Ace, I'm so annoyed!!! I finished reading The Reviver last month and was planning on reading Lost Souls next month and.. this damn book is not available anywhere! I can only find a handful of secondhand copies online that appear to be in poor condition or from America so high postage costs since I'm in the UK. Not available in my local library. And there's no available ebook either! This is just cruel. I adore Jonah so much and I need more of him and his found family.

Ahh oh my god that's so frustrating!!! Lost Souls is so good too. I love that you enjoyed Reviver and love Jonah as much as I do!!! That makes me so happy. Nonny if you wanted to direct message me privately I may or may not have a pdf or an epub of Lost Souls I could send you. I have to look at my library but I'm fairly certain I've got it.

OMG darling ACE!

It took me nearly 6 months but I finally finished A breath of snow and ashes! I'm very proud of myself ! I attempted once before and gave up after about 20% so this feels like a massive accomplishment.

Anyway now I'm free from that chonker of a book, I'm trying to decide whether to read the next Reviver book (2) or to finally start the murderbot series 🤔 ! I also have several marvel graphic novels I haven't had a chance to read yet.

Help me decide, Ace! I'm so indecisive 😭!

That is amazing!!!! Congrats!!! It is no easy feat to finish ABOSAA!! Well done!!

Oh my gosh both choices are SO GOOD and I want you to read them both! I'm going to say read Lost Souls (the next Reviver book) and then the Murderbot series. Mostly cause once you start reading the Murderbot books you'll want to read them all immediately. So read the one Reviver book and then go devour the Murderbot series like I am right now lol. One more book to go! Then come tell me what you thought about them all!!!!

I might have gotten the rec here to begin with but bookrec!!!! for Winter be my Shield

The prologue sees a character kidnapped, I’m about halfway through and he’s still recovering. Everyone is protective, he’s stubborn, they’re on some sort of Trek through Winter so they worry about him while he constantly tries to do Too Much, while also feeling like a burden (tw for repeated suicidal thoughts/depression though)

A few points where the descriptive gore got a bit much (there are mages that feed on pain) but (so far) a little romance but no smut!

Oooh sounds good! I think someone has rec'd that before. The title sounds familiar. But damn that whump sounds super good!!! Thanks for sharing! I'm gonna have to look into it. Also mages that feed on pain sounds like an AMAZING whump trope 👀 And Yay no smut!!! Perfect!!

Hi there Ace!

I'm participating in a bingo reading challenge and one of the squares is to read a book that has been recommended to you by somebody else. I don't really know many people that read irl and those that do have very different tastes to my own so I was wondering if you had anything whumpy to rec? :) x

Oh how fun! Yeah I can give you something to read. My number one rec for you to read is Reviver by Seth Patrick.

Reviver is a paranormal/horror/crime solving/action adventure about a guy named Jonah Miller who is a Forensic Reviver. Revivers are people who have the ability to bring the dead back to life temporarily. Some of these people who with the police to help solve murders and suspicious deaths and to get any last messages for their loved ones and Jonah is one of the absolute best at it. The book is soooo full of whump. Jonah feels sick every time he does a revival, he passes out several times. I highly recommend it!

But on the off chance you've already read it, here are some others I'll rec as well: Outlander, Fourth Wing, The Murderbot Diaries, The Lies of Locke Lamora, and The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

Hi! Saying minimal things to avoid spoilers:

Forestborn:

A magical illness is spreading, the youngest prince (who everyone loves) gets it, so two people (with magic, which makes them persecuted by certain people) set out to retrieve a cure, they’re forced to bring along the prickly older prince.

Wildbound: I mean the sequel lol - the kingdoms are at war. Basically there is a lot of h/c (in both) for like everybody, lots of found family, trope city, angst, and only one very vague very skippable euphemistic sexual scene in Wildbound. There is some romance but it’s (imo) mild, and tempered/balanced by the found family of it all.

Mains are supposedly 16-25 I think? But you also don’t know for some because /they/ don’t know (they lived in the forest and lost track 🤷‍♀️). YA for sure, but maybe only 1-2 eyerolls of a possible 10 (and one is for that scene in Wildbound, which I would skip for multiple reasons and which imo contributes nothing to the plot. I am possible biased as a sex repulsed ace who thinks no sex scene ever has contributed to put but)

I think the writing is better in Wildbound than Forestborn (the first book sometimes I question tenses? But don’t know enough to say for sure, just sometimes feels weird), but it’s overall decent.

Basically a rec that is heavily based on the tropes which were 10/10 lol

sounds good!! Thanks for the summaries and rec!! I appreciate that! I'll keep it in mind for my next new book hunt :D

I finished the first book of the Murderbot Diaries and I'M DYING!!!!

Spoilers below for the first book, All Systems Red!

First of all, Murderbot's whole personality is so relatable I died. Obsessed with media and one specific TV show? Skips through the sex scenes because they're boring and finds sex in general boring?! Doesn't like when humans look at it so it either stands in a corner of a room facing the wall or wears it's armor and opaque helmet? Human emotions overwhelm, confuse, or downright annoy it? Doesn't want to care about the lives of humans but finds itself inexplicably worried and protective towards IT'S humans? I AM IN LOVE!!!!

And the whump!?!?! AAHHHH!!! When a book starts out with whump I am all in lol. We got it losing parts of itself, losing tons of blood, collapsing and shutting down, the trauma of its past (being forced to do things against its will, being treated as an object, a piece of property), the punishments administered by the governor module when it won't comply with an order, the many times it gets shot and attacked, the anxiety it feels when humans interact or look at it. Fuck I love everything about Murderbot whump!!!!

Also I definitely started crying at the end when Murderbot woke up after nearly being killed saving Mensah and Ratthi was there waiting and was so happy to say "Hi new best friend! We bought your contract! You can come home with us and be free from the company and do whatever what you want!!"

THE FOUND FAMILY FEELS I AM FEELING ARE STRONG! THEY LIKE MURDERBOT! IT IS THEIR FRIEND! THEY REFUSED TO LEAVE IT BEHIND WHEN IT WAS HURT! HELP ME!

EXCUSE ME I NEED TO GO FIND BOOK 2 IMMEDIATELY KAY THANKS!

I did in fact finish it! I'm a slow reader so it took me a full month but I did really enjoy it 😊! You weren't kidding when you said the whump was good! I'm not one to write in my books but I was extremely tempted because there were so many incredible whumpy quotes I wanted to highlight (I ended up having to jot down page numbers for future reference because I couldn't find an ebook available anywhere). I particularly adored Jonah!  I mean he has a cat called Marmite and a sad backstory so I was going to love him regardless but I also found his rather introverted ass so relatable. It would make a great show. Anyway hope you have a great week!

Ahhh yay!!! Oh I'm so glad you enjoyed reading Reviver!!!! That makes me so happy! Jonah is the best isn't he! Sad back story? Cat lover? Painful power? Introvert? That like my recipe for a favorite whumpee lol! Oh man yeah it would make a fantastic tv show. Even a miniseries. It'd be PERFECT. Ah I'm so happy you enjoyed it. The whump is just so good but the plot is also so intriguing and I loved following the mystery of it all. And all the characters were great. I loved his friendship with Never so much. This book is just so good and I'm so glad you read it and liked it. I hope you enjoy reading book 2 as well!!

Hi! Do you know if there’s any whump in Fourth Wing? (And if so, super vaguely which character)

Thanks!!!

YES!! OMG nonny you've chosen like the only book I've read so far this year lol. And yes there is tons of whump!!!! I won't get into which character(s) but oof I want to. I want to nonny. So if you decide to read it and need to talk COME ON BACK! I have many Fourth Wing thoughts lol.

But yes it is whumpy!! Lots of good whumpy tropes to be found in it!

Do you read YA a lot? I’m 31, but as a sex-repulsed ace, I realized that while I would /love/ to read about people closer to my age (idunno maybe like 25-35), teen/YA is usually safer from sexual content…

Where are the sex-free whumpy found-family fantasy books about adults???

I do on occasion read YA but not very often anymore as I definitely prefer protags closer to my age and romance books aren't my favorite and I feel like most YA books focus way too much on love triangles and romance.

Oh my god I would LOVE some whumpy, sex/romance free, found family fantasy books for adult!! I WOULD LOVE THAT WITH MY WHOLE BEING!! Those kinds of stories are so hard to find!!!!

If anyone has recs please share!!

HIIII

I’m currently not watching anything new, but AM going through a book phase??? (Haven’t finished a book in years, so thank you audiobooks and also probably Vyvanse?) Also I’m pretty sure some came from a rec post here???

I’d say that all of these books have:

- a focus on found family (!!!!)

- an angsty/whumpable male main character

- some hurt/comfort for said mc

- fantasy/magic with (imo) good world building

and are NOT driven by romance (anything that is there is side-plot), and do not include graphic sexual content (or, at least, it was insignificant enough for me to ignore it - same goes for the listed tropes, really - I was able to read with my fav trope blinders on, which doesn’t mean other stuff wasn’t there, but I can’t say that for every book)

1. Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom (Kaz)

2. A Darker Shade of Magic/A Gathering of Shadows (Kell)

3. Dark Rise/Dark Heir (Will)

4. Sword Catcher (Kel)

(Why do they all have single syllable names mostly starting with K and ending with L?)

ANYWAY highly recommend (in order, from 1-4), and would love to know if you (or any followers) have recs for fic (of the above) OR other books that check the boxes (esp if heavy on the comfort!!)

THANKS!

BLESS YOU!!!! I love getting book recs especially fantasy books with little sex/romance!!! That's super rare nowadays so I thank you! I recently finished reading both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame and loved them both (despite them being very romance heavy I found that I didn't mind it at all and really enjoyed the world and the story) and now I'm eager for some more fantasy books to read. Thank you for the recs!! I'll go give them a look!

I have posted some Kaz whump fic recs in the past so I recommend you check out my Shadow and Bone tag for those. If anyone has fic recs for the others on the list please reply with your favs!!

As for other recs may I offer a few of my favorites? The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, The Ranger Apprentice books by John Flanagan, The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke.

Books: Whump Edition

first of all, holy heck… the response to my / anon’s request for whumpy books has been amazing (not to mention a little overwhelming)! thank you all for your suggestions; i can’t wait to read all these. ;) let’s get to it, shall we?

  1. Dick Francis books : “Dick Francis’s books are all wonderfully whumpy. They are murder mysteries set around the British horseracing world (Francis was a jockey before he became a writer) and despite being a bit formulaic they are wonderfully well written and fun to read. If I had to recommend one to start with, I’d say “Odds Against (Sid Halley #1)”, as it is the first of the Sid Halley books and he is my favourite Dick Francis character.” // submitted by @nemo-forever and @alipeeps
  2. The Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen :  “The first book has some nice whump (the main character gets whipped and then is taken care of in a dungeon cell), and the second book has such good whump that I just open it sometimes and read the whumpy part when I need some good whump. (It involves a broken leg, climbing a wall and dueling on said leg, passing out, going into shock at some point and plenty of being taken care of.)” // submitted by @helpidkwhatmyusernameshouldbe and @aliciaaanne14
  3. The Last Herald Mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey :  “If you like fantasy books then Mercedes Lackey’s The Last Herald Mage trilogy is fairly well-peppered with whump too, mainly for the main character Vanyel. There’s whump in all three of the books, from what I remember, but especially the first and the third ones.” // submitted by @alipeeps
  4. Doctor Who Tie-In Novels :  Some of the Doctor Who tie-in novels have some very nice whump (I’ve mostly only read the 10th Doctor ones personally).” // submitted by @alipeeps
  5. Stargate Atlantis Tie-In Novels by Martha Wells :  “Oooh ooh and while we’re talking tie-in novels, oh my, the Stargate Atlantis tie-in novels! Now quite a few of them are good for whump but the best ones are the ones by Martha Wells - now SHE knows her whump! Lovely lovely Sheppard whump in Reliquary in particular. :D” // submitted by @alipeeps
  6. The Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson :  “Basically there’s a lot of whump to go around for all the characters but Fang gets a fair share of it and boy, is it amazing. From passing out mid-flight (oh yeah, they can fly) from blood loss to being beaten up, there’s just a lot of it.” // submitted by @aliciaaanne14
  7. The Infernal Devices Series by Cassandra Claire :  “I know The Mortal Instruments is pretty big, but this prequel is amazing. Jem Carstairs is basically a cinnamon roll that needs to be protected at all costs because he’s genuinely such a sweetheart. But he’s got a condition where he became addicted to a drug (yin fey) by some demons and he needs the drug to survive. So you can imagine what happens. There’s so many great scenes in this book and lots of after-care, meaning caring from Will. <3″ // submitted by @aliciaaanne14
  8. *edited* Parallel: The Secret Life of Jordan Mckay by Abra Ebner and Christina Corlett “A guy who has the ability to time travel. He uses it to fix things, but every time he does, his body gets weaker and the stakes get higher. One of my fav books.” // submitted by @pumpkinpixel
  9. Acheron and Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon :  “They’re pretty much every whumper’s dream. The two main characters go through every torture and torment out there from the beginning to the end of the book, but not to the point that it becomes pointless. Their sense of enduring and survival makes it all the merrier.” // submitted by @pumpkinpixel
  10. Bruiser by Neal Shusterman :  “The main character has the uncontrollable ability of transforming every physical hurt from those he loves unto him. Need I say more?” (No, you needn’t. *heart eyes*) // submitted by @pumpkinpixel
  11. The Scotland Yard Murder Squad by Alex Grecian :  “Starting with the book “The Yard”, these books have some pretty good whump, especially for Nevil Hammersmith. Plus, they are fun, quick read mysteries :)” // submitted by @lavoyageuse21
  12. Blink Once by Cylin Busby :  “This book is from the perspective of a guy in a coma the whole book is his recovery and stuff it’s actually amazing and the plot is good.” // submitted by @wolfypuppypiles
  13. Fracture by Megan Miranda :  “This book is amazing; the main character almost drowns in the first few pages and she’s in hospital for ages then stuff happens and mystery things… it’s good as there’s a lot of whump.” // submitted by @wolfypuppypiles
  14. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater : Shiver is amazing for physical and emotional whump plus it’s my favourite book and I just love it so much please read it it’s so freaking amazing.” // submitted by @wolfypuppypiles
  15. The Paranormalcy Series by Kiersten White :  “This series has some pretty good whump plus it’s just amazing. In the first book the main character and this other hot dude get zapped and batted around quite a bit, and then in the second book, I think, someone gets cursed so that the person they are in love with will fall asleep every time they come near each other, which is hilarious and they worry over him for ages. Yeah, just read it. It’s great. // Submitted by @wolfypuppypiles
  16. The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher :  “The books (not show) is extremely whumpy.” “Poor Harry. He gets kicked around a lot.” “It’s amazing that guy has survived 16 books.” // Submitted by @nothingimpossibleonlyimprobable and @lizzerbell and @vimesbootstheory and @estelkenobi
  17. Cal Leandros Series by Rob Thurman // submitted by @bromanceandships
  18. The Books of the Raksura Series by Martha Wells // submitted by @bromanceandships
  19.  Books by authors Courtney Schafer and Carol Berg // submitted by @bromanceandships
  20. Symphony of Ages Series by Elizabeth Haydon // submitted by @northernredwood
  21. All For The Game Series by Nora Sakavic :  “It’s absolute whump heaven and the characters are amazing!” “Basically it’s a bunch of guys constantly getting hurt, especially the protagonist Neil <3″ // submitted by @quicksilver-1998 and anonymous
  22. Homelanders Series by Andrew Klavan :  “AHHHH THERE’S THIS BOOK SERIES CALLED THE HOMELANDERS. ok no more caps for now. Anyway, it’s a super chill book series (4 books) and they’re amazing and full of whump from what I remember.” // submitted by anonymous
  23. Ashfall Trilogy by Mike Mullin :  This is a dystopian series with a decent amount of whump.” // submitted by anonymous
  24. The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch // submitted by anonymous
  25. The Monument 14 Series by Emmy Laybourne // submitted by anonymous

sheesh. i think i covered all of them - for now! thank you again to everyone who submitted suggestions for this! now i just have to find the time to read these. ;D

*note: if anyone does NOT want their name on this list as the source, let me know and i will remove it. being a whumper isn’t anything to be ashamed of, but if you would prefer to remain anonymous - as i myself do, to some extent - i definitely understand. :)*

Haven’t seen this post in a while so might as well bring it back up for all the new comers! I’ve also added a few more recs to the bunch… Happy readin’!

Transformation (Rai Kirah trilogy) by Carol Berg  |  Story revolving around a mistreated slave fighting against the odds and saving the world. Debasement, torture, imprisonment, lots of damage, prose like a razor, and some surprisingly heavy themes lurking within it…yeah.

P.S. Don’t let the book cover scare you away, it’s the crappiest I’ve seen and it was one of the reasons why I hadn’t touched it, until I did… and life wasn’t the same again.

Greatcoats (4 books) by Sébastien Castiel  |  One of the best novels I’ve read period, and not just for the whump. Poor Falcio (the main character) really does have some bad things happen to him. I’ll quote the second’s book opening just to kill you a bit:

“For you see, I have it on extremely good authority that the Greatcoat’s Lament is very real, and that it is even more painful and terrible than even the most horrifying stories made out. I would tell you more, but unfortunately, the “good authority” I mentioned is me.

My name is Falcio val Mond, one of the last of the King’s Greatcoats, and if you listen very carefully  you might still be able to hear me screaming.” - Falcio Val Mond

Assassins Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy) by Robin Hobb  |  Not as whumpy as the previous two, but there are some lovely scenes where Fitz (the main character) is poisoned and suffers from his fits, recovery is stretched throughout the end of the second book as well.

The Deathspeaker Codex (7 books) by Sonya Bateman   |  A wonderful rec by @whumpwanderer. Just started reading it so I can’t say much other than that I’m loving it so far, it’s one of those books where you can just sense that whump is coming! The main character’s been teasing me about his dark past from the very beginning, and he’s adorable!

Those Reviver books look awesome! I can only find the first and second books in my state’s library system (South Australia) 🥺 I might have to just read those and if I enjoy them enough I’ll scrounge around for the third!

Have you read A Strange and Stubborn Endurance? I think you’d enjoy it :)

Avatar

I hope you enjoy it!!! I haven't read the third one myself so I don't know if it's as good as the first two but I bet it is. One day I'll find it at the library lol. If you can't find it your library system maybe there's an ebook you can find?

I haven not read it but judging on the google summary it definitely sounds interesting! I'll put it on my to read list :)

Happy Whumpmas (੭*ˊᵕˋ)੭*🎅⛄❄️!!! You have just been snowballed by a secret whumper. Help to keep the snowball fight going by anonymously sending this to five other whumpers with a whump-related question of your choice: share a quote from your favorite whumpy book x

YAY IT'S WHUMPMAS!!! I love getting these snowballs every year! Thanks for thowing one at me!

Oh good question. Okay my first thought was to go to Reviver and it's sequel Lost Souls by Seth Patrick. They are SUCH a whumpfest. One of my favorite parts is this, from Lost Souls. Much more than a quote but you really need to read the whole part:

"You ever hear of the bullet ant, Jonah? They say its sting feels like being shot, hence the name. Trying to figure out is secret, they wondered if the jellyfish's trick couldn't be made to work alongside it. They came up with this. You know what you get? A thousand-fold increase. Don't even have to inject the stuff." Hopkins reached back to the table a moment later he returned holding a long cotton swab stick in one hand and a small glass beaker in the other. in the base of the beaker was some liquid. "When it soaks into the skin, any sensation at all makes your nerve endings scream. I've diluted this, don't worry. It's not full strength".
Hopkins dipped the cotton into the liquid and dabbed it on Jonah's cheek. For a moment it simply felt cold; then it was like fingernails digging into his skin, pushing harder, the pressure increasing until it felt like the flesh would burst. His hands struggled against the straps holding him down, urgently wanting to get at his offending skin and tear it away. Jonah heard himself start wail but all his attention was on the small piece of his cheek that was burning now, and intense, white-hot pain that--
It was gone.
Jonah breathed in short, stunned bursts. Hopkins smiled. "You see how it quickly it stops? The pain is extreme, but precise. The real beauty of it is that there's no damage, not even inflammation. It allows repeated use, even when targeting more sensitive tissue. This is best demonstrated by a single drop of a stronger solution, applied to one eye. Short-lived, but unbearable. Don't take my word for it, though." Smiling, Hopkins set the cotton swab and glass beaker on the table beside him, and flicked the intercom. "Take the word of your friend."
Jonah shook his head, the despair in his soul deepening with his fear fro Never. No, he tried to say, but it just came out as a moan, again and again, growing in volume while Hopkins turned to the inter com.
"Begin."

ISN'T THAT SO GOOD!!!!!!! And that's just one part of one of the books. There's a lot of great and very different whump in each book. Highly recommend.
