🎵 SONG-TO-GO 🎵

Hi hello I've been out and about and travelling the last two weeks and I've been bad about posting Songs To Go, haven't I? I'll try and make good on this week, maybe also throwing in a few bands I've come across on my travels across the UK and Canada :)

Anyway, if you're new, Song-To-Go is a weekly song poll released every Friday where I present you with new, lesser-known songs to listen to while you scroll.

As always, choose songs based on the 30-second Spotify snippets if you don’t know them (and I try to make sure there’s always something you won’t know). If you like what you hear, go listen to the full songs, they’re yours to carry along on your scroll!

[latest poll, playlist of everything so far (in order) and other/future picks]

This week’s picks are pretty much bands I’ve seen and heard round town: I saw Gwenno’s mural at Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff, and if you don’t know her (then this post is for you, isn’t it?), she’s a cool Welsh and Cornish indie/rock/synthpop musician and producer, used to be in the girl group The Pipettes in the 00s, and this song Anima is from her 2022 album Tresor, the first Cornish language album to be nominated for the Mercury Prize.

There’s one Mercury Prize winner here, English Teacher, who (at the time of scheduling this post) I’m seeing tonight and am sure I’ll sob at this song. Yorkshire poetry post punk that couldn’t come from anywhere else in the country, if you don’t know them.

I’ve also got a Birmingham synth punk duo whose show I walked into opposite the Clwb whilst we waited for the venue to open, and who wrote a very amusing post punk piece on the Homes Under The Hammer presenter of the same name. Another post punk duo from New Zealand who are friends of a good friend of mine from there, who remind me of the 80s greats! Then I’ve got some cool Canadian RnB-jazz from Alberta.

Picture evidence of all this under the cut ;) Tell me what you enjoyed, reblog to pass it on, and hopefully I’ll be more regular from next week. Happy listening!

Friday is here, so I've got another Song-To-Go poll hot n' ready to go for you!

If you're new, hello and welcome! Song-To-Go is a weekly song poll released every Friday where I present you with new, lesser-known songs to listen to while you scroll.

As always, choose songs based on the 30-second Spotify snippets if you don’t know them (and I try to make sure there’s always something you won’t know). If you like what you hear, go listen to the full songs, they’re yours to carry along on your scroll!

[last week’s poll, playlist of everything so far (in order) and other/future picks]

*STERLING PRESS - DOORBELL. God. What an idiotic thing to miss.

Happy scrolling! This week, I've picked out downtempo lesbian indie with lyrics that still eat my brain, feminist queer punk from Belfast, cool modern indie with the Bass up loud, a brand new post punk album I am obsessed, obsessed, obsessed with right now and Portuguese-Welsh folky indie. It’s quite indie this week.

Let me know what you enjoyed, what you want to hear more of, what surprised you, etc etc. Reblog to tell your friends and me in the tags, and come back next Friday for another Song To Go poll!

It's Friday, so I'm back working drive-thru at the Song-to-go delivery window! Come collect your weekly listen of songs to carry with you on your scroll!

If you're new, firstly, hi! Song-To-Go is a weekly song poll presenting you with new, lesser-known songs as a takeaway musical meal.

As always, choose songs based on the 30-second Spotify snippets if you don’t know them (and I try to make sure there’s always something you won’t know). If you like what you hear, go listen to the full songs, they’re yours* to carry along on your trip!

*as in add them to your library etc., if you like them a lot come ask me and I’ll try and dig up a Bandcamp like for you, hee hee

[last week’s poll, playlist of everything so far (in order) and more]

I started last week's poll a couple of days late, so that's still open right now (as all song polls are technically 'open' to being discovered, you can still reblog them, you just can't vote but I feel like most people reblog and tell me what they like anyway! Which I love :) )

Happy scrolling! This week, I've picked out a French (Montreal) album I've been obsessed with anticipating winter vibes, some classic rock 'n' roll, beauuuutiful Welsh pop harmonies, some London Asian fusion pop, futuristic electrofunk and because it's me, always some weirdo-post punk :)

Liked anything? Let me know in the tags! Tell your friends! Come back next week!

Happy listening!

🎵 SONG-TO-GO 🎵

Okay I’m late this week and it’s not Friday, but I’m sitting and waiting for my own takeout to-go, so I figured it’s time for me to serve up this week’s Song-To-Go!

The concept: Song-To-Go is a weekly song poll to take a lesser-known song along with you as you scroll.

As always, choose songs based on the 30-second Spotify snippets if you don’t know them (I’ve tried to make sure there’s something you won’t know), and if you like them, go listen to the full songs, they’re yours to carry along on your trip!

[last week’s poll, playlist of everything so far (in order) and more. Fun fact, this series has now had over 45 songs. All that in a month?! You're joking if you tell me there isn't enough good new music out there ;) ]

This week's picks: Canadian indie pop (something Canada excels at), arty British post punk with horn and horniness intact, Welsh language alt rock, something Strokesy, rave from the Montreal underground and some grungy American alt rock.

This poll came a few days late, so expect it to overlap some with this Friday's song poll for the following week: I'm going to stick with the new music Friday thing. Still, pass it along, tell your friends, reblog it and tell me what your liked!

[update: by the time drafting this was done I was no longer stood before a takeaway shop. God, that was three days ago.]

It's Friday again, which means unbelievably, I get to do yet another song wizard new music Friday. For a 5th week! Somehow you're all still here. I'm not out of music, so let's do this!

For the uninitiated, Song-To-Go is a weekly song poll to take a lesser-known song along with you as you scroll!

As with last week, choose songs based on the 30-second Spotify snippets if you don’t know them (I’ve tried to make sure there’s something you won’t know), and if you like them they’re yours* to carry along on your trip!

*as in add them to your library etc., if you like them a lot come ask me and I’ll try and dig up a Bandcamp like for you, hee hee

[last week’s poll, now complete, and you can see the results. Or just listen to more music! And then tell me about it :) ]

This week's picks are all about rock and weird but really catchy indie (and the one ska punk track). What other genres do you want to hear in the next few weeks?

As always, poll’s open for a week, so if you miss this one, I’ll be back with another one by next Friday. I think I'll also keep a running playlist of everything I've posted so far, plus others I'm planning to use for upcoming weeks because honestly, I don't really feel like there's a magician's cloth I'm pulling back to reveal songs. A lot of this is actually just stuff I've played on introducing radio over the last 4 years :P

The growing playlist, here.

Happy scrolling! If you want to give your mutuals a few new songs, reblog and tell them what you liked. Happy listening!

Time for The Last Shadow Puppets propaganda @aeolianblues! Honestly the best place to start is to check out their albums as (very sadly) there are only two of them with a handful of b-sides and covers, but as we've been having fun with song rec polls lately I've made one featuring my favourite TLSP songs and some handy links 🥰

Definitely recommend checking out some of their music videos as well, especially those from the Everything You've Come To Expect era as they're very cinematic and camp, but if you only watch one video from these two then pleeease make it Les Cactus. Nothing will erase the myth of Alex Turner being a cool and suave rockstar faster... which is great, because I much prefer him when he's being goofy and having fun 🥰

(also fellow TLSP-mutuals please feel free to add your own propaganda and vote in the poll... or yell at me for my song choices 😅)

Just found a band called Isabelle & Sebastian and I had to exclaim, oh, come on! (That’s so nearly Belle & Sebastian)

But it turns out, they’re a duo of teenagers who actually just happen to be named Isabelle and Sebastian respectively, and if you like a bit of indie pop, you’ll like their tunes. Guess I just found a new band!

It’s Friday and I’ve had fun with this over the last few weeks, so I’m back bearing more songs! Here’s another song wizard new music Friday, a weekly poll to take a lesser-known song along with you as you scroll!

As with last week, choose songs based on the 30-second Spotify snippets if you don’t know them (I’ve tried to make sure there’s something new and lesser known), and if you like them they’re yours* to carry take on your trip!

*as in add them to your library etc., if you like them a lot come ask me and I’ll try and dig up a Bandcamp like for you, hee hee

[last week’s poll, which itself links back to the first week’s, which aren’t open anymore, in case you wanted more songs to take with you. Or just come talk to me, I love a music chat! Always.]

Poll’s open for a week, but we’ve been going three weeks (!) now, so if you miss this one, I’ll hopefully be back with another next Friday.

Any genres you’d want me to throw in more music from? I know my circle of influence is very alt and rock, so I’ve been sparing with my jazz, pop and hip hop picks, but if you want more, I’m happy to add more of them!

Happy scrolling! If you want to give your dash a few songs, reblog, I’m just bored :)

Favourite band in the world returns

!!

That slice guitar can eat my soul I do not care. Or maybe that’s not the best way to phrase it. I do care, I’m loving this so much!

The Astros go ever-so-slightly denim and country, and it comes out as some of the most beautiful, diamond-studded indie I’ve heard this month. Song of the Day. Who does it remind you of?

Avatar

I’m going to try and turn Arctic Monkeys fans onto a newer band called Picture Parlour, because I find they remind me of some of the more swaggering sides of Arctic Monkeys, and their singer has something in her voice that reminds me of Alex singing. Check this out!

For your libraries:

I’ve got to know, AM fans: am I right? Do you get that AM vibe from them?

(Picture Partly are a new band from London, Ronnie is their third ever single.)

WHEN HE WAS LITTLE.

HE WORRIED THAT BEES WOULD MISTAKE HIS EYES FOR FLOWERS AND COME SIT ON THEM, I COULD CRY

How does everything this band say turn out to have such a rich wealth of a world behind it??

(This is Grian Chatten talking about Favourite on Jack Saunders’ show last month. Clip to follow tomorrow; I gotta sleep)

The thing is that every single time I listen to a Little Simz song, I need to just stand still and process it like new, more often than not I'm just left standing there one hand over my mouth, just completely taken over by her work. The stakes are so high. The struggles are so poignant. The victories so joyous, the descriptions so clear and vivid. She really is the crowned leader of modern British hip hop. What a visionary.

I’ve said it before I’ll say it again: The Astros!! Cool psychedelic indie rock that knows how to throw in a sick riff, and a band with a real eye for visuals, colours and a well-coordinated band outfit.

I am so mad that they aren’t bigger that I am literally throwing together a writing portfolio to send to Exclaim! Magazine just so I can write a review about these boys in the national papers.

Oh my god, if you’re having a bad day or just want a bit of fun, cute uplifting indie pop, can I recommend Max Blansjaar’s new song Anna Madonna? This one is going right into the ‘melt in your mouth liquid-gold indie bangers’ playlist, or whatever it was called. If you want, I’ll make the effort to find that playlist, it was a great list but I Can’t Remember Its Name

But this is just a great song. Absolutely puts me in a different mood
