SotWK AU Flash Headcanon (and fic spoiler):

Elvenqueen Maereth's real name is not actually Maereth.

And--in true snarky fashion--Thranduil calls her out on it from the time they are first introduced. He looks at her, this ethereally beautiful elleth, recognizes the aura of extraordinary grace that she is trying to hide, and he bluntly and smugly tells her, "That is not your name."

Of course, Maereth is taken aback by this, and is somewhat miffed, and punishes him by refusing to reveal to him the real name he so rudely accused her of withholding. When Thranduil does eventually win her over, it's the first sign of her growing affection for him (or perhaps just forgiving him) when she finally tells him her given mother-name, or amilessë.

Maereth is an epessë, or "after-name", and is actually the epessë used by her mother, Laurinwen. Laurinwen's husband (Maereth's father, Eärondir), called his wife this to remind and reassure her of her goodness, in spite of her being a "child of a kinslayer" (Maglor), which caused most Sindar to ostracize her.

When Laurinwen sails to Valinor early in the Second Age, Maereth takes the epessë for herself, after she decides to conceal her Fëanorean lineage as much as possible. Translated into "good woman" in Sindarin, it is a very plain, boring, common name that reveals nothing about the bearer. Thranduil knows immediately that such an elf could not possibly be called something so mundane! Surely she must have an amilessë worthy of her quality.

Ultimately, even after she learns to embrace and take pride in her lineage, Maereth never goes back to using her mother-name, and continues to use and consider Maereth as her "real", regnal name throughout her life.

So what IS Elvenqueen Maereth's "true" mother-name?

Well... I can't spoil everything that I want to reveal in my fics, can I? Thranduil waited 62 years to find out. Hopefully my readers won't have to wait as long. XD

Thank you so much to @lady-of-imladris for this gorgeous fanart of Maereth--the first drawing of her that I've been gifted! :)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, @hobbitwrangler! THANKS FOR STOPPING BY!

SotWK AU Flash Headcanon:

Is Thranduil really anti-dwarf? Think again! He's shared a LONG history with the House of Durin, thousands of years before Thorin was born.

Durin III was instrumental in encouraging the early relationship between Thranduil and his (eventual) wife, Elvenqueen Maereth.

Maereth was not too impressed by Thranduil during their first meeting in Lorinand. She found him obnoxious, but she also didn't want to attract his attention, or anyone's. She was self-conscious of her identity as a Fëanorian descendant, especially amongst survivors of Doriath, and just wanted to blend into the background!

The story will be further explored in future chapters of my fic, "Sins of Our Fathers", but Thranduil and Maereth actually get their chance to bond and fall in love IN KHAZAD-DUM, of all places, while staying there as guests of Durin III. Durin was very fond of Maereth and became one of her dearest lifelong friends. (The Pretty Elf Prince was just... okay, Durin guessed.) Durin wanted Maereth to be happy, and he saw that she actually loved Thranduil, in spite of her hesitations to let him get close.

Imagine having a big, boisterous, busybody Dwarf King as your matchmaker, just rooting for you kids to get together!

Literal Eye-Candy for you; my fancast for Durin III, next to his descendant, Thorin. Durin lives!!!

SotWK AU Flash Headcanon:

Velcálë, the wife of Maglor, was the only Fëanorean wife to join her husband in the Exile of the Noldor (bringing their only child, Laurinwen, as well).

She was a kind and gentle spirit, but Maglor's brothers disliked her, viewing her as weak. They believed she only served as a distraction to Maglor, and threatened his resolve to fulfill their Oath no matter the cost.

Except for Maedhros.

Although he too wished Velcálë had just stayed behind in Valinor, Maedhros loved his sister-in-law and admired her courage and loyalty. He looked out for her and occasionally even sought her counsel (or to unburden his conscience). He often took her side over Maglor's in the many arguments the couple had.

Maedhros tried to convince Velcálë to reside in his fortress in Himring, where it was safer, but she refused to be separated from Maglor. When Velcálë was slain in the fall of Maglor's Pass during the Battle of Dagor Bragollach, Maedhros mourned her greatly. The killing of someone utterly innocent and dear to him was a blow to his character, and hardened his heart.

I don't have a final fancast for Maedhros yet, but my current frontrunner is Peter Claffey, who is set to play Duncan the Tall in the upcoming ASOIAF series. Here he is next to my fancasts for Maglor and Velcálë!

SotWK Fancast (L-R): Peter Claffey as Maedhros, Zendaya Coleman as Velcálë, Ben Barnes as Maglor

SotWK AU Flash Headcanon:

The most valuable edible in Eryn Galen is the MUSHROOM.

There are about 8,000 species of mushrooms within Greenwood the Great, and those are only the ones formally named and identified!

Mushrooms are the Elvenking Thranduil's favorite food--especially cooked in red wine. And his entire family loves them! This is extremely unusual and somewhat controversial because historically and canonically, Elves (at least in the First Age) considered them unsuitable for food.

But the Silvans love and honor mushrooms as an important part of their forest ecosystem, and boy do they know how to harness all of their uses.

Just another reason why the Woodland Elves felt a kinship towards Hobbits. (Ignore the common allegation that Legolas was indifferent towards Frodo and co. That's nonsense.)

Hello! No pressure and admittedly self serving ask (since I’m writing a fall chapter): do you have any headcanons about Silvan holidays/celebrations?

Avatar

Ooooh this question! Festivals in Eryn Galen is a BIG TOPIC, in my opinion, because those Silvans love to party! Writing an extensive post describing the annual feasts and festivals throughout each of the seasons has been on my Headcanon To-Do List for a while, and because of your Ask, I'm going to return my attention to that.

While I work on it, for purposes of your fic, here are my basic headcanons about....

AUTUMN CELEBRATIONS IN ERYN GALEN

Mereth Nuin Giliath: The Feast of Starlight

This is the biggest and arguably the most important of all annual celebrations in Eryn Galen for three reasons:

  1. It is the oldest of all Silvan feasts--older than the Woodland Realm itself. It commemorates the awakening of the Elves on the shores of Cuiviénen--literally the first event in the history of the race. Although the manner of feasting and traditions have changed over the millennia, it has been observed for as long as the eldest of the Nandor could remember.
  2. It celebrates the light of the stars and the Queen of the Stars, Elbereth Gilthoniel. The Silvans may admire Oromë most out of all the Valar, but they still highly value and honor Varda as the source of light, goodness, and protection.
  3. On a more personal note, Elvenking Thranduil met (SA 1358), was betrothed to (SA 3262), AND married (SA 3265) Elvenqueen Maereth all during the Mereth Nuin Giliath. Therefore it is an important anniversary for the royal family, which they choose to celebrate with the entire realm throughout their rule.

Art credit: Miriam Ellis

  • Mereth Nuin Giliath is celebrated both in Eryn Galen and in Lórien. In the SotWK AU, Thranduil and Maereth meet for the first time during the Mereth (see fic: "Sins of Our Fathers"). In Chapter 1 (the only chapter, so far) is the most I have attempted to describe this celebration.
  • The feast is held during the "Middle Days" (Enderi), for 3 straight nights, roughly during the first week of October.
  • It involves three nights of eating, singing, and dancing under the stars. With the entire kingdom invited, it is always the most well-attended community event.
  • In Eryn Galen, when its population was at its peak, this meant tens of thousands of revelers gathered in one place!
  • Although technically hosted by the King, the whole community pitches in and works together to arrange everything.
  • Harvest directly precedes the Mereth, so the realm is well-stocked with food for the massive celebration.
  • Hunting season comes after the Mereth, so food is additionally replenished for the coming winter.

These are just the basics, so more details will follow in the complete "Celebrations by Season in Eryn Galen" post. Coming soon...hopefully! :) I will tag you, @dilettantefeminist -- thank you again for prompting me to think about this!

hi! in the spirit of showing oc love, I was wondering if there's a particular oc you're looking forward to introducing to people in upcoming projects?

Avatar

I'm tripping over myself to answer this Ask! (Thank you thank you thank you, Ace!)

May I please introduce two?

I've been shy about sharing these because they're not only Silmarillion OCs (I'm still intimidated by the Silm fandom, even though I have many lovely Mutuals from there, you included), they're OC WIVES of Silm Canons. Two of the most popular Silm canons. I'm pretty sure OC creators have been flogged for that.

But since you asked... onward with SotWK AU reveals and spoilers! The stories are tragic because that's the First Age for you!

Velcálë Vanandur

Wife of Maglor and grandmother of Elvenqueen Maereth (wife of Thranduil)

SotWK Fancast: Zendaya Coleman as Velcálë

  • Her name means "flame doer" in Quenya.
  • Velcálë had one child with Maglor, a daughter named Laurinwen, who was born and grew up in Tirion.
  • She was a Noldorin apprentice who served directly under Vána, and was thus given the prestigious epithet "Vanandur" (Servant of Vána).
  • She was a great tender of gardens, and her songs could cause plants to immediately flower or bear fruit.
  • Only out of love and devotion to Maglor did she decide to follow the Fëanorians in Exile, taking their daughter with them.
  • Velcálë was greatly affected by the violence of her kin and constantly homesick for Valinor. A lover of light and warmth, she suffered in the harsh lands where her family dwelt.
  • The toll of her heartbreak muted the strength and power she possessed in Valimar to nearly nothing, although she did her best to help sustain their people by cultivating the lands for limited-scale food production.
  • Because she tried to hold Maglor back from "necessary" violence and constantly made him question his commitment to the Oath, she was disliked by all of her brothers-in-law, except for Maedhros.
  • Velcálë was eventually slain in the battle of Dagor Bragollach when Himlad fell, leading to a permanent estrangement between Maglor and his daughter, Laurinwen.

Elemírë

Wife of Glorfindel and twin sister of Elenwë (wife of Turgon)

SotWK Fancast: Vanessa Kirby as Elemírë

  • Elemírë had a fierce warrior’s spirit, but violence of any kind was considered unbecoming by her family.
  • She joined the Exile because she did not want to be separated from her sister Elenwë, a gentle spirit whom she always sought to protect.
  • She was loved by her childhood friend, Glorfindel. Although she reciprocated his feelings, he was the more passionate and demonstrative one. Elemírë factored in Glorfindel's own decision to (reluctantly) join the Exile.
  • Elemírë nearly died trying to dive under the Grinding Ice to save her sister, but she was held back by Glorfindel. This embittered her heart towards him. Instead of following Turgon to Vinyamar (and eventually Gondolin), she decided to join Fingon’s people.
  • Over the course of the decades, she grew into a skilled cavalry rider, and was accepted into the ranks of Fingon. She became devoted to Fingon for personally mentoring and training her.
  • During the Long Peace, Glorfindel (who had missed and yearned for Elemírë all those years), sought permission from Turgon to leave Gondolin so he could seek her out.
  • He came to Hithlum reaffirming his love for her and seeking her hand in marriage. Elemírë would not say yes, but could not bring herself to refuse him either. Glorfindel committed to staying for as long as needed to convince her, and this courtship lasted for nearly half a century.
  • Eventually, Fingon himself encouraged Elemírë to realize and follow her true desires for peace and love. She betrothed herself to Glorfindel and returned to Gondolin with him.
  • The couple married and bore one child, a son named Ingwil.
  • As the Lady of the House of the Golden Flower, Elemírë was also one of its fiercest warriors. She fought alongside her husband for the first time in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
  • Elemírë died during the Fall of Gondolin, rescuing her son from an attacking fire drake, which she successfully slayed before perishing.

Thank you again for the ask @hobbitwrangler, and for encouraging my foray into the Silm fandom. I hope you (and anyone reading this) enjoy learning about these OC ladies! Maybe with the right amount of courage, time, and motivation, I may someday even write some actual one-shots including them!

Thank you for the Ask! Although this list is still messy and incomplete, answering it puts me one step closer to getting an official fancast list done! :)

What an amazing fancast you have! Glorfindel is pretty hard to cast and that got me thinking... My first choice would have been Alexander Skarsgård, he would be pretty awesome in that role - tall, handsome, not to mention his physique. Besides he is one of my faves - just like Glorfindel!

I noticed you cast him as an oc (yay for that btw 🥰) , so I thought there must be another who could pull it off. Joe Manganiello and Tom Hopper might physically but they are not exactly ethereal, you know what I mean. 😄

What if I'm thinking this the wrong way, what about older celebs, e.g. Hollywood golden age celebs? Gregory Peck (ooh, he could because he was tall, handsome, usually played courageous, heroic good guys, authority figures and leaders - but he is far from blonde, oh shoot!), Errol Flynn (I must be nuts even thinking 🤣), Robert Taylor (the man with the perfect profile - still no), Stewart Granger (dark), damn! Even Paul Newman and Robert Redford won't do.

So Google, you know everthing, give me options...ooh, who is that!? He has the perfect features, looks ethereal and has longish blonde hair...Luke Eisner. Wait, he looks familiar, where have I seen him? IMDB my friend, tell me...he was in Tall Girl. Yeah, he played the Swedish exchange student.

Luke is a model and a musician too. He is perfect for an elf, but as Glorfindel? A great contender. What do you think?

SotWK OC Spotlight: Prince Turhir Thranduilion

  • Born in Third Age 37, the second son and child of Elvenking Thranduil and Elvenqueen Maereth.
  • His name means “Victorious Master” in Sindarin.
  • Towering at 7 feet, 6 inches, he is not only the tallest member of Thranduil’s family, but he is the tallest of all elves born in the Woodland Realm, in all of its history. (For reference, Thranduil is 7 feet, 3 inches, and the other Thranduilions are all less than 7 feet.)
  • As a child, Turhir had difficulty making friends with elflings close to his age. Since he was always much bigger and physically stronger, even from infancy, it was hard for him to play normally with them. His size and his more somber nature also made his childhood peers uncomfortable around him--and it was difficult enough to relate to a prince!
  • As a result, Turhir was rather lonely in childhood and spent most of his time with his mother, his older brother Mirion, and his tutors.
  • Otherwise, he spent his alone time reading and thus grew up into an avid reader. He especially enjoys narrative poems, and became an eloquent writer and poet himself.
  • He is a skilled carpenter and builder who helps construct community buildings in his spare time.
  • He is a member of the very exclusive guild of Greenwood woodcutters--laborers who fell trees, which is a highly restricted and regulated practice.
  • Turhir is a horsemaster and was the primary trainer of the arroch breed that existed only in Greenwood (discussed in this post). He had a close relationship with the ancient ancestors of the Rohirrim who once dwelt near Greenwood.

Moodboard credit: @alicent-targaryen (Thank you again!). Fancast for Turhir: Sam Heughan

  • But the talent Turhir is most famous for, by far, is his battle prowess, which is discussed in this post. Thranduil noticed his son’s martial abilities very early on and persuaded the reluctant Elvenqueen to let their son begin training with Master Trainer Ivenil before he had properly come of age.
  • Turhir carries the official title of the King’s Champion, and would be called on to fight for the crown and kingdom if single combat is required.
  • Although Turhir loves tournaments, especially jousting, his size and skill give him too large an advantage over his opponents. It has been deemed hazardous for him to participate in these types of competitions, so he is usually left only to spectate.
  • Occasionally, he is able to publicly demonstrate his skills by competing against his own father and brothers in special events limited within the royal family.
  • His Royal Highness Turhir’s regency in north-western Greenwood (the province he governs) is seated in Thangail (“shield-fence” in Sindarin), one of the realm’s most recently established cities, built to house the largest military base in the kingdom.
  • Turhir is the closest in personality with his father, but Thranduil tends to be hardest on him compared to his other sons. Turhir is thus closer to his mother and is the most protective of her.
  • Turhir considers Mirion and Arvellas his closest friends in the world, and witnessing both their deaths nearly drove him to insanity.
  • Although he is very noble and good-hearted, Turhir is the most prone to being corrupted by Darkness in his family, and Sauron himself grew aware and took interest in this.

Much thanks again to @cheryl-of-kangsu for making this request!

So far, Turhir has drawn the least amount of interest among the Thranduilion Princes, which is not necessarily surprising to me, since that's how it would probably be in "real Middle-earth life". You might not like him at first glance, but once you get beneath the layers, there's a lot to admire there. He's an excellent hero for the "enemies to lovers" trope, and is a terrific Mr. Darcy archetype.

Also, I don't write and don't plan to write smut for the Thranduilions, but if there was ever a great leading man for that sort of thing among Thranduil's sons, Turhir would be my endorsed candidate. Just a creator's opinion. ;)

Hi, I was just wondering if you have any thoughts on Oropher’s wife/Thranduil’s mum? Is she dead? If so, how did she die? If she’s alive, is she still in the Greenwood or is she kicking about elsewhere? I have my own half-baked ideas but I wondered what yours were

Avatar

Oooh thank you for asking for my thoughts on this! I got thoughts on everything, like a good Thranduil-obssessor. *pulls out my Notes folder* This dear, sweet lady never gets any attention, but she is certainly not forgotten by me!

I mentioned Thranduil's mother in this headcanon post about his birth, as well as my one-shot fic The Crown, but I am happy to provide more info below!

Thranduil's Mother in the SotWK AU

  • Oropher's wife was Lady Meluiel of Doriath, a Sinda from the same clan of Teleri that migrated into Beleriand, following Elu Thingol.
  • Apart from being Thranduil’s mother, she was also the younger sister of the great Beleg Cúthalion, which made Beleg Thranduil's uncle and mentor. (more HC info on their relationship here)
  • Meluiel was a trusted handmaiden to Queen Melian, and for a time also helped raise Lúthien Tinúviel during her childhood.
  • She was known for her sweet and cheerful disposition, contrasting with Oropher's more somber personality, but Oropher loved her so very deeply.
  • Thranduil was a bit of a rebellious child, with a wilder spirit than Lord Oropher would have preferred, so it was not uncommon for Meluiel to have to play mediator between father and son.
  • She would often encourage Thranduil to pursue the interests Oropher disliked, and behave according to his true self, rather than adjust his personality to please his father. Thranduil took this to heart and developed a fierce independence from his father (and his like-minded kinsmen) early on.
  • Sadly, Meluiel was among the many Elves of Doriath who perished in the Second Kinslaying. At the time, she was a lady in Queen Nimloth's court and was with her at the time of the attack. Meluiel was slain in a final stand trying to protect the young princes, Eluréd and Elurín.
  • For this reason, Oropher developed an unforgiving prejudice and hatred for the Noldor, which he carried with him for the rest of his life. This is also why he fought against Thranduil's love for Maereth (of direct Fëanorian descent--the horror!) for centuries before he finally (and reluctantly) consented to their union.
  • Thranduil was only 54 years old when his mother died; enough to have memories of her and to miss her terribly. As a result, he too was angry at the Noldor, and remained biased against them.
  • However, his bias was not strong enough to prevent him from fighting alongside Noldorin warriors during the War of Wrath. During this war, Thranduil befriended a few Noldor, some of whom he continued to associate with in the Second Age while he lived in Lindon. The most notable of these friends is Ivenil (a SotWK OC, appears in "Greenleaf's Day Out"), who followed Thranduil and his Sindarin kin to Greenwood. He eventually became an important member of King Thranduil's council.
  • Thranduil's openness of mind and ability to see past his own hate and prejudices in effect made him a stronger ruler than his father, since it allowed him to foster relationships with the other Elf-lords and peoples of Middle-earth--even the Dwarves!
  • His beloved mother would have been proud. <3

Hobbits and the Greenwood Elves

Happy Hobbit Day! In honor of Bilbo and Frodo’s birthdays, please enjoy these headcanons regarding the history and friendship between the Hobbits of the Shire (Bilbo’s people) and the Silvan Elves of Greenwood (Thranduil’s people).

Requested by my dear @laneynoir a while back--thank you for your patience!

Disclaimer: Please note that a good portion of the info below are SotWK AU headcanons only, inspired by official Tolkien canon.

Hobbits and the Greenwood Elves

Early Hobbits in Rhovanion

  • The Silvan Elves of Greenwood (Thranduil’s people) encountered the early “breeds” of Hobbit centuries before they came to the attention of the peoples who dwelt west of the mountains.
  • All three Hobbit breeds (Fallohides, Harfoots, Stoors) resided in the lands surrounding the Woodland Realm as early as the start of Thranduil’s reign, but for many years they kept to themselves and avoided contact with other races.
  • The Fallohides, from whom the Brandybucks, Tooks, and Bolgers descended, initially dwelt in the southern eves of Greenwood and first made friends with the Northmen in their area. Hearing tales from the Men regarding the benevolence of the Elvenking and his family, the Fallowhides accepted the outreach of Thranduil and his people, and eventually formed friendships with them.
  • The Stoors, who lived a little further away in the Vales of Anduin, quickly followed suit. They even established low-level trade with the Silvan Elves, exchanging their catches from the Anduin for products from the Greenwood.
  • The Harfoots were shyer of the Elves and lived closer to the foot of the Misty Mountains, and therefore did not have as close relations with the Silvans as the other two clans.
  • Two Greenwood Princes were more familiar with the Fallohides and Stoors than the rest of their family: Princes Turhir and Gelir, since the western lands under their guardianship were closest to the dwellings of the hobbits.
  • Prince Gelir had a special fondness for Hobbits, delighting most especially in their simple yet lively customs and culture. He continued to value friendship with them long after he departed from the Elvenking’s realm.

Once again you spoil the fandom with your amazing headcanons. I love how you addressed every aspect of this relationship, even Legolas' behaviour. This was such a pleasure to read! ❤

I wish more people would appreciate your world building (this has far too few notes btw).
