Has anyone read The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson? Please tell me it gets better.
(The telling instead of showing is ridiculously abundant and getting on my nerves. Among other issues.)
How would you guys feel if I took book recommendations and then read and reviewed them here for you? These books could be ones that you have read and loved, read and hated, or haven’t read yet and want to know if they’re worth reading.
I’m unsure how fast I can read and review during uni, but I think we could make this remarkable. I am beyond grateful to have so many followers (I love you all so much), and I believe we could make these recommendations and reviews a fantastic, worthwhile venture.
I would communicate with you guys, and we could decide how I would analyze, review, and critique the literature. Similarly, these blog posts would be open for everyone to give their own opinions and ideas—this would be a communal thing. After all, literature is supposed to draw us all together.
You could recommend anything: a poem, an essay, a book, a play, etc.; Contemporary or thousands of years old… go for it! I will compile them into a list and work through them as best I can. Then, we can all discuss the piece after I post a review. :)
I am not saying that my literary analysis is holy, but I do pride myself on my gift of reading, interpreting, and understanding literature. As an English major, I take literary analysis extremely seriously. Because of this, I realize how important it is to be accurate, honest, and critical. I merely want to share my thoughts and opinions about works of literature and hear others’ perspectives in return.
I can share photos of my annotations, update you on my thoughts as I read, and finally post a long review with everything included: my general thoughts, themes, character analysis, plot analysis, symbolism, and anything else you can think of.
What do you think? :) please let me know your thoughts in the comments and if you’d like to reblog this post, please do! I think it would be fun to have a big reading group on tumblr.
(We can find a cute name for it later, too! I can also create a community, I bet. :) )
Can i get some book recommendations for worsening my depressive episodes please? ☺
Oh my, did you come to the right place. You may have already read Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, but I recommend it anyway. I also recommend The Fall or even The Stranger by Albert Camus. There is a short story titled “Bartleby the Scrivner” by Herman Melville and this one is also really good and depressing. Perhaps Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Or even the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder. The short story titled “Story of an Hour” is an interesting and sad little piece by Kate Chopin. Or, one of my favorites, the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller.
Let me know what you think and if you need anymore. Also, feel better soon ahahah, my dms are always open
hi your literally so sweet, i just recently found your blog and i love it! do you have a favorite book in particular? i’ve been trying to get into reading but i’ve never found one interesting enough
You’re so kind. Thank you so much :)
That’s such a tough question, to be honest. I’d probably have to say The Secret History (by Donna Tartt) is my favorite overall. I read it years ago, and it’s stuck with me ever since. But it’s not for everyone—the material is heavy and pseudo-academic. It’s not everyone’s type of book, and I get that.
If I were to give you a suggestion for a book to read, it may be helpful if you told me what you enjoy about a book: genre, themes, plot, etc. :) Then, I can narrow your preferences down to one of my favorite books from there! (Or tell me what kind of TV shows/movies you enjoy since you don’t read often and what you enjoy about them). I don’t want to recommend a book that isn’t for everyone and have you be disgruntled with reading.
Thank you for asking and for being kind
Ok. So normally the question should be about your fav book but... I wanna ask what's a book that you read and that you would never ever recommend to anyone?
(oh and at the same time, tell us about your fav book of all time too lol)
That’s an excellent question. I have two answers to this, and I’ll explain why. I read one book, and it was fantastic all around but also absolutely devastating. I would never recommend that anyone read it, but it's worth the pain if you choose to: A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. It is so beautiful yet incredibly tragic. Read at your own risk.
And just a book I would not recommend in general is Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan. I really don’t like this book and writing style with a passion. (Even my professors know that I hate this book). I understand that the story is a good allegory, but as a story itself, I find it ridiculous. (I mean, the protagonist Christian is locked up in castle doubting for a few horrible days of torture and then he suddenly remembers he has a key in his pocket and the line reads something like, “and then they escaped!”, then the story moves on. Like okay, the big build up for what??? And John Bunyan cannot write a poem to save his life I’m sorry.)
My favorite book is a big basic to be honest. I read The Secret History by Donna Tartt ~5 years ago, but I think about it everyday. The language is so delicate and eloquent, the characters are round and well developed, and the story itself just bleeds dark academia—which is all I crave. The book has gotten so popular, but I truly admire the creativity, symbolism, and outright irony in it. It’s a great read, especially for a literature student.
Thank you for your questions :) What about you?
