A niche trope that I love:

Rescuer(s) burst into the cell/dungeon holding the captive team, utterly relieved, immediately getting to work freeing everyone until they look around and realize with a sinking feeling…

“Where’s Whumpee?”

And the rest of the team give each other wary, guilty looks - “They dragged them out on the first day. We haven’t seen them since.”

Your Top Three Trope of the Year!

Hi all, if you wouldn’t mind filling out this quiz/sharing it, that’d be great!

It is a list of 50+ whump tropes, and I would like to invite everyone inside and out of the whump community to select their top three from this year as part of a yearly roundup!

Don’t worry, this is anonymous and there is also a section for those ‘honourable mentions’ - tropes that didn’t make this list but have had a special place in your heart this year.

Happy whumping!

what's your favorite lady whump trope?

Avatar

Restraints.

Any kind, really. Muzzles are top tier. Also love gags, handcuffs, chains…rope is excellent because of the chafing and burns.

There are so many good ways to use them, too. Tie her to a chair. Hang her from the ceiling. Stress positions *chef’s kiss*. Even just a simple hands restrained behind the back is lovely but honestly the more tied up they are the better, imo. Hogtied, chained to a wall, I could go on and on but I won’t.

I don’t know for sure all the reasons I love it, but it definitely has to do both with the aesthetic and the utter helplessness. I really just love making my whumpees feel helpless in any way I can, especially if they’re used to being strong and independent.

Just saw your thing about squicks. When you say Lady whump, do you mean implied or past? Or like actual whump revolving around women?

Any situation in which a woman is physically hurt, whether past, present, or implied :) I’m fine with seeing women faint or collapse but definitely no hardcore torture

@actress4him enjoys lady whump if you’d like to send it her way though!

I know most of Willow’s followers probably have no idea who I am, but I am happy to ramble about lady whump tropes anytime! (or any other tropes, as long as they’re sfw and not eye gore)

I’m gonna take advantage of the free tags and post the one I made earlier without being tagged haha.

I’ve done one of these before, but I feel like this one had way more options! I…have a lot of faves. And loves. And actually surprisingly more nos than I thought I would, though there a few of those that I’d consider versions of.

Since I hopped on without being tagged I’m gonna extend it again to anyone who sees this and wants to join in!

So the question always seems to be do you prefer the whump or the comfort, but honestly the best part is when you’re right at the edge between the two… Like, give me the moment when the supporting characters are finally reunited but they still have to get the whumpee out and it’s gonna hurt. Give me the light little careful touches and soothing voices with a hint of barely concealed panic because the whumpee is too far gone to recognize them. The moment right  when someone comes up with some good painkillers, and normally the whumpee wouldn’t want anything strong but now he’s begging for them so you know it’s bad. Anyone else?

Off-topic TAT that I wish I saw more often:

Characters A and B are both injured. A’s injuries are actually worse (or soon become that way) but because of the nature of B’s injuries (they’re unconscious, can’t walk, etc) A is forced to carry/take care of B, ignoring their own pain until they collapse.

On of my favorite fics of all time has this. It’s in the MASH fandom of all places.

Obsessed with this today. I know I wrote it once with Keith and Lance, but I need to do it again sometime.

Hey I don’t think you’ve answered this yet, what are the reasons a character would couch up blood? I’m mostly asking about physical damage or illnesses. Thanks for your time!

  • Nosebleeds, if the blood goes down their throat
  • Prolonged severe cough
  • Chest or lung trauma
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Asthma
  • COPD
  • Cancer
  • Tuberculosis
  • Blood vessel problems
  • Foreign objects in the airways
  • Taking anticoagulants

Whumpmas in July Day 11

Who’s your favorite whumpee, or favorite traits in a whumpee?

.

Here I am sliding in at the last minute with today’s post.

In general, I’d say that my favorite guy whumpees have

1. A “bad boy” vibe

2. A tragic backstory

3. A tendency to hide their feelings

4. Long hair

Don’t ask me why on the last one. It’s just a trend I’ve noticed. In this vein my two favorite guy whumpees are Keith Kogane and Riku (KH). There’s also Elliot, from Leverage, who I’ve never personally whumped, but I like to see him whumped. Neil Caffrey (White Collar) is also a good one, and fits most of those.

If I’m creating OCs to whump, I’m definitely more drawn toward women. I don’t think I have as much criteria for them...? I do still like them to have

1. A tragic backstory

2. A tendency to hide their feelings

3. Nice hair

But I like stoic, defiant, broken, weepy, and everywhere in between. The best, for guys and girls, is when they start out as the first two and end up as the last two.

I don’t really have any favorite girl whumpees from media, but my favorites of my own are Meli and Liliana. Adelaide is a close second.

And that’s my two cents!

Whumpmas in July Day 5

What trope do you wish there was more content for?

.

Captivity whump that’s not pet whump

Team whump

Multiple whumpees

Battle injuries

Messy, non-linear recovery

Betrayal

Found family with no romance

.

There’s probably more, but that’s already 6 more than I was supposed to say, so I’ll stop there. 😊

Three distinct ways that a whumpee/team member might end up being led away from a situation where they surrender:

  1. They chose to go willingly, to spare others, but the hostage taker/whumper isn't going to make it easy for them to return to their side. They're walked out, free of restraints, as though happily in comradeship with the bad guys. They leave the premises to shocked gasps, looks of betrayal, and any attempt to get someone's attention or make it seem like they don't have a choice will result in someone else's injury or death. It's only once they're out of sight of everyone else that the cuffs and blindfold come out, and they're left all alone in the back of a vehicle, helpless, wondering if anyone even believes they're a victim too.
  2. They surrender but the enemy still makes it rough on them. Pushed harshly against a wall or floor until they're all scraped up and bruised, arms grabbed while they're manhandled and painfully restrained. None of it necessary except that it sends a nice message. They're beaten or cut up, and walked out staggering and bloody. Everyone else aware of what awaits them for giving themself up to spare others.
  3. They offer their arms willingly, perhaps even given the restraints to snap into place themself. They're loose enough to just be for show. They won't resist, there is no fighting. They are led away with their head held high, back straight, and just a cursory bit of distance to show they're choosing this fate... until they're unceremoniously pulled or pushed and stumble to their knees unable to catch themself. They get gracefully back to their feet but it's not before everyone has seen them so easily overpowered, showing who's really in control now.

I made a Whump Trope Tier list very poorly on my phone because one didn’t exist…

Show me how you rank these tropes! (I can add more choices if you’d like…)

Fun!

(My completed trope-ranking chart reads:

Whumperflies: ‘cuddling for comfort’; ‘field medicine’; ‘help bathing, eating/drinking, wound care, etc.’; ‘blood loss’; ‘broken bones’; ‘fever’; ‘collapsing’

Good Stuff ™: ‘hidden injury’; ‘hypothermia’; ‘fainting’; ‘gunshot wound’; ‘stab wound’; ‘bruised ribs’; ‘trouble breathing’

Meh: ‘heat stroke’; ‘self-sacrifice’; ‘concussion’

It Doesn’t Send Me: ‘nausea/vomiting’; ‘kidnapping’

Squick: ‘hospitalization’

This was nice :D

Personal hot takes tier list:

Whump feels ™: fainting, hidden injury, collapsing, help bathing, eating/drinking, wound care, etc, field medicine, cuddling for comfort

Good stuff: fever, broken bones, blood loss, bruised ribs

Alright, can do: stab wound, concussion, nausea/vomiting, trouble breathing

Not really my jam: Gunshot wounds, hypothermia, heat stroke

Squick: kidnapping, hospitalization, self sacrifice

This was fun!

“HELL yes” tier: Gunshot wound, stab wound, broken bones, bruised ribs, blood loss, collapsing, self sacrifice, cuddling for comfort, help bathing/eating/drinking/ wound care etc.

“Nice, nice” tier: Fainting, concussion, field medicine, kidnapping

“Sure” tier: Hypothermia, heat stroke, hidden injury, trouble breathing, fever

“Better than nothing” tier: Hospitalisation

“No thank you” tier: Nausea/vomitting (there is some leeway there though tbh)

Nice idea!! Here’s mine:

Yesssss: Gunshot wounds, hidden injury, kidnapping, collapsing, stab wound, blood loss, bruised ribs, trouble breathing, broken bones, self-sacrifice

Mm-hm: Fever, cuddling for comfort, field medicine

It’s alright: Fainting, hypothermia, heat stroke, concussion

Meh: hospitalization, help bathing, eating/drinking, wound care, etc.

No thanks: nausea/vomiting

Ok but what about my favorite part of the whump genre... the c o m f o r t

:)

Even though I’ve gotten pretty good at/used to writing drabbles with no comfort over the course of Whumptober and Whumpay, I don’t really like to read stories that don’t have at least some comfort at the end. However, if the fluff goes on for too long I get bored haha. My ideal plot would be...lots of whump and angst, some recovery and more angst with tiny moments of fluff in between, and a short little bit of fluff at the end to wrap it all up.

For the trope game: drowning

:)

It's not my absolute favorite, and I don't think I really know how to write it all that well...? But I have seen it done well by other people. I think certain drowning scenarios work better for me than others. For instance, a whumper holding the whumpee's head under water, or a whumpee falling through ice...those are good!
