

Unless I’m missing something, Eddie hasn’t gone straight to Buck whenever he had emotions that are larger than his mind can momentarily conceived since his talk about whether or not he should let Shannon back into his and Christopher’s lives in season two. If Eddie isn’t directly confronted, he clams up and pretends that he’s all right, that he’s okay, that his problems are a matter of circumstances that can be ignored until the bomb eventually goes off. And Eddie hasn’t been giving off too many signs that would lead to Buck’s concern.

Athena makes me think of my family members in law enforcement. As a kid I saw them as heroes, and as a teen I saw them as the “good ones” amongst the truly awful. As a grown ass Black woman, I try not to think of their choice in career at all. I know the implications of that, but that’s not what this soapbox is about.

Dennis was very smart to request Athena as his escort. He’s spent the last 30 years trying to make amends for his past, and getting her forgiveness or even an acknowledgement from her that he’s worth saving, could be a good tradeoff for helping the State prosecute the sex trafficking ring. Not only that, Athena is savvy, strong and self-righteous enough to protect him from whoever wants to off him so that he doesn’t testify.

Excellent, in-character storytelling. The copaganda is my least favorite part of this show. But I’d be lying if I said there aren’t Athenas out there that act *like that.* That paired with Angela Bassett being the person to bring Athena to life makes it all the more realistic. That and her breaking the law left and right. She left that man in the trunk of his own car.

Six episodes later, I feel the same way. She's realistic down to her paranoia and belief that corruption is a departure from the norm while being corrupt as hell herself.

Also, I'm not going to be up in arms about a police storyline on a TV show where the top-billed actor is a police officer.

Breakup green shirt getting validated has put the fandom on speculation belief overdrive, and I'm getting carried away too! I almost expect the accident to not involve Buck or Eddie at all at this point except as rescuers just because I'm thinking so hard that it has to be one of them.

This is why I am so careful and restrictive with my activities in this fandom. It is so hard easy to fall into the Swiftie patterns of seeing clues everywhere! I can’t let myself get carried away again, that was too embarrassing.
