You're forgetting when Damon massively took issue with Jarvis' Michael Jackson protests and that one totally uncalled for time when Damon said something along the lines of 'if they can make someone like Jarvis a sex symbol then anyone can do it' in some Britpop-era interview. All Britpop interviews were just unhinged

Seeing people who were openly queer in the 80s and 90s and were either ignored or ridiculed at the time getting to openly embrace their sexuality in the present day, and wrap themselves triumphantly in their flags does something else to me, I have such a soft spot for it that I could cry

It makes me well up because these are their words and their flags too, goddamn it!! Like I love that when someone that big is embracing a flag, it is a great show of solidarity and is marking themselves and their shows as safe spaces for queer expression… but this is also who they are! Those embraces of joy are as much for them as for us! These flags, these words, belong to them too! And I’m so happy to see them being able to wield them with the sort of pride that was once a lot harder to have taken seriously.

Faves. Send me more please.

Plastic Beach by Gorillaz (2010). I think this is my favourite Gorillaz album, and so I was delighted to find the attached press release sent to us when the album came out, from January 2010. Someone at Parlophone liked us for a period of 30 years, we have every single Blur album (except the new one, Ballad of Darren, but I think that’s a given. No one sends CDs anymore), and all Gorillaz albums before Humanz. I love giving them a spin on air, me.

Blur - Girls & Boys, Coachella 2024, weekend 2 (20 April 2024)

‘Wow... sorry, but for me, that's like... that's the spirit.’

Damon was in a playful mood during this song, wasn't he? Taking full advantage of a slightly more responsive crowd than weekend 1 of Coachella, he got up into the crowd, headbutted a beach ball, was a bit purposely out of time and key to change things up; "spin it if you want: girls sing 'boys', boys sing 'girls'" during the second chorus, and I think he was pleased to be playing with and playing to a crowd that was receptive. Slightly shambolic performance, but isn't that the Blur we know and love.

I noticed only now that Damon's done something I often do (that maybe bums out people 20 years older than me), which is that since I didn't really live through the 90s, out of habit, I've always sung, 'Love in the 90s was paranoid' (instead of 'is paranoid'), and Damon did the same here. Huh.

Anyway, this performance was a bit mad, I hope this wasn't really the last time we see it!

Blur - Song 2 (Coachella 2024, second weekend)

“Yeah, man. The truth of Coachella, isn't it? Second week. Music fans! People who appreciate music! Sounds good to me.”

Blur performing a cheeky, almost shambolic version of Song 2 at Coachella, during the second weekend of performances, 20 April 2024. Damon commented on how the crowd seemed a little better this weekend, compared to the previous week where he'd complained about the dead crowd, saying 'you're never going to fucking see us again, you may as well sing along.'

This week, he noted the oft-repeated myth about how the first weekend of Coachella gets the influencer crowd, the second week tends to get the music fans.

He seemed kind of bashful throughout the performances of both Girls and Boys and Song 2, before slightly settling into a more serious performance on The Narcissist and set closer Tender.

A friend of mine to whom I showed the Girls And Boys performance said they looked unrehearsed, it sounded a mix between that and arsing around, but when they (and in particular Damon) did pull it together, they sounded fantastic. That almost-growl on Song 2 was not something I expected Damon to be able to pull off, but it sounded gorgeous, powerful, rock n roll.

They can't end it like this. One of two: we need the Wembley show mixed, mastered and pro-shot (I have heard whispers that this is in fact in the works), and/or we need a last tour to stops that actually care about Blur the musicians. Not the influencers, but fans. Fuck, I don't even think North American fans are going to get this one. Throw us under the bus. I'd even be happy if they did one last triumphant run back in England (I'm seeing Pulp this fall, so I win anyway).
