Merlin (BBC) 4x06 - Merlin is woken up with a splash of cold water to find himself chained up, a captive of Morgana.
Drake x Morwenna, Poldark 4x01
Held Underwater: Your beloved character is bound hand and foot - a heavy weight attached to their ankles and the knowledge they are about to be shoved into a deep lake, ocean, or even a well. The water hasn’t even touched them yet but how can they think of holding their breath when they can’t stop panting in fear?
Hangman: Don’t see this one as much and with probably good reason as even ACTING a scene like this can be nearly fatal! (Brendan Fraser hung for real when the noose was tightened too far and he blacked out!). However, there is a real deep horror for your character if they have this threat… hanging over them (not sorry). If the drop doesn’t snap their neck they get to dangle, helpless, while they gasp uselessly and desperately try no to kick their legs. Made so much worse if they have a tormentor that keeps raising and lowering them - keeping them just on the edge of death.
Garrotte: Whether piano wire, cord, or some other implement, this is one of my favorite whumpy strangulation methods! It’s painful and terrifying but not immediately fatal so the victim continues to fight and struggle. If the weapon is wire or cord it has the added aspect of cutting into the flesh and causing further painful damage.
Manual Suffocation: My other favorite variety! Either by hands on the nose and mouth or clamped around the throat there’s a horrid intimacy to this sort of whump - so terribly personal and it takes a special kind of psychopath to kill someone this way. They can feel movements of struggle; like swallowing and mouth moving; the body bucking to escape; feet digging and kicking; hands clawing at their fingers.
Compression: This particular torture has a brutality in that it can take a long time. Maybe the character is buried up to the neck in sand - maybe a giant snake is wrapped around their chest and starting to squeeze - either way they will have plenty of time to feel each breath grow shallower and shallower - hear bones begin to creak… then snap… as the haze of black begins to fill their eyes.
