did you know that Tove Jansson's protrayal of Gollum in her illustrations of the 1962 Finnish translation of the Hobbit is what caused Tolkien to rewrite his description of Gollum's appearance his second edition of the Hobbit because he found it so incredibly monstrous but realized that it was still wholly accurate to the original text

imagine that the author of a story you loved thought your intepretation of what a character looks like was so egregious that he went back and changed the canon description just so it didn't happen again

These are Tove's illustrations I'm talking about for those who might not have seen it

Here's Gollum's description from the 1st edition of the Hobbit:

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face.

And here's Gollum's decription from the amended 2nd edition of the Hobbit:

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face.

He just thought it was important to make it incredibly clear that Gollum was meant to be a small (and slimy...) creature

We are moving next month and going through 20 years of stuff is quite enlightening - and frustrating! There are stuff I forgot ever existed. 😄 It's time to find another owner for them.

Here's what I've found so far from the attic, some have been there since we moved in 20 years ago. 😅

  • Finnish-French dictionary, 1928 edition, in absolutely aweful condition -> 🗑
  • Terre des hommes by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, 1939 edition - I don't even remember if I have read the book. Nowadays my French could use some refreshing so maybe it's time to read it, with the help of dictionary of course. 😄
  • Full book series of Catherine by Juliette Benzoni with their original Finnish covers from 1963 to 1979 in great condition. How on earth they have preserved so well, I have no idea.
  • 7 of 13 Angélique books by Sergeanne Golon. I loved the series when I was a teenager. Historical adventure romance novels were my thing then, nothing much has changed. 😄 Maybe I should read, at least, the first book again before giving away/trading/selling them.
  • Fairy tales, books, magazines and leaflets from childhood, mine and my son's. You never know when you need them, right!? 😄
  • Plushies!!! 🐻🦈🪱🐵🐺🦊 Thank god they have been in airtight boxes. 👍

Let's see what other treasures I find when I go through things. 😄

More findings and I'm not even gone through all the books yet 😄

Two copies of The Hobbit. The left one is illustrated by Tove Jansson (that's Bilbo on the cover btw). I had completely forgot we had a bound version of the book.

Illustrations: The Elvenking, Gollum and Bilbo

  • More old books, fairy tales, children's books, jigsaw puzzles of various sizes
  • Valérian and Laureline comics, Donald Ducks as hard covers, mini pocket books, pocket books and about 14 years of worth of weekly magazines. We are keeping only the hard covered ones. Everything else to recycle bin -> Toodaloo!!
  • More dictionaries, one of them is Chambers Encyclopedic English Dictionary (1994 edition), a brick of a book, just over 1400 pages, weighs a ton. It's unbelievable how much thin paper can weigh. 😄
