Could you share some less common illnesses to use? The prompts keep making me think of cold/flu, which is great, but I don't want to write it all about that. I try to use different things, but I'm stuck in a rut, and I like variety in the sickfics I read and write. My main go-to is chicken pox, and I want to use mumps and meningitis at some point.

We can definitely see how many of the prompts could be interpreted as cold or flu related. And we certainly understand your desire to try something new!

But we also feel like the 'more cake' analogy is worth repeating. There are so many symptoms, scenarios, treatments, home remedies and 'old wives tales' that there is an endless supply of new ways to reinvent any trope! And one great fic definitely deserves another... and another... and another...

That being said, we've put together a list of illnesses/additional symptoms. How you can potentially work them into the various prompts is up to you! But goodness knows, any of them could lead to a few sleepless nights (Prompt 27) Anyway, we hope this helps!!

Acute Pancreatitis is the prolonged inflammation of the pancreas. Acute Pancreatitis usually appears suddenly and lasts for several days. Although some people may develop chronic pancreatitis, which can last for years. Causes include but are not limited to, infection, alcoholism, certain medications, gallstones, trauma and obesity. Treatment may involve a change in diet, IV fluids, pain medication or in some cases surgery to remove bile duct blockages, the gallbladder or infected pancreatic tissue.

Symptoms include: Upper abdominal pain, abdominal pain that radiates to the back, abdominal tenderness, fever, rapid pulse, nausea and vomiting.

Norovirus is one of the most common causes of vomiting and diarrhea. In some places it's also referred to as the 'winter vomiting bug' because it's more common in winter, although you can catch it at any time of the year. It usually takes a few days to recover.

Oral Thrush or Oral Candidosis is a fungal (Yeast) infection of the mouth. It isn't contagious and can be treated fairly successfully with antifungal medications. It can be caused by the use of certain antibiotics, poor oral hygiene, smoking or the use of steroid inhalers used for asthma.

Symptoms include: White or red patches inside the mouth, lose of taste, general redness in the mouth and throat, pain and burning within the mouth that can sometimes make eating and drinking difficult.If let untreated, Oral Thrush can become much more serious.

Cellulitis is an infection within the deeper layers of the skin. It can often be treated with antibiotics. Although more problematic cases can lead to hospitalization. If it’s not retreated properly it can become extremely serious. Cellulitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection that enters the skin via a cut or scrape.

Some sickfic fans: Here's a fic where my favourite character catches a cold from going out in the rain

Me: Ok but what if their friends go to check on them and find them suddenly burning with fever and barely conscious and it turns out they'd been hiding a much more severe illness beforehand and the rain only amplified it and now they're delirious and can't breathe properly and are plagued with horrible nightmares and hallucinations but their friends can't get medical supplies for whatever reason so they stay with them day and night worried sick telling them to keep breathing and coaxing them to eat knowing they need rest but worrying any time they close their eyes because they're afraid they might not wake up again and -

I LOVE the element of guilt in sickfics and whump fics.

For example:

Character A is having a bad day and snaps at character B, even though B hasn’t don’t anything to deserve it. B leaves, shaken and upset, and while they’re on their own, something bad happens to them. When A finds out, A runs to see B, panicked out of their mind, wracked with guilt, thinking this is my fault since they never would have left if it wasn’t for me and oh my god how could I have been so cruel to them, they were only trying to help etc…
Character A accuses character B of being dramatic, and brushes off their attempts at saying how ill they’re feeling, or how much their wound hurts, until they get way worse, maybe collapse. And character A is like fUCK THEY’VE BEEN TRYING TO TELL ME ALL DAY AND I IGNORED THEM
Character A is always aloof, or maybe even antagonistic towards character B, but not because they don’t care about character B - they just have trouble expressing their emotions, or are afraid of letting people in. When character A has to take care of character B when B is hurt/ill, B is vulnerable and confused, asking “I didn’t know you cared about me?? To be honest I kind of thought you hated me?” And A is just punched in the chest with the horrible realization that B doesn’t think they care and hjhfhhhh.
A character sometimes gets ignored or brushed aside in their friend group or family. Even though they’ve been showing obvious signs that something was wrong, no-one noticed, and everyone is shocked and horrified when they finally realize.
Similar to that:
A character sees them-self as a burden on their friends or family, so don’t tell anyone what’s wrong with them even as it gets much worse. When the others find out and are like??? Why didn’t you say something??? The character accidentally lets slip their insecurities (something like “i don’t matter”) and the others are just so heartbroken that theyve done something to make them feel like that.

And there’s so many more that i can’t remember right now! It’s just awesome.

Guilty!fics are just the perfect recipe for added whump, mega-comfort and some very emotional conversations!

I love like… slow burn sickfics. when you know a character is getting sick but it’s not super obvious and comes on reeeal slow. every once in a while it’ll mention a cough or a headache or gradually progressing dizziness, but it’s understated and no one, including the character, thinks much of it. until you reach the point where it starts getting really bad and the character just crumples in front of everyone

domestic things I particularly love in sickfics

pressing a hand to their forehead to check if they have a temperature
pressing the back of their fingers to their cheek to check if they have a temperature
cuddles + hair stroking
even though it’s technically not a scientifically sound thing, characters getting sick from not wearing enough layers or getting caught in the rain
along those lines, one of the character’s who’s soaked through or shivering starts to sneeze a couple times, and their s/o just panicking a little and starting to fuss over them, wrapping them up in blankets and sitting them down in front of the fire and monitoring them to see if they’re symptoms get worse
the character being so sick and out of it that they can’t walk by themselves, and they have to be supported or carried
the character just looking like the poster of a sick person - pale face, flushed cheeks, bags under their eyes, blankets wrapped up to their neck, and a thermometer under their tongue
the sickie insisting that their s/o goes to work but the s/o refuses to leave their side
anxious hovering caretakers
the sickie having a coughing fit so hard that they sway and almost fall over and their friend/family member/partner has to steady them
the sickie waking up from a feverish sleep, expecting their s/o to be gone, only to find them asleep on a chair at their bedside
