On September 12, 1997 Daniel Jackson died for the first time (in the show lol) leading to a fanbase coining the term "whump" to describe their favorite archaeologist in pain.
Today our community has grown and expanded so much and I'm so happy to be a part of it!

September 12 is International Whump Day!!
It's a Tumblr community chosen and celebrated holiday so Google wouldn't know about it. The date was chosen because it's the airdate of the episode when Daniel Jackson has his first death in Stargate SG-1 (that would be "The Nox").
It has been suggested that the Whump Community adopt September 12 as the official International Whump Day.
This day was chosen in honor of Daniel Jackson’s first official “death” as a member of SG-1 on the Stargate TV show. As some of you may know, the prevailing theory is that the term Whump was coined in the early days of the Stargate fandom to describe the common practice of putting poor Danial through the ringer :)
I hope you will all join us in celebrating the day and spreading the word! Thanks to @the-whumpy-fangirl for the fantastic idea!
In other news, The Whumpapedia has made it onto the Fanlore website! Pretty exciting!

In 2018, Tumblr user @the-whumpy-fangirl suggested celebrating an International Whump Day, proposing September 12th as the first of Daniel’s many deaths. This International Whump Day, we asked long-time whumper and fanfic librarian Ace to help us celebrate by recommending us fifteen of her favorite Daniel Jackson whump fics.

We chose this day in honor of the air date of Daniel Jackson's first death on Stargate SG-1 and since the term Whump originated in that fandom for him.

Once upon a time, on a whump discord server far, far away, a handful of whump community members got together and came up with an idea.
What if we had an International Day of Whump? I mean, if donuts can have one, why can’t we, right??
And thus September 12th was chosen as it was on this day in 1997 that the Stargate: SG1 character of Daniel Jackson had his first on air death. Why is this relevant, you might ask? Well it’s because fanlore tells us the term “whump” was first coined by fans of Daniel h/c stories. Since the term has its origins with this character, why not celebrate it on the day when the first of his many deaths occurred!?
I had planned a lot more fanfare for today, a whole week of celebration, actually, but real life and my health have unfortunately forced me to condense it down into one post on the day. Next year we’ll do it right, but for today I was hoping you all might take a moment to reblog this post, maybe add the day to your calendar, and then tell me a little bit about how you first discovered whump and what it, and this community, means to you. You can add a comment, reblog, or send me an ask. I’ll tag all things related to the day with “International Whump Day” if you want to avoid spam.
Whump unites us all and it’s only fitting we should have a day to celebrate it. I hope you’ll join me.
