Sometimes I think about that interview where Geoff Johns explained his rationale for his AU of Two-Face being Harvey’s sister, which basically boiled down to “we like Bruce and Harvey’s relationship in canon, but we had to bend over backwards to explore it more deeply without making them gay.”

IGN: And finally, Johns explained his thought behind making Two-Face twin siblings Jessica and Harvey Dent, and to have Jessica form a romantic relationship with Bruce Wayne.

"Before we started this book, we talked a lot about Two-Face and Harvey Dent and Jessica. We planted Jessica and Harvey in book one obviously, and we knew where we were going, but that was a major part of this book and a major reveal at the end," Johns said.

"The twist of it is, it's supposed to be surprising and shocking, and hopefully, for people who expect for things to go a different way, it's new and intriguing. But more importantly, as you said, it's emotional. And having Bruce actually have a connection with Jessica that's as deep as it is, you know, we see at the end of this that clearly there's something wrong, and we'll be exploring that in the future.

"But it just creates for us a whole new villain or character like Two-Face to explore in an entirely new way. It's even more personal for Bruce and Harvey Dent than in the mainstream books. So that's why we made that choice, so, again, it becomes a more personal story. That's what we want to get out of these books, an emotional story rather than just straight action."

Really fucking obv. spoilers for “Batman: Earth One” Vol. 3

Volume three of Batman: Earth One (Geoff Johns’ alternate universe Batman origin, released exclusively as graphic novels) finally came out. I skimmed it, hoping beyond hope that there might be a surprise. The finale of Part 2 ended with Harvey dying, his sister getting her face scarred, and speaking in her evil asshole brother’s voice to Bruce. We all knew exactly where this was going.

And yet, the solicits and the back cover both teased “Is Harvey Dent alive? He sure SEEMS to be since he’s got goons following his orders!” As if we literally didn’t see exactly how this was gonna play out.

But then, the actual graphic novel ITSELF tries to make a whole big mystery about whether Harvey really is alive or not. It spends the whole damn thing making you think that his sister isn’t crazy and hasn’t suddenly, inexplicably manifested a second personality as her brother! Maybe Harvey really IS alive! Or maybe someone ELSE is pretending to be Harvey in order to drive the sister crazy, or make her seem like she’s crazy!

Nope. It’s her. It’s exactly what we knew it would be from the end of Vol. 2. And the fact that Johns treats this like it’s some kind of huge, shocking, masterfully-executed twist just makes it all the more fucking annoying. Literally the only twist is that she isn’t even scarred, despite wearing a tiny little face mask for much of the issue. They didn’t even have the guts to make her a lady Two-Face!

Sorry, Bruvey shippers, this is the closest DC’s gonna get to Harvey and Bruce ever kissing anytime soon. Christ, Johns couldn’t stand to even make them be friends in this universe.

Fucking christ. At least Johns gives us more of his genuinely-great Croc as Batman’s ally. But between “Harvey” and the fact that it sets up Johns’ Joker showing up in this series, this was a fucking hell of a waste of time.

For my first review in eight months, I’ve decided to examine the second volume of Batman: Earth One by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, with a special focus on (what else?) Harvey Dent and his twin sister, Jessica. I also give quick looks at the story’s awesome Killer Croc and awful Riddler, with a special cameo by a certain femme fatale at the very end.

So Batman: Earth One vol.2 is finally out, and I was curious to know what was going to happen to Harvey Dent and his twin sister in his alternate universe, Mayor Jessica Dent. Mainly, I was curious to know if Geoff Johns was going to do the same old same old lazy stuff, or the obvious “new” twist for his Two-Face.

(SPOILER WARNING!!!)

Entirely unsurprisingly, it’s the latter. Here’s a hint: it’s the EXACT SAME FUCKING TWIST as what Straczynski did with Mr. and Mrs. Luthor (aka Lex2, I shit you not) in Superman: Earth One.

*Two-Facepalm*

Oh, and Harvey is apparently a dick, in keeping with his cameo in volume one. So his death carries absolutely no weight. Sounds like it’s Beware the Batman all over again. Ugh.

(END SPOILER WARNING!!!)

Expect scans later once I get my hands on a copy and have the time. If you don’t want to see them, the tags will be “new comic spoilers”, “spoilers,” and “batman spoilers.” Apologies in advance.

Quick "Forever Evil" thoughts

Has anyone read the Forever Evil issues for the Joker, Ivy, and Ventriloquist? I was going to buy them, but I opted instead for the new Batman: Black and White. If you've read them, please let me know what you think. The Joker one looked like it had potential, and I'm curious to know what Ivy's origin is now, if it was indeed revealed as the preview made it seem.

As for Forever Evil itself, this just feels like a nastier repeat of Underworld Unleashed by way of the Secret Society stuff from both Infinite Crisis and the first couple issues of Final Crisis. Otherworldly evil gathers all of the villains to do their bidding under the pretense of giving the villains what they most desire? Check. Minor D-list character is brought in just to be violently killed off as to make the main villains look good? Check. Major established hero is trounced and brought before the mob of villains as a display of the main villains' prowess? Check. Hell, just like in Underworld Unleashed (specifically, in issues of Hawkman), it features the Scarecrow toadying for the main villain!

I was far more interested in this story when I thought it was going to involve the villains FIGHTING the Crime Syndicate, which is where I assume this is still going. Until then, though, it's derivative as fuck. But eh, if you haven't read any of the above stories, I guess that wouldn't be a problem.

Also, I still really, really don't see the appeal in David Finch's art. I just really don't get it.

Okay, back to work on my review of the Two-Face issue.
