I love when the cocky, confident character is secretly ashamed of their scars, like the remains of their past wounds turn their bodies into something ugly and unloveable.

The only thing I love more is when their friends or loved ones help them see otherwise.

But can we not apply these thoughtful words to our own community? When new members stumble upon us, they often come to us with a secret sense of shame for loving such a problematic thing as this. But we always open our arms them, determined to help them realize that they are not wrong, they are not damaged and they are certainly not alone.

Scars were nothing new to him.

He could probably recall how he got each and every one, and there were times he had done just that for Noctis, when he was tired and uncharacteristically affectionate. He’d trace Gladio’s marred skin, and ask for the stories behind them, until he’d been lulled to sleep by twisted but comical fairytales.

Because Gladio lied, of course. Every time. He’d explain the scars away through wild chocobo attacks, or dramatically falling somewhere, or attacking himself with his own spear. 

The truth - that almost all of them were from the enemies he’d dedicated his life to protecting Noct from - was ugly, just like them.

I love this episode SO MUCH! One of my absolute favorite fics of all time is based on this scene. It’s called There Loomed an Ogre by Iantalia and it really explores the aftereffects of Tony’s kidnapping, his insecurities about his place on the team and his past and his abandonment issues. I love it so much. You should all read it.

what are your favourite kinds of emotional whump?

Insecurity is my favorite kind of emotional whump. I love when the whumpee feels insecure in their place in the team, or at their job, or when they’ve been beaten down so bad they feel insecure about their place in the life period. It leads to lots anxiety and fear in the whumpee which then leads to a lot of good comfort and reassurances from the caretaker after the whumpees inevitable breakdown.

Character A has been held for so long that they start thinking the team has given up trying to find them or that they just haven’t bothered - A then doubts their place on the team. When they are rescued they start babbling these ideas through a fever induced delirium and the other characters have to comfort them and apologize for taking so long. 

Oh man that’s great, I love it. I hope you’re okay with me adding an alternative:

A having been gone so long that their team was forced to have someone (B) fill in for them. After their rescue, when they’re (somewhat) back on their feet but not yet cleared for work, they see how well the team works with B in it.

Because of already existing insecurities or because of what the capturer told A to mess with them, they start questioning their use to the team and having moments of ‘B could’ve done this better/quicker/smarter than me’ when they’re back in their old position.

Bonus if the capturer gets their hands on B and A decides to take their place - willingly walking back into the hell they just escaped because they guinely think it’s best for their team, that they’d be safer with someone more capable on their team instead.
