Hi there Ace!

I'm participating in a bingo reading challenge and one of the squares is to read a book that has been recommended to you by somebody else. I don't really know many people that read irl and those that do have very different tastes to my own so I was wondering if you had anything whumpy to rec? :) x

Oh how fun! Yeah I can give you something to read. My number one rec for you to read is Reviver by Seth Patrick.

Reviver is a paranormal/horror/crime solving/action adventure about a guy named Jonah Miller who is a Forensic Reviver. Revivers are people who have the ability to bring the dead back to life temporarily. Some of these people who with the police to help solve murders and suspicious deaths and to get any last messages for their loved ones and Jonah is one of the absolute best at it. The book is soooo full of whump. Jonah feels sick every time he does a revival, he passes out several times. I highly recommend it!

But on the off chance you've already read it, here are some others I'll rec as well: Outlander, Fourth Wing, The Murderbot Diaries, The Lies of Locke Lamora, and The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

Hi! Saying minimal things to avoid spoilers:

Forestborn:

A magical illness is spreading, the youngest prince (who everyone loves) gets it, so two people (with magic, which makes them persecuted by certain people) set out to retrieve a cure, they’re forced to bring along the prickly older prince.

Wildbound: I mean the sequel lol - the kingdoms are at war. Basically there is a lot of h/c (in both) for like everybody, lots of found family, trope city, angst, and only one very vague very skippable euphemistic sexual scene in Wildbound. There is some romance but it’s (imo) mild, and tempered/balanced by the found family of it all.

Mains are supposedly 16-25 I think? But you also don’t know for some because /they/ don’t know (they lived in the forest and lost track 🤷‍♀️). YA for sure, but maybe only 1-2 eyerolls of a possible 10 (and one is for that scene in Wildbound, which I would skip for multiple reasons and which imo contributes nothing to the plot. I am possible biased as a sex repulsed ace who thinks no sex scene ever has contributed to put but)

I think the writing is better in Wildbound than Forestborn (the first book sometimes I question tenses? But don’t know enough to say for sure, just sometimes feels weird), but it’s overall decent.

Basically a rec that is heavily based on the tropes which were 10/10 lol

sounds good!! Thanks for the summaries and rec!! I appreciate that! I'll keep it in mind for my next new book hunt :D

HIIII

I’m currently not watching anything new, but AM going through a book phase??? (Haven’t finished a book in years, so thank you audiobooks and also probably Vyvanse?) Also I’m pretty sure some came from a rec post here???

I’d say that all of these books have:

- a focus on found family (!!!!)

- an angsty/whumpable male main character

- some hurt/comfort for said mc

- fantasy/magic with (imo) good world building

and are NOT driven by romance (anything that is there is side-plot), and do not include graphic sexual content (or, at least, it was insignificant enough for me to ignore it - same goes for the listed tropes, really - I was able to read with my fav trope blinders on, which doesn’t mean other stuff wasn’t there, but I can’t say that for every book)

1. Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom (Kaz)

2. A Darker Shade of Magic/A Gathering of Shadows (Kell)

3. Dark Rise/Dark Heir (Will)

4. Sword Catcher (Kel)

(Why do they all have single syllable names mostly starting with K and ending with L?)

ANYWAY highly recommend (in order, from 1-4), and would love to know if you (or any followers) have recs for fic (of the above) OR other books that check the boxes (esp if heavy on the comfort!!)

THANKS!

BLESS YOU!!!! I love getting book recs especially fantasy books with little sex/romance!!! That's super rare nowadays so I thank you! I recently finished reading both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame and loved them both (despite them being very romance heavy I found that I didn't mind it at all and really enjoyed the world and the story) and now I'm eager for some more fantasy books to read. Thank you for the recs!! I'll go give them a look!

I have posted some Kaz whump fic recs in the past so I recommend you check out my Shadow and Bone tag for those. If anyone has fic recs for the others on the list please reply with your favs!!

As for other recs may I offer a few of my favorites? The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, The Ranger Apprentice books by John Flanagan, The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke.

Books: Whump Edition

first of all, holy heck… the response to my / anon’s request for whumpy books has been amazing (not to mention a little overwhelming)! thank you all for your suggestions; i can’t wait to read all these. ;) let’s get to it, shall we?

  1. Dick Francis books : “Dick Francis’s books are all wonderfully whumpy. They are murder mysteries set around the British horseracing world (Francis was a jockey before he became a writer) and despite being a bit formulaic they are wonderfully well written and fun to read. If I had to recommend one to start with, I’d say “Odds Against (Sid Halley #1)”, as it is the first of the Sid Halley books and he is my favourite Dick Francis character.” // submitted by @nemo-forever and @alipeeps
  2. The Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen :  “The first book has some nice whump (the main character gets whipped and then is taken care of in a dungeon cell), and the second book has such good whump that I just open it sometimes and read the whumpy part when I need some good whump. (It involves a broken leg, climbing a wall and dueling on said leg, passing out, going into shock at some point and plenty of being taken care of.)” // submitted by @helpidkwhatmyusernameshouldbe and @aliciaaanne14
  3. The Last Herald Mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey :  “If you like fantasy books then Mercedes Lackey’s The Last Herald Mage trilogy is fairly well-peppered with whump too, mainly for the main character Vanyel. There’s whump in all three of the books, from what I remember, but especially the first and the third ones.” // submitted by @alipeeps
  4. Doctor Who Tie-In Novels :  Some of the Doctor Who tie-in novels have some very nice whump (I’ve mostly only read the 10th Doctor ones personally).” // submitted by @alipeeps
  5. Stargate Atlantis Tie-In Novels by Martha Wells :  “Oooh ooh and while we’re talking tie-in novels, oh my, the Stargate Atlantis tie-in novels! Now quite a few of them are good for whump but the best ones are the ones by Martha Wells - now SHE knows her whump! Lovely lovely Sheppard whump in Reliquary in particular. :D” // submitted by @alipeeps
  6. The Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson :  “Basically there’s a lot of whump to go around for all the characters but Fang gets a fair share of it and boy, is it amazing. From passing out mid-flight (oh yeah, they can fly) from blood loss to being beaten up, there’s just a lot of it.” // submitted by @aliciaaanne14
  7. The Infernal Devices Series by Cassandra Claire :  “I know The Mortal Instruments is pretty big, but this prequel is amazing. Jem Carstairs is basically a cinnamon roll that needs to be protected at all costs because he’s genuinely such a sweetheart. But he’s got a condition where he became addicted to a drug (yin fey) by some demons and he needs the drug to survive. So you can imagine what happens. There’s so many great scenes in this book and lots of after-care, meaning caring from Will. <3″ // submitted by @aliciaaanne14
  8. *edited* Parallel: The Secret Life of Jordan Mckay by Abra Ebner and Christina Corlett “A guy who has the ability to time travel. He uses it to fix things, but every time he does, his body gets weaker and the stakes get higher. One of my fav books.” // submitted by @pumpkinpixel
  9. Acheron and Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon :  “They’re pretty much every whumper’s dream. The two main characters go through every torture and torment out there from the beginning to the end of the book, but not to the point that it becomes pointless. Their sense of enduring and survival makes it all the merrier.” // submitted by @pumpkinpixel
  10. Bruiser by Neal Shusterman :  “The main character has the uncontrollable ability of transforming every physical hurt from those he loves unto him. Need I say more?” (No, you needn’t. *heart eyes*) // submitted by @pumpkinpixel
  11. The Scotland Yard Murder Squad by Alex Grecian :  “Starting with the book “The Yard”, these books have some pretty good whump, especially for Nevil Hammersmith. Plus, they are fun, quick read mysteries :)” // submitted by @lavoyageuse21
  12. Blink Once by Cylin Busby :  “This book is from the perspective of a guy in a coma the whole book is his recovery and stuff it’s actually amazing and the plot is good.” // submitted by @wolfypuppypiles
  13. Fracture by Megan Miranda :  “This book is amazing; the main character almost drowns in the first few pages and she’s in hospital for ages then stuff happens and mystery things… it’s good as there’s a lot of whump.” // submitted by @wolfypuppypiles
  14. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater : Shiver is amazing for physical and emotional whump plus it’s my favourite book and I just love it so much please read it it’s so freaking amazing.” // submitted by @wolfypuppypiles
  15. The Paranormalcy Series by Kiersten White :  “This series has some pretty good whump plus it’s just amazing. In the first book the main character and this other hot dude get zapped and batted around quite a bit, and then in the second book, I think, someone gets cursed so that the person they are in love with will fall asleep every time they come near each other, which is hilarious and they worry over him for ages. Yeah, just read it. It’s great. // Submitted by @wolfypuppypiles
  16. The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher :  “The books (not show) is extremely whumpy.” “Poor Harry. He gets kicked around a lot.” “It’s amazing that guy has survived 16 books.” // Submitted by @nothingimpossibleonlyimprobable and @lizzerbell and @vimesbootstheory and @estelkenobi
  17. Cal Leandros Series by Rob Thurman // submitted by @bromanceandships
  18. The Books of the Raksura Series by Martha Wells // submitted by @bromanceandships
  19.  Books by authors Courtney Schafer and Carol Berg // submitted by @bromanceandships
  20. Symphony of Ages Series by Elizabeth Haydon // submitted by @northernredwood
  21. All For The Game Series by Nora Sakavic :  “It’s absolute whump heaven and the characters are amazing!” “Basically it’s a bunch of guys constantly getting hurt, especially the protagonist Neil <3″ // submitted by @quicksilver-1998 and anonymous
  22. Homelanders Series by Andrew Klavan :  “AHHHH THERE’S THIS BOOK SERIES CALLED THE HOMELANDERS. ok no more caps for now. Anyway, it’s a super chill book series (4 books) and they’re amazing and full of whump from what I remember.” // submitted by anonymous
  23. Ashfall Trilogy by Mike Mullin :  This is a dystopian series with a decent amount of whump.” // submitted by anonymous
  24. The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch // submitted by anonymous
  25. The Monument 14 Series by Emmy Laybourne // submitted by anonymous

sheesh. i think i covered all of them - for now! thank you again to everyone who submitted suggestions for this! now i just have to find the time to read these. ;D

*note: if anyone does NOT want their name on this list as the source, let me know and i will remove it. being a whumper isn’t anything to be ashamed of, but if you would prefer to remain anonymous - as i myself do, to some extent - i definitely understand. :)*

Haven’t seen this post in a while so might as well bring it back up for all the new comers! I’ve also added a few more recs to the bunch… Happy readin’!

Transformation (Rai Kirah trilogy) by Carol Berg  |  Story revolving around a mistreated slave fighting against the odds and saving the world. Debasement, torture, imprisonment, lots of damage, prose like a razor, and some surprisingly heavy themes lurking within it…yeah.

P.S. Don’t let the book cover scare you away, it’s the crappiest I’ve seen and it was one of the reasons why I hadn’t touched it, until I did… and life wasn’t the same again.

Greatcoats (4 books) by Sébastien Castiel  |  One of the best novels I’ve read period, and not just for the whump. Poor Falcio (the main character) really does have some bad things happen to him. I’ll quote the second’s book opening just to kill you a bit:

“For you see, I have it on extremely good authority that the Greatcoat’s Lament is very real, and that it is even more painful and terrible than even the most horrifying stories made out. I would tell you more, but unfortunately, the “good authority” I mentioned is me.

My name is Falcio val Mond, one of the last of the King’s Greatcoats, and if you listen very carefully  you might still be able to hear me screaming.” - Falcio Val Mond

Assassins Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy) by Robin Hobb  |  Not as whumpy as the previous two, but there are some lovely scenes where Fitz (the main character) is poisoned and suffers from his fits, recovery is stretched throughout the end of the second book as well.

The Deathspeaker Codex (7 books) by Sonya Bateman   |  A wonderful rec by @whumpwanderer. Just started reading it so I can’t say much other than that I’m loving it so far, it’s one of those books where you can just sense that whump is coming! The main character’s been teasing me about his dark past from the very beginning, and he’s adorable!

I'm laughing I had no idea "whump" was a thing....literally exactly what ive been looking for. Been scrolling through goodreads and book recs looking for men with tortured souls and couldn't find anything good enough😔 glad I could find your page. Lmao

If u want a rec, great sci-fi (military sci Fi/policial intrigue, tho I like character driven books best and this was character driven), Ninefox gambit aka machineries of Empire series.

Two main characters at least in the first book, Cheris, a general who is tasked with dealing with heretics, she works for a big ol' space empire. As a weapon, she gets the consciousness of an immortal genius tactician general installed in her brain to work with her. He is undead bc he's been put in this sensory deprivation black cradle for 400 years after committing the crime of mass murder. The empire loved him for his genius and thought he just went insane one day but still wanted to use him, so they put him under their control into the black cradle so they can use him as a weapon. He's quite literally a tortured soul. Spoiler about him....he has a goal

Fair warning, there is less of him in the second and third book. But more of him in the follow-up short stories book about him after the trilogy. Lotta whump material in him I think, that's why I've been missing him and similar characters

Also just great series

That's awesome! Welcome to the community! Glad you found your way here :D

Oooh a new scifi series?! Hell yeah! Love scifi books and I haven't heard of that one so that's awesome. That is a very interesting premise! I love it! Thanks for the rec! I will keep in in mind :)

It's so difficult to find decent book recommendations these days. I swear it's the same ten crappy romance novels being hyped all over Twitter, Tiktok and YouTube 😭. Thank goodness for the whump community honestly.

Yeah a lot of the book recs on TikTok and Twitter especially are very romance and/or smut filled and I'm def not into that. The whump community pulls out books I've never heard of but sound amazing. I've found some good stuff thanks to them! Like the Lies of Locke Lamora. Best book rec I've gotten from the whump community. I do have a book recs tag if you're looking for more!

Whump in books

Edit: Had to include all the pretty covers

A rec list ( I’ll be updating this list as I find more books )

This is male character whump only, and the books are in various genres. Descriptions will contain spme spoilers. I’ve submitted most of these to the Whumpapedia too but I’m keeping this list here for my future convenient reference.

Eric Carter series (Stephen Blackmoore) - noir urban fantasy

Eric is beaten, knocked unconscious, overuses magic and collapses all over the place, leaving his allies ( all of which hate him to a degree ) to pick up the pieces. Whump is sprinkled throughout the books, a bit of aftercare included - I’m making detailed whump lists for this series cause they’re so neat.

Orphan X series (Greg Hurwitz) - ex government spy action with found family trope

Evan gets concussed, stabbed, beaten and shot throughout the books, we get a few aftercare scenes and him struggling with the wounds after. Evan also has OCD and we see that throughout the series.

Dragon Unleashed (Grace Draven) - historical setting fantasy romance

Malachus is shot and left to die when found by a travelling group, taken in and nursed back to health. Several chapters of descriptive whump, exactly how the arrows are removed, how much pain he’s in, the healing (although sped up) process etc.

Down Comes the Night - YA atmospheric fantasy with romance at the end

Wren is tasked with healing Hal (her sworn enemy) from a serious illness. Hal is dying and at her mercy, recovering very slowly, with setbacks. They have healing sessions, one time she neglects him and he gets worse, she kidnaps him, it goes wrong and he gets hypothermia. The whump is a plotpoint.

Bloodwitch (book 3 of Witchlands series - Susan Dennard ) - YA Fantasy

Aeduan is one of the 4 main characters where each one gets a book focused more on their story. He was portrayed as a villain in the 1st 2 books. He is shot with poisoned arrows that make him lose his magic. He can’t heal and ends up at the mercy of someone who previously stabbed him in the heart (love interest). We get whump while the characters are travelling. Aeduan is not having a good time in this book.

Frost and Fugitive (Kate Avery Ellison)- YA atmospheric fantasy (Fugitive is Frost but from Gabe’s POV)

Gabe is on the run and found in the woods by Lia, shot, bleeding in the snow. He recovers in her barn, still in hiding. Several chapters of whump. He doesn’t start getting better until she brings him in the house in the warmth.

Angelfall (Susan Ee)- dystopian urban fantasy romance

Raffe is an angel that lost his wings (we get the gory details of how) and taken in by Penryn who saw what happened and hopes to use him. Whump at the beggining, some whump sprinkled later.

Homebound ( Lydia Hope) - dystopian alien adult romance

Simon is an alien that got stranded on earth years ago and had since been wasting away in prison, not before being experimented on for years. Gemma, a prison worker, helps him get his health and strength back. Whump is a plot point. Simon’s recovery journey is told in great detail.

Lighthouse duet ( Carol Berg) - Fantasy

Valen is injured and taking shelter in a monastery, on the run from his family. Lots of whump sprinkled throughout the duology. There’s one part where he ends up back with his family who punish him by parading him tied up, in a mask, in front of the entire city. In the second book he gets injured and taken care of.

Charles Hayden series by Sean Thomas Russel - Historical Naval Fiction

Hayden is stabbed, concussed, shipwrecked and gets hypothermia and is taken care of by his crew, afterwards he’s shipwrecked again and found by a doctor on the coast of France, then taken to a woman’s house where he takes a while to recover before finding the rest of the crew. There’s whump sprinkled throughout.

Cold Summer (Gwen Cole) - YA time travel - part historical fantasy romance

Kale time-travels back and forth to WW2 and pops up back home with various wounds from fighting on the front lines. Ends up getting shot and in the hospital. Lots of angst in this one.

Shades of magic series (V.E. Schwab) - NA / grimdark Fantasy

Kell (our redhead) gets in a lot of scrapes, is stabbed a lot, bleeds a lot etc. Lots of whump for Kell throughout the trilogy. At one time he is kidnapped, tied up and tears his wrists open trying to get free, almost bleeds out.

The Grim Company series (Luke Skull) - Grimdark Fantasy

Cole goes through a lot in this series. In the second book he is imprisoned and works in the mines. His health is so poorly that he’s nicknamed Ghost.

The Prince of Fools (and following 2 books by Mark Lawrence) - Grimdark Fantasy (but funny asf)

Jalan is injured multiple times, also has motion sicknes, get f-ed up in many ways. He gets rescued by his close friend and we also get some aftercare (not a lot compared to other books but these are so fun to read)

The Sons of Thestian ( & Sequel by M.E. Vaughan) - NA Fantasy

Book 3 is not out yet but this cover is great.

Rufus, a mage, largely hated by a lot of people, overuses his magic in the 1st book wich combined with a nasty head wound causes him to go into a coma from which he recovers slowly. In the 2nd book he and his little brother are found very ill in the mountains and brought to safety, where he recovers slowly once again. We find out through flashbacks that he’d been tortured on top of it.

Maradaine Constabulary Series (Marshall Ryan Maresca) - Detective Fantasy

Minox, a detective and secretly a mage who can’t control his magic, is kidnapped in the 1st book and rescued by his partner, after almost bleeding out. In the following books he loses control of his magic often, with whumpy consequences. This series contains a lot of magic overuse whump.

This Vicious Grace (Emily Thiede) - YA Fantasy Romance

Dante is a bodyguard whose secret power is that he can heal very quickly if he’s in overall good health. He gets thrown is prison for a few days (weeks?) during which his health declines, but he’s rescued, helped to heal by his employer. She is someone who can drain away other people’s powers and use them. In the final battle, Dante gets injured, but to save his employer he offers up all his healing powers for her to use. He ends up having to recover from his wounds the hard way at the end of the book.

The Thief (Meghan Whalen Turner) - Adult Fantasy

Gen is a thief who ends up on a quest, getting very injured very often in the meantime. There is aftercare at the end of the book.

Nathan Peake series (Seth Hunter) - Historical Naval Fiction

Nathan throughout the series is almost hanged, gets in many fights, is shot in the head (with some good whumpy aftercare), shot in the chest with a TBI causing memory loss, with plenty aftercare, stabbed and more.

Red Roses mean Love (Jacquie D'Alessandro) - historical romance

Stephen is shot and left for dead, found by Hayley and brought back to her house where he takes his time recovering in hiding, not disclosing his identity.

Sorcery of Thorns (Margaret Rogerson) - YA fantasy romance

Nathaniel is attacked and injured, ending up bedridden, partially recovering and then going back into action, overuses magic etc. Second half of the book has him weak and shaky.

Lightning (Dean Koontz) - time-travel urban fantasy

Stefan time-travels to protect Laura, gets shot in the process, and has to keep protecting her while injured. He ends up needing rescue himself hehe. Lots of aftercare.

Wow! Thanks for the recs! It looks like some of these might be up my alley…

I will definitely be coming back to this once I have time to read full books again :)

Whump Alert. This is not a drill.

Calling out to our dearest community - Drop whatever you’re doing and go buy “The North Water” by Ian McGuire.

Apart from it being so beautifully written you’d gulp it down in one sitting, the main character, Patrick Sumner (who has clearly captivated my heart) goes through what we all hold dear in this community. To name a few of his ordeals: Addiction, withdrawal, hypothermia, fever, nightmares, getting shot, self-loathing, trauma, physical, emotional, sadness, torment, betrayal… and the list goes on. He will truly break your heart, you will heart it break I swear.

I highly recommend you reading the book first before watching the series. It was such an exhilarating experience to watch all those scenes come to life so perfectly and so well-portrayed by Jack O’Connell. I don’t think I’ll ever look at him without thinking of Sumner :( I miss him so much already ugh!

So yeah, buy. this. book.

Disclaimer: There’s one particular dark scene in the very beginning which you might want to watch out for.

Hi! I saw the post you reblogged about powers that hurt, and I wanted to recommend the John Smith duology by Christopher Farnsworth. The main character has some type of telepathy, he can pretty much read any person, and he can make people believe they suffer an injury or illness as if it was real. But that comes with the consequence that he also has to suffer through a certain amount of that pain a few hours later. Plus the use of said powers is draining.

Avatar

Ooooh 👀 That sounds super good!!!! Oh damn the whump potential with that kind of power is amazing. I'm definitely gonna chrclnthis out. Thanks so much for the rec!! I'm hyped lol.

Alright homies I just got done reading The Lies of Locke Lamora series and it was so whumperful and amazing. S.e.r.i.ously. I’m am forever changed. Anyone got some good whumpy book suggestions??
(What am I supposed to do with my life now? Tell me. Please)

I’m always looking out for whumpy books! If anyone has any I NEED RECS!

The only one I can think of right now is A Little Life Hanya Yanagihara. Really long read and deals with very heavy subjects. The main character has unexplained health issues that cause him to have a limp and chronic pain. He also suffers from trauma that happened to him as a child. Difficult subject matter so be warned!

The Grim Company from Luke Scull and

Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence

The Lighthouse Duet and The Sanctuary Duet I think Carol Berg is a whumper

Also The Curse of Chalion is amazing!

There’s so much whump in the fantasy genre that’s amazing but how about some simple fiction:

The Ryder Creed Series by: Alex Kava

2015 Breaking Creed (PTSD/caught in and explosion)

2015 Silent Creed (caught in mudslide/concussion/thinking of his SAR dogs before himself😭)

2016 Reckless Creed

2018 Lost Creed

2019 Desperate Creed

I have only read the first two but I’m very hopeful for more whump in this series and she’s just a great writer.

Journey to the Center of the Earth By Jules Verne (1864)

Whumpee: Axel - Anxiety (from being lost in the cave), injury (head hit on a rock when falling down a hill), waking up, weakness, and hallucinations.  (available at archive.org)

Book rec - the Ascendence Trilogy by Jennifer Nielsen. It’s realistic fiction taking place in a fictional monarchy on the brink of war. It’s fr got everything. Whipping, whumpee begging for mercy, torture for information in several instances, both with the protag and love interest. A friend is forced to beat the protag in the first book, protag watches a few people he loves die or nearly die in the third. It’s honestly just a fantastic story, not just whomp. My favorite book series :)

Sounds whumptastic, thanks for the rec!

Whump Book Suggestion

I’ve been reading this new book that I found at Walmart. It’s called Bloodleaf by Crystal Smith. The summary was interesting enough for me to give it a try, and OMG! The amount of whump in this book is both surprising and wonderful!

Do yourself a favor, buy it from the link provided below. I paid an extra $5 that I didn’t need to by buying it in store, instead of buying it online. I hope you all enjoy!

I have only read the first two but I’m very hopeful for more whump in this series and she’s just a great writer.

Adding Reviver by Seth Patrick. It's so good and has some great whump in it.

Book Rec!

I'm reading this book called Reviver by Seth Patrick and it's pretty whumpy. It's a crime/horror kind of book about this guy Jonah who is a forensic reviver. Revivers are people who can bring back the recent dead to allow them to speak one last time. Jonah does revivals for crimes. Those who are murdered or died suspiciously. Things happen after a tough revival and get creepy. The book is so good!

Anyway, he is whumped basically the whole book. Each time he does a revival he's nauseous, dizzy, exhausted. One time it was so bad he threw up, passed out and woke up in the hospital two days later. Jonah has nightmares, wakes up crying (he actually cries often and I love it). And he gets shot too and it's bad! His friend Never gets whumped a bit too and it's great.

And I found out there's a sequel too! Woo!!
