German Musicals Masterpost - Part One
This master post is meant for all people who are interested in German musicals, but maybe don’t know so much about them or just don’t speak the language. The German musical landscape is very interesting and unique, in my opinion not as limited as West End or Broadway can be. It’s quite sad that because of the language barrier, many of these musicals are fairly unknown, even though they’re just as good or better than some of the things you see in America or the UK and that’s why I’m trying to give you a way to find out more about them and watch them. This is the first part with only three musicals so far, but I will make more masterposts if there’s interest! You have to register to watch the videos on the vk.com website, I’m sorry, but if you want, I can look for replacements on tudou. If you have any questions, requests or thoughts of any sort, please come to me, I will do my best to help!

Marianne's Les Mis research folder
Yep, I am dumping the entire contents of my Les Mis research folders online.
OKAY. Here’s the deal. First of all, if you had any illusions that you’d learn all my secrets or that my research folder is in any way well-organized or well-balanced, ha ha haaaa, sorry to disappoint you, it’s mostly random crap downloaded off Google Books/Gallica/Groupe Hugo/Wikimedia Commons. It’s also mostly in French. But, that said, there’s some really useful reference stuff in there (from police procedure manuals to university codes and study guides to baby-naming books) and also a lot of really interesting random crap.
There are also a few things that are in no way, shape, or form in the public domain, so I’m going to have to ask you to NOT REPOST THESE LINKS OUTSIDE TUMBLR. Reblog if you want to, link people to this Tumblr post if you want to, but if I start seeing traffic hit this folder via links from Facebook or random forums or wherever, the whole thing is going down.
We good? Okay then!
General PSA
There is no such thing as “proper English.” You cannot tell someone’s intelligence by the type of English they speak. If you are about to tell someone that their English is wrong , chances are that “rule” is outdated and irrelevant.
Also, that whole “200 words for snow” or whatever the fuck the number is is a bunch of bullshit, and no, having no words for something does not determine your ability to comprehend said thing. Also, other languages are just as complex as English, and they are just as efficient and useful as English.
Everyone has an accent. Accents that sound foreign to you are not a sign of insufficient effort put into learning a language. Second language acquisition is much harder than you probably think. Accents, speaking non-standard English, or speaking a non-English language signify literally nothing about the intelligence, work ethic, or morality of a person.
Language is shared consciousness. We create meaning, in a sense, but you can’t just decide that an offensive or problematic word means something else and act like that solves the issue, because meaning is not created by individuals, it is created in our shared societal consciousness.
At the same time, new words can and will be created, and they may or may not ever become fully incorporated, but it is absolutely natural for new words to appear. There are no rules about how these words appear; the process is sometimes completely organic, sometimes slightly more deliberate, but regardless, there is no set formula for new words. These words can be completely original, come from established words in this or other languages, or come from morphemes (word parts with meaning) in this or other languages. All are valid and if you don’t like a new word, don’t use it, but you can’t tell anyone else that they are “wrong” for using a new word, especially if it’s a word that others are using too, but you personally don’t like.
And lastly, a reminder that the people who bitch and moan about X use of language being our downfall as a civilization and kids these days ruining our language are consistently on the wrong side of history, and that progress will march on uncaring of your delicate sensibilities, so kindly shut the fuck up and stop being a prescriptivist douchebag.
Inside the labyrinth walls There lies a tiny child who sleeps alone And as the daylight falls The wind becomes so wild across the stone For I have made her prison be Her every step away from me And this child I would destroy If you tried to set her free
You know what would be nice, American Media?
If you gave me books, movies, and TV shows where:
- more than one major character is female and these major female characters actually have a story arc that has fuck all to do with the male characters and heterosexual relationships
- there’s at least one major relationship between two women that isn’t sexual, doesn’t revolve around heterosexual desire and talk, and doesn’t take a fucking SUV backseat to a heterosexual relationship
- the female characters aren’t all stereotypically feminine or stereotypically heterosexual.
- the female characters who are more masculine or androgynous aren’t just the ones who are lesbian or queer.
- some female characters actually NEVER WANT TO GET MARRIED OR HAVE CHILDREN. AND NEVER DO. AND LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
- one or more female character(s) are asexual, aromantic, or both.
- the female characters have interests other than sex with men, romance with men, weddings with said men, having babies with men, raising those babies, and shopping.
- a woman whose most important relationship is a friendship with another woman. And their friendship is based on their love for each other, not 5000 conversations about their straight sex lives.
- women who actually love being single. And choose to be. Maybe even to the point where they reject the male characters’ romantic and/or sexual overtures. Even if they’re played by Ryan Gosling and Channing Tatum.
- women who are sexy without actually having a lot of sex. because they don’t want to have a lot of sex. despite the fact that they’re hot. despite the fact that they’re well-dressed. (Not all celibate/asexual/sexually apathetic women are ugly, awkward, poorly dressed, geeky, nerdy, sexually oblivious, bitchy, cold, annoying, repressed, virginal, childish, etc. Mind-blowing, I know.)
- women who are actually capable of going on an adventure or having a career without ending up in a romantic-sexual monogamous couple relationship with a man by the end of it.
- women who are not white, skinny, and stereotypically pretty with long hair and make-up and traditionally feminine clothing and habits and mannerisms.
I know you’re afraid that all the straight men won’t want to watch these TV shows and movies or read these books, but that’s okay. Who gives a fuck? Women are your majority audience at least half the time already anyway, even though you fucking blow at female characters.
I’d like to actually love a set of female characters as much as I love all the male characters of my favorites shows, movies, and books. I’d like to actually see a female character I can relate to. I’d like to get excited about a nonsexual relationship between two female characters.
It’s 2013. Get your ass in gear.

Spooky Ladies in History, Day 10
It’s ok to like problematic media. It’s ok not to be interested in analyzing the problems with the media you consume. It’s ok to refuse to participate in conversations about the problems with it.
What isn’t ok is being *aggressively* uninterested in its problematic nature. It’s not ok to suggest that people who care about the problem are doing something bad.
It’s not ok to say things like “don’t you have anything better to do?” to someone who is fed up because your favorite thing, for the 50th time, doesn’t include anyone who looks like her, and neither does anything remotely similar to it. Or because it uses a slur that breaks it for them.
And you have to respect the fact that the problematic things are dealbreakers for some people, and respect *that* boundary too. Because people are *allowed* to decide that certain types of attitudes are not welcome in their lives.
→ curled, pomaded, with laced waist, the hips of a woman, the bust of a prussian officer, the murmur of admiration from the boulevard wenches surrounding him, his cravat knowingly tied, a bludgeon in his pocket, a flower in his buttonhole; such was this dandy of the sepulchre.
