“The idea of Jarvis being a sex symbol was utterly, utterly hilarious. ‘Cos Smash Hits were starting to pick up on Pulp and starting to go on about sexy Jarvis, and people were just in fits of laughter. You know, this spaz who could fall over the pattern in the carpet, who was a scruff and he’s not washed his hair in six weeks-and he’s sexy? You’re fucking kidding! If you look at Pulp in 1986 and then in 1992, and say, “This man is a sex symbol,” you’d say “Go and get yourself examined.” But I suppose for him there was a “I’ve never had anyone say this about me; I will accentuate it” angle. I don’t know.”

— Nick Banks on Jarvis Cocker (from Truth and Beauty: The Story of Pulp)
