Notes are in complete agreement
modern Scheherazade reciting summaries of Internet drama to the king
“And that,” said Scherezade, “Is why the saga of Thanfiction is second in fame only to the story of the Snapewives on the astral plane in early 2000’s internet fandom drama.”
Freshly interested, the king rubbed his eyes, fighting the pull of sleep. “The what on the astral plane?”
Scherezade’s eyebrows shot up. “Have you never heard of the Snapewives? Much has been said of their marriage, most of it cruel, but the real story is far more interesting and complex than most remember.”
“You must tell me,” he demanded, and Scherezade knew that she had once again caught him on her hook. All that remained was to reel him in.
“My king,” she said, arching her back in a dramatic yawn, “I cannot; the hour is late, and I am far too tired to do it justice. I am sure I would forget important details, with my mind so clouded with sleep!”
The king chewed his lip, still fighting a battle he had lost many nights before. “Very well,” he said. “We will sleep, and you will tell me about it tomorrow when you are rested.”
Scherezade smiled a secret smile and closed her eyes, safe for another night, already planning how best to bait the king into asking about the story of hivliving.
After his first wife wrote a callout post about him, the king became wrathful and misogynistic; each night he would take a new wife only to cancel her in the morning. When all the unproblematic maidens of eligible birth had been cancelled, the vizier’s own only unproblematic daughter, Scherezade, stepped forward and agreed to marry the king herself.
She's going to get a solid week of nested stories out of explaining the A/B/O court case.

one of the deans in beijing dance academy rehearses with students
Oh so that's what books mean when they talk about seeing a swordperson or a martial artist move and immediately knowing you're fucked. If I saw someone handle a weapon or switch martial art stances that smoothly and with that economy of motion, I would immediately know I was going to die.
Oh, what a blast from the past! They're (and more importantly, he's) doing a type of Mongolian folk dance.
I recognize this track because my Chinese folk dance group used the same one when my teacher taught us a similar dance, ha ha. I haven't heard it in more than 15 years, but bam, there is is. We basically ripped the track from this master dance.
The dean here is Jiang Tiehong 姜铁红!
I think, I THINK here Jiang is at 3:00 in an older (1986 from the description) performance of this dance. In another video, somebody says that he and the four dancers immediately around him in white went on to become teachers at Minzu University of China, and I believe it, ha ha. He's also listed as a famous soloist for this dance and was a student of Minzu University of China, so I imagine he earned his solo then (and maybe this is one of those student performances!), and has been reprising it for fun anniversary performances and teaching moments like the one that went viral this year. I am cobbling this together without reading primary sources, so grain of salt.
(I have complicated feelings about "Chinese folk dance", the dance traditions of ethnic minority groups in China, and the Han-ification of them, but this performance objectively rocks. Also, the Minzu University of China is cooler than most because their education is focused on the ethnic minorities of China.)
This is Andrey X, a Jewish Israeli pro-Palestine activist.
I don't know how to describe this video so I'll just write out what he's saying:
That is the beginning of an Israeli settlement. And this is the Palestinian village of Umm al-Hiran. Which is right now under a demolition order, in order to expand the settlement that way.
And we are not in the West Bank. We are in the Naqab desert. Every single Palestinian in that village has an Israeli passport. And yet they're being expelled to make way for a Jewish settlement.
And look at the hills around us. This place is empty. If Israel wants to build a settlement, they can do it anywhere. And yet they choose to do it here. Because the only purpose of that settlement is to expel Palestinians from their land.
This is happen all over the Naqab desert. Currently 14 Palestinian Bedouin communities are under demolition orders. And thousands of people are set to become homeless.
This is the most blatant illustration that Israel is an ethno-nationalist apartheid state. The Palestinians of Umm al-Hiran have the exact same citizenship as the settlers who are about to move into their land. And yet the Palestinians are being ethnically cleansed just because they belong to an ethno-cultural group that the Israeli state wants to suppress as much as possible.
On stage at her show, black Brazilian singer and actress Ludmilla announced that she is expecting a 3-month-old baby with her wife Brunna Gonçalves. A beautiful moment, where he received support from fans and especially his family and his mother. it's important to talk about this, in Brazil, where it is one of the most homophobic and racist countries. Ludmilla, a beyhive who fulfilled her dream of meeting Beyoncé and is now Beyoncé's friend, fulfills another dream of being a mother with her wife, with the welcome that all women and black lesbian couples deserved.

congrats to them! i’m laughing at “expecting a three month old baby”
The fact that in Czech we legit say “the knife in my pocket is opening” when encoutering behavior we hate or find super annoying is something so memey

use, and i cannot stress this enough, thriftbooks
if thriftbooks doesn’t have what you’re looking for, especially if you’re looking for it used/cheap, alternatives include betterworldbooks and discoverbooks.
Other tips for cheaper books is checking amazon and scrolling down to the “buy used” or “other sellers” section and then checking to see if those sellers have storerfonts off of amazon.
There is also a good chance that you might have a local, indie book store that likely also has a used book section! Indiebound might help you find those book stores!
Also, check out your local library, sometimes, they have a for sale section or might have certain times of the year where they do massive used book (dvd, cd, etc) sales to fundraise!
(It’s also worth checking directly from an author’s or publisher’s page and seeing if they have other places they sell their books. I know this is about cheaper/used books, since some of y’all aren’t built for piracy or the library, but also if you want to dodge supporting amazon AND want to more directly support artists you support, there’s a good chance they might have alternate ways to buy the books!)
I use thriftbooks a lot, it's so good!
as someone who works in an independent bookstore, alibris is the best for supporting yr local bookstore! abebooks is now owned by amazon. thriftbooks is great also just doesn’t usually support independent stores.
when your art program’s closing message hits you straight in the heart and makes you stop and contemplate the state of it all
because of the huge response to this post, I decided to make a version of the art that includes the text
I’ve also uploaded this design to INPRNT, and all sales proceeds will be donated to environmental and humanitarian charities!

not really sure what else to say at this point. these opinions being platformed in the mainstream media is just so catastrophic for the way that people view minorities in this already extremely racist-by-nature country. gasoline on a bonfire.
Neither did white women or white men apparently and yet they never get the misogyny label applied to them wholesale. Seems exclusive to men of color.
the democrats really took for granted voters who had consistently supported them so they could try to court moderate republicans. arab americans and others on the left made specific asks (arms embargo, a palestinian speaker at the DNC) and dems refused, perhaps out of fear of alienating pro israeli voters who - forgive me for going out on a limb here - were not going to vote for harris regardless. The way dems and liberals are now mocking people who didn’t vote harris because of gaza is incredibly gross: whole families are getting wiped out by bombs sent by your administration and you feel entitled to ask their relatives to overlook that and vote for you anyway? Why didn’t they take the popular and moral position of an arms embargo and instead ask the pro israelis to not be single issue voters?
this pattern of moving the platform right to chase imaginary moderates while ignoring the demands of your base can be seen in so many other issues - don’t worry, we’ll keep fracking and building pipelines, we’ll have the most lethal military in the world. And that’s just the messaging. Dems took the same strategy with their governance, failing to prosecute january 6, failing to aggressively defend roe, failing to push court reform. And all for what, to build goodwill with people you’ve correctly identified as fascists? fucking stupid
when you fail to hold convictions for fear of alienating people who don’t share your stance, you are alienating people who do agree with you, who would’ve voted for you. trump knows the power of giving his base what they want; the thought of reaching across the aisle has never occurred to him. His win is a calamity, but the democrats definitely deserved to lose.
