FAN: Was there a time you remember thinking that you finally understood who Sam Winchester was as a character ?
JARED: I think I learned along the way. You know, it was a ladder. It wasn’t an elevator. So, it was step by step. But I think… God… Honestly I think it was maybe Sacrifice. You know, I feel like that was his motivating factor, which makes it all the more difficult that he kind of might have thought he let his brother down in the finale. Because you know he says to his brother like "I didn’t want to let you down" And I think that’s when I was like "oh, all my actions prior kinda make sense" about the times he fought against it even as far back as the pilot. Like, I think Sam didn’t want to go with his brother cause part of him didn’t want to admit that he didn’t want to let his brother down. And it seemed like the cornerstone, the linchpin of what made Sam tick, whether it was conscious or subconscious.
