must be fascinating to live inside the Grammys folks’ brains. Their knowledge of music scenes and musicians is so surface level. The lists that come out always look like someone panicking while being posed the question, “So you like music? Who do you listen to?” and having to Google “musicians right now”.
They look like they’re panicking and going “shit shit shit, we forgot to include someone who plays a guitar, the music fans will be mad; Foo Fighters put out an album this year right?? Phew okay then, we’re safe, that’s the rock category :)
Fuck there are no girls on that list, they’ll scream again!! Who’s that girl that everyone’s associating with like. You know. Rock music. Huh? What is it called? “Pop punk”? What does that mean, how is it “punk” and als— You mean those weird kids outside hot topic I saw when I used to drive my daughter to piano practice? But that was 15 years ago… well, I don’t really know what that sounds like, but we do need a girl on that rock list otherwise people will eat us. Oh really, her team at Warner sold cassettes? I guess, if that’s what makes people rockstars these days. I’ll take your word for it. I keep seeing her name around so you must be right. Also boygenius, I saw them on SNL! See, I’m so current on what’s happening in music. Oh shit, this list is entirely white!! Do we know anyone this year?? What, that girl isn’t white? Okay, our job is done then. I’m so good at music :)”

Tonight’s Grammys, from the POV of an Indiehead
Best thing about the Grammys was the Internet issues tbh. Genuinely cackled at the Strokes finding out real time that they won and having terrible network issues (I think it was on the Grammys end, not the artists, there were too many artists cutting out for it to be their fault!)
Kinda disappointed that Fontaines D.C. didn’t win Best Rock album for A Hero’s Death though, but it’s not too surprising.
The Strokes, winning Best Rock album for The New Abnormal: “I think we kinda won this on the album name alone” lmao, I remember how my understanding of the album title did a full 360 within three months of the album coming out!
Beck won for Hyperspace! Best non-classical engineering, I think it was. He was so clueless, I mean I don’t blame them, Zoom anything just sounds confusing. One of the winners was on mute throughout their speech and so they decided to cut their losses and move on to the next category...
I was really chuffed to see Rufus Wainwright performing, it’s astonishing how his voice sounds just as good and smooth as album 1 from 20 years ago! (Cigarettes And Chocolate Milk anyone? I’m afraid it’s become the Creep to his Radiohead unfortunately...) (also yes I know that song was on Poses)
Also pleased to see Lido Pimienta performing, her album Miss Columbia is such a treat to listen to. I’m also a new fan of Poppy (am I spelling her name right? She’s the first female solo vocalist to earn a nomination in metal tonight!) and Burna Boy after today! (I‘d heard of Burna Boy before, but was a bit hesitant to throw myself headfirst into the discography of a bona fide pop star (rather, superstar, at least in his native Nigeria!) Happy to be wrong this time (the last time I was “wrong” about it, I discovered CHVRCHES) :)
Anyway, that’s my roundup of the Grammys as per their relevance to an indie/alt/rock-head!
Sooo Beyonce’s eight-year old has been nominated for a Grammy for appearing in backing vocals on her song... if you were worried the Grammys actually meant anything, I hope this helps
