Adding to the thread:

Brighton synthpop duo Powder Paint. I’m deviating a bit from the indie rock/punk theme here, but Powder Paint make some infectious synth riffs! Hailing from Brighton in the UK, Powder Paint released their first EP this January, and I’m excited for what comes next from them. As they put it, they’re “playing fast n' loose with chords and gender”.

Listen/purchase: Powderpaint by Powderpaint

This is part of the No SWMRS no problem thread, a thread for new music I’d like to promote instead of SWMRS.

Last one from me tonight, M.A.Z.E. from Japan. I love megaphone vocals, so this hits a sweet spot for me. Their album is insane, so I’ve linked the whole package. Zipper Back, Spread The Germicide and Human Brain are highlights, but the whole album slaps.

Listen/purchase: Tour Tape by M.A.Z.E.

Also, just remembered, freaking Otoboke Beaver. They’re brilliant. I’ll add them tomorrow as I’m off to bed (pls, says my poor body).

Tagged No SWMRS no problem cuz we don’t need them. I couldn’t thread this, so I made a tag and you can find many other great bands to listen to instead there. I hope you enjoy them!

More punk from Northern Ireland, this is Womansplain by Gender Chores. Classic punk, under two minutes, gets to the point, punky guitars. If you’re looking for something more alt-rock or longer (cuz you couldn’t get enough of them), find Territory on their Womansplain EP. I love that song.

Just your routine friendly reminder that we don’t need SWMRS and there’s instead a lot of great punk, indie and alternative music coming from the women, the punks of colour, the queer musicians on the scene and promoting them is what I’m here to do.

Find the rest of these posts tagged No SWMRS no problem, cuz.

If it’s punk music you want, I can’t not mention Fuck U Pay Us from LA. Every feminist’s idols, FUPU have just one album, recorded live at a gig. Between that and posted videos of live performances, they’re right up there as punk legends on the scene and I look up to them. So much.

If you’re looking for punk music to add to your library instead of SWMRS, what better way to do it than with the song Burn Ye Old White Male Patriarchy, Burn? by four WOC punks? Also do yourself a favour and watch their live gigs. They’re something else.

Tagged No SWMRS no problem cuz we don’t need SWMRS. Cut out the toxicity by adding more punks from underrepresented communities, and safe spaces will build themselves. (Tag cuz I can’t do a thread of Bandcamp embeds)

Dirty Princess Band are a female punk trio from Portland, Oregon.

“The man wants to take my rights/I’ll put up a screaming fight” is what I like hearing in my punk rock. According to the band, 'The man' represents our oppressive system. 'The chevy van' represents the idea of the American dream and the freedom it promises. Only to find out it all ends the same. SHACKLED!”

An added bonus here, if you love fuzz, DPB are all in for it.

Show some love for our punks of colour, POC punks unite!

Tagged No SWMRS no problem cuz we don’t need more status quo “oppressed” musicians. Fill your heart on this tag.

You’ve probably heard of Say Sue Me from Busan, South Korea, who won fans globally for being janglepop HEROES. Old Town is from their stellar debut album, Where We Were Together. Follow the embed link and listen to the whole album, I couldn’t move until the album was over. It’s mesmerising, and in a tangential way, reminds me of Johnny Marr, which is great.

Tagged No SWMRS no problem cuz we don’t need them. Find other recommendations under this tag, I’m far from done yet. (Or maybe I need to sleep and will add more bands tomorrow/next week cuz I have a final I REALLY should be studying for this week, but what I’m saying is, watch this space.)

Big Shouty by Problem Patterns, a feminist punk song, aptly described, because sometimes, your disgust can only be shouted big. Problem Patterns are from Belfast, NI, and I LOVE THEIR MUSIC.

This belongs to a thread tagged No SWMRS no problem cuz. There’s good music out there without being hung up on unapologetic creeps.

If you’re down for some softer Irish punk, try Pillow Queens from Dublin. What can I say except their vibe is relaxing yet headbangable. It’s all you ask for in a band!

This is a part of the No SWMRS no problem thread, made to fill a SWMRS shaped indie/punk void for anyone that wants it, for me, it’s just an excuse to push some of these great bands forward.

Continuing the No SWMRS no problem thread:

London post-punk band Es (I think it’s pronounced Ee’s). I LOVE their droning post-punk sound, and their song Chemical about having no energy and just being so tired all the time hit a spot with me.

Listen/purchase: Less of Everything by Es

Hello SWMRS ex-fans community. I’m considering deleting all my photos from a SWMRS gig I attended, and the plus side is 200+ less pictures and videos.

But there are two ways of looking at this and I’m conflicted:

On the one hand, fuck this hypocritical shit, I can’t support them like this now. Trash goes in the dustbin.

On the other hand, I don’t want to let gaslighters that erase the experiences of women take away the best night I’ve had in a while.

Welp, one week of radio silence and no attempts to apologise or make amends from SWMRS or Joey (refusing to acknowledge the crux of the situation invalidates an apology. Btw dude, if someone is telling their side of the story, you don’t get to “disagree” with their experience. It’s her experience. You get to tell your side, although you don’t seem to want to as of yet, but you don’t get to rubbish her side of the story. It’s hers. It doesn’t need your validation.)

I’ll be honest when I say I’d have preferred them to publicly improve and come back as better human beings, because I’d rather see progress and growth than the possibility of someone having turned into a bitter anti-feminist/abuser, god knows we have enough of those out there, that‘s the only thing I’m still holding out for, but I’m super disappointed as someone who went to their gig, felt safe, had fun, and importantly, felt empowered. I’d gone as far as calling it the best night of my life.

Guess it’s time to form my own girl punk rock band and be bigger, better, louder and angrier.
