Hey, I was wondering if you had any favorite low-key whump. Whump that's kinda minor, maybe not even the focus of a scene.

I love me some major whump but sometimes I find the little stuff can be quite delightful too!

Not gonna lie, low key whump is like my FAVORITE thing. I love small moments of whump. Hand touches, bruises, winces, cuts, one lone tear, flinching, holding their ribs, bandages, holding an ice pack to their face, being covered with a blanket, headaches, etc. LOVE THAT SHIT! There's some more good examples under this tag too: https://aceofwhump.tumblr.com/tagged/small%20moments%20of%20whump

Do you have a favorite small moment of whump? Like rather than a whole big scene something really small and fleeting, i.e. a micro expression, a grimace in the background, a minor wince, etc.

Oh man nonny small moments of whump is one of my favorite aspects of whump. I have so many I adore. The big stuff is fun but when it comes down to it, it's the small aspects that tend to give me those whumperflies. Here are some of my absolute favorite small moments of whump:

  1. When the character is feeling faint and they sway just a little bit before collapsing to their knees
  2. Flinching. Nothing better than a flinch. I love the big full body flinching but even the really small ones that you can just barely notice give me whumperflies
  3. Fevers. Everything about fevers is wonderful. The light blush on their cheeks, laying a hand on their forehead, the heavy breathing, the little moans. Ugh i love it so much
  4. Bruises. Especially like one on the jaw from a punch to the face
  5. When a character has a headache and they close their eyes and they get that little crinkle of pain between their brows
  6. Shaky hands! Either from fear, cold, illness, etc A little tremor in the hands is so good.
  7. Tears!! Come on you can't beat tears!
  8. An arm slung over the shoulder of a caretaker in a support/carried kind of way
  9. Applying a bandage to a wound. My favorite is when it's a hand injury.
  10. Running their hands through the whumpee's hair when they're unconscious/sleeping. If that happens I DIE
  11. Being covered with a blanket when they've passed out on the couch or something
  12. Coughing. Especially anime sick episode coughing.
  13. Hugging!! Hugging is ALWAYS good!
  14. Scar reveals!

Little moments of whump

Grand whump is wonderful, of course, but what takes my breath are those subtle moments that show the whumped character is really not ok:

- taking a moment to close his eyes because he’s light headed/exhausted/has such a bad headache

- pressing the heel of his hand against his temple, because his head hurts or he can feel his temperature rising

- spacing out a bit during a conversation - especially when he’s the one speaking, so that he kind of trails off and has to shake himself and apologise and get back on track

- pressing a cold bottle of beer/coke against his forehead and just taking a moment to savour the relief

- especially a normally diligent/stoic character - falling asleep on the job or somewhere he shouldn’t, even if it’s just for a moment, and he’s startled awake by someone/something and there’s just that moment of being lost in his eyes as he tries to figure out where he is and what’s happened

- his hands are shaking and he accidentally meets someone’s eyes who’s seen it happen so he shoves his hands into his pockets or armpits and stalks off

- a little stagger as he walks, or kind of drunkenly reeling off-course a tiny bit before he self-corrects

- that helpless expression just before he collapses

- moving wrong in a way that aggravates the pain, and the sudden seizing of his body

- breathing through the pain

- leaning against objects so he can stay upright, especially if he’s doing it as nonchalantly as possible

- a pause as he first notices that something isn’t right

- that white knuckled grip

- a hitch in his voice as he talks

- half-lidded eyes that are becoming unfocussed

- the way his head lolls

- where he can’t even spare the energy/strength to turn his head and he kind of just accepts things/carries on looking straight ahead

- trying to carry on speaking a command or direction or explanation even though he can only voice a few words at a time, either because of pain, or weakness, or confusion/disorientation

- someone passes him something but his hands are clumsy and he fumbles with it rather than just taking it normally

- reaching under a jacket and coming out with a blood-stained hand (always this <3)

- apologising for being about to pass out just before he does (afhflksdkkjfgg)

My favorite Small Moment of Whump is when a canon doesn't forget about continuity for its previously hurt characters- that little limp/hitch in the step of someone with an old leg injury, the way they wince when they shift or sit after a beating, the way hands tremble when faced with a previously painful situation, the slight flinch when someone accidentally suddenly invades their space...

I think all of us would appreciate more of this from canon!
