The Cabin by the woods

The sounds of clips, clops and clammer fill the air. Every presence on the street speedily moves towards its edges, paving the way for the approaching entourage to pass. Your heart skips a beat when you hear two women whispering to each other that Prince Levi is on his royal tour of the town today.

Has it finally been a week? Took long enough.

You catch your reflection in the glass of a window, carding your fingers through your hair to quickly fix it the best you can. You tidy your shirt and straighten your skirt, knowing all too well how particular the prince is about neatness. Facing the street again, you watch the entourage pass. Guards dressed in heavy, shining armor, each yielding sword, occasionally wave to the many excited children squealing in delight.

The dishes were done and put away, the floors were mopped, counters were clean, and the door, locked. Levi breathed a sigh of relief, perusing his quaint and charming tea shop that now lay empty after bustling with crowds all day. His very own. He couldn't help breaking into a small smile at that thought.

"Care to make me a cup of tea?", a voice startled him right as he was about to switch the lights off and turn in for the night.

"We're closed, Four Eyes.", he deadpanned, spotting his former commander sitting by the counter. "Besides, what are you still doing here?"

Of Stolen Glances and Veiled Smiles

Levi breathes in a lungful of air, scanning the empty café as he carefully climbs down the creaky stairs. Gentle rays of the sun trickle in through the tall clear windows, manifesting a seraphic path before uniting with the dark, hardwood floors and blanketing it in a honeyed glow. They paint the timber slats in their light, except where they are obstructed by the name of the café that has been hand painted on the glass.

'Kutchel's Cafe', he admires the shadow of the cursive.

"Good morning, Maa.", he wishes quietly, carefully steering himself to avoid stepping on her name.

Their own little way of greeting each other every morning.

Northern Lights

Levi wrapped his arm around you, tugging the blanket tight. “Is this okay?”

You nodded, the action giving you a slight headache. You always knew you would die young. This disease you have, the life expectancy isn’t a long one. Doctors were surprised you made it as far as you did, congratulating you at every visit.

That made you feel even more sick whilst the irony of it made you laugh. You grew accustomed to the idea of leaving this earth early but that all changed when you met him.

Levi wakes up at the crack of dawn, ready to get cracking on the plan that has been brewing in his mind for weeks. You squirm when he unclasps himself from your hold, mumbling something he can’t understand.

You wake up disappointed when you stretch your arm just to feel the cold and empty right side of the bed. You turn on your back and groan. The bed is so comfortable and the thought of getting out of bed is the last thing you want to do.

Then it hits you, reality finally getting through the morning haziness. It’s your birthday. Your eyes snap open, excitement bubbling in you. You took the day off just for that: to have time for you. Levi also took the day off, knowing you would have called in for him if he didn’t. It saved him the embarrassment.
