Do you have any IRL whump friends?

Um...a better question would be do I have any irl friends at all 😂😭

Seriously, though, it’s pretty much just my family and one friend who lives in another state that I only occasionally talk to. I think I can safely say that my parents and sisters and that one friend are not into whump.

My daughters are, very much so on an almost concerning level if I had not been the same way at that age! I’ve linked to their whumpy adventures before, but here they are again. I don’t really talk to them about whump, though, lol, they don’t need encouragement!

My husband I explained the gist of whump to at one point - basically just “it’s favorite characters getting hurt” - and his response was something like, “Isn’t that...normal?” But I think he’s more on the typical media whump page, not the “I’m writing a story about someone being tortured for funsies” page. He’d probably be fine with that. But he tends to go more for comedy than angst.

TLDR, no, I don’t have any irl whump friends, which means I’m grateful for this community. And if it ever seems like I’m desperate for interaction...sorry, but I kinda am, whether it’s the whumpy variety or not! 😂

Who’s your favorite whumpee, or favorite traits in a whumpee?

Here I am sliding in at the last minute with today’s post.

In general, I’d say that my favorite guy whumpees have

1. A “bad boy” vibe

2. A tragic backstory

3. A tendency to hide their feelings

4. Long hair

Don’t ask me why on the last one. It’s just a trend I’ve noticed. In this vein my two favorite guy whumpees are Keith Kogane and Riku (KH). There’s also Elliot, from Leverage, who I’ve never personally whumped, but I like to see him whumped. Neil Caffrey (White Collar) is also a good one, and fits most of those.

If I’m creating OCs to whump, I’m definitely more drawn toward women. I don’t think I have as much criteria for them...? I do still like them to have

1. A tragic backstory

2. A tendency to hide their feelings

3. Nice hair

But I like stoic, defiant, broken, weepy, and everywhere in between. The best, for guys and girls, is when they start out as the first two and end up as the last two.

I don’t really have any favorite girl whumpees from media, but my favorites of my own are Meli and Liliana. Adelaide is a close second.

Share a snippet from something you’re working on.

I’ve already posted everything I’ve written for most of my WIPs. But here’s a snippet from a later chapter of “Black, Yellow, Blue, Green, Orange, Pink...Red”, and one from an untitled Kingdom Hearts AU fic that I haven’t actually worked on in a while.

“From what I heard, you were told to...to kill us, with the first shot. Right through the chest.”

The sound of a blaster going off echoes through his head, again and again, over and over as holes tear through cutouts of people whose faces he doesn’t know, can’t know, but then why does it feel like the holes are going through his own chest every time -

“But you didn’t.”

His breath catches at the reminder. “I f-failed my mission.”

Riku reached up to rub the back of his head, forgetting momentarily that it was covered with a hood. Dropping the arm back down awkwardly, he stuffed his hands into his pockets instead. “I didn't want you to have to carry that secret around. Not that I didn't trust you with it, just...if somebody asked you...about the missing money, for instance, or if rumor of the plan somehow got leaked, or...if something went wrong, like it did. I didn't want you to have to lie. I wanted you to genuinely be able to say that you didn't know anything.”

Something flashed in Sora's eyes, as his expression hardened even more and his jaw twitched with emotion. Finally he spun around and stalked back towards the bench. “Well, congratulations. It worked. I wasn't able to tell anybody your precious secrets when they asked.”

“I swear, this wasn't about trying to protect myself...” Riku halted mid-thought. He was missing something here. It itched at his brain, trying to claw its way to the surface. The way he said that last sentence... “They...they asked you about me. I mean, I figured they would, given our friendship, but...” His chest tightened. “What did they do?”

“I'm not talking to you about that!” Sora hissed through his teeth.

Brag about a creator or piece of whump you think is underrated.

Okay, so here’s the deal. There are certain things that appear in a LOT of fics that I don’t personally like. For instance, profanity and NSFW. Personally, I can still read some of those fics and just skip over certain parts and it doesn’t bother me, but I don’t like reblogging that kind of stuff because I don’t want to put an “I don’t approve of swearing, etc.” disclaimer on every one.

All of that to say, a. I’m sorry I don’t reblog your stuff very often, and this is the reason why, and b. I’m gonna shout out some people who are awesome writers today, with the understanding that I and you know their stories may contain those kinds of things.

Now that that’s out of the way!! I have no idea if these people are “underrated” but they are my friends and are great at what they do!

I was blown away to find out that @whumpopology is relatively new to writing, because she’s so good at it! Go read her series now so that you can get in on the sequel she’s starting! Fabulous male and female whump, found family team dynamics, and loads of angst.

@sableflynn is another fantastic lady whump writer. By flash and thunder fire was such a good read, and in what I’ve read so far of Out Unseen the characters and descriptions are phenomenal. Also she and whumpopology are writing a crossover fic between their characters, and it has me at the edge of my seat so far!

@whumpwillow has lots of great writing, including two series that I love, Hazeshift and Aeonian. If you like villain becomes the whumpee and immortal whumpees, this blog is the place to be!

@willadisastercry writes consistently good Voltron whump, especially for our baby boy Keith. Some of my favorites are here, here, and here.

She’s not on Tumblr, but I have to also shout out samsam4short. Her OC insert KH series, Eternal Flame, is so incredibly well written, the characters are amazing and there’s a ton of whump and angst.

There are so many other amazingly talented creators out there, I could go on, but these are the first ones that come to mind that should be far more popular than they are (even if they’re already semi-popular!).

Whumpmas in July Day 1

(Re)introduce yourself and/or your creations!

Hello, all! I’m Jada! 🙋🏻‍♀️

I’ve been writing since before I could actually spell (I recently found probably my very first story that I had dictated to my sister). I got into fanfiction about 3 years ago, then back into original fiction a couple of months ago.

I’ve pretty much always been into whump, though I only found the term for it recently. My sister and I used to whump our Barbies on a regular basis haha. It’s just always been a thing I liked - watching/reading about characters in peril, and thinking up the most tragic circumstances possible for my own characters. And now I have two kids who are the same way, somehow, even though I swear I haven’t influenced them! I post about their whumpy adventures sometimes.

I have a ton of writing available if you’re interested.

If you’re into Kingdom Hearts, I’ve got a few finished pieces and one ongoing OC insert series.

If you’re into Voltron: Legendary Defender, specifically whumping Keith, I have several finished pieces and one newly started series.
