best trope is the one where the character’s godlike power is also killing them btw. they don’t even lift a hand to kill the monster but now they’re delirious with fever. they save a friend’s life and said friend immediately finds them emergency medical care. they raze the enemy to nothing and it takes far too long to find their pulse with all the bruising. their friends just constantly having to patch them up and worrying over which feat will be their last. et cetera
Look man the hottest thing a person can do is cry
feeling particularly feral about caretakers watching over absolutely exhausted, sleeping whumpees
“hold them down”
no easy way to do this, in the wind-wracked early morning just over the hill from the messy remnants of a battlefield. their strangled sobs of pain had given way to exhausted gasps now, wincing still as the arrow shaft lodged between their ribs moved with each ragged breath.
their friend cradled their head, let their hands clench tightly on his, holding on white-knuckled in desperation.
“we’re going to have to get the arrowhead out. we’ll be as quick as we can - ”
no answer in words, only their eyes staring upward, wide with pain and shock and impossibly trusting in extremity.
“hold them down.” the medic leaned closer, thin knife in one hand, a wad of bandages in the other. “you’ll have to help me here, all right?”
their friend’s jaw tightened, and he nodded, wordless as well.
it took too much breath for them to scream properly, but none at all to faint several endless moments later, their frantic struggles slipping abruptly into limp stillness. their friend leaned over, letting out their own breath in a sigh of desperate relief, and pressed his lips to their sweat-soaked forehead.
“it’s all right, it’s all right. we’re done now.”
Anyone else a big fan of the after-adrenaline shakes where a character starts to process what they just went through and they b r e a k and it's delicious...
Knowing that there’s inevitable pain or sickness coming, and being unable to do anything to ward it off. Particularly when the character has a mission they need to complete despite the pain (and they pull it off like a BAMF before finally allowing themselves to succumb)
