y’all ever see a piece of fan content about your favorite character that is so horrifically different from what you personally believe and you just
Finding something cool and thematically rich and wanting to see what other people think abt it and all I find is shipping
YEAH
For real... shipping is cool but sometimes I want to see people get real deep about the themes
I want to see concept art and fanart of the visually interesting elements in shows and movies, or just clear pictures of costumes and props and stuff like that, but mostly I just find shipping.
chordate fandom is the worst fandom
“True enlightenment” sounds an awful lot like an echo chamber.
I can’t fucking believe there’s a “Folgercest” fandom.
Person 1: *goes out of their way to insult/make fun of harmless interest/hobby/piece of media/etc.*
Person 2: “I disagree with you/I like that thing and you’re being pointlessly mean”
Person 1: “you are so Whiny and Immature and the like, UNLIKE ME who couldn’t even handle other people liking something so much that I just had to go out of my way to say it’s stupid/lame/make other people feel bad for liking it”
honestly the most pure thing on the internet are those people who are like, completely and totally dedicated to a hobby, and they’re just so happy about it and willing to share everything they know about it with the world
one guy likes ants, all his videos are wonderfully informative ant videos. another guy is determined to beat super mario 64 in as few A presses as possible. that’s amazing. please continue on with godspeed you pure and holy folks of extremely specific interests
the THING IS: classic scifi (star trek, doctor who) is about love and kindness and acceptance and exploration, and when it’s not entirely about that, it’s about overcoming evil institutions (b5, star wars). so like. why do bigoted, hateful, disgusting people always state that they’re a scifi fan, when all of the media they consume goes strictly against their toxic beliefs? seriously, why
I know from my experience with sci-fi fandoms that Star Wars, Babylon 5, and especially Star Trek attract a lot of people from the engineering and polemology disciplines/hobbies who bring with them the conservative beliefs that are common in those communities. To them the entire space opera genre is little more than a collection of theoretical engineering technology and military tactics. Things like characters and themes are incidental.
I guess that’s what you’re seeing?
the land before time wiki is the most wild place on the internet
Wait a minute...so, the girl triceratops’ name is...Sarah Topps?
I either never got the joke, or I simply forgot it (I haven’t seen the movie since I was a kid).
Furry culture terrifies me.
any “fandom” surrounding irl people is doomed bc apparently people dont know how to be normal and instead treat them the same way they treat fictional characters and fandoms for works of fiction
I know this isn’t exactly a hot new take, but that fucking Sing movie looks like the most by-the-numbers modern animated film ever
Just you watch. There will be hardcore Sing fans. There will be Sing fanart and fanfics. Wars will be waged over the canon, subtext, and ships of Sing. Maybe they'll be confined to a closely-knit community in some distant corner of the Internet, but they'll be there.
Wait...There really is a shoplifting fandom? I thought it was just a meme.
yes. there are people on this site who post pictures of their ‘hauls’, almost always consisting of makeup, jewelry, or other frivolous bullshit no one needs to survive.
Nope!!! There’s a serial killer fandom too!! Among other horrible illegal groups that tumblr doesn’t give a shit about removing :^)
my paranoia is always like
is the serial killer fandom just shitheads or are there serial killers in the fandom too
I know of at least one confirmed instance where someone in this sites serial killer fandom went on to commit a stabbing.
Earth. What happened?
It’s a very very close competition but I’m gonna say medieval fantasy geeks are most often the worst geeks. I would love to hear horror stories about other fandoms though. The more the merrier.
I could take pot shots at bronies but that’s almost insanely too easy.
The bronies are one of the most good-natured fan communities I’ve ever been a part of. People outside the fandom seem to want it to be problematic, and so remain (willfully?) ignorant of how harmonious and tolerant it is.
The worst fan community I can think of is electronic music. I used to be on three forums devoted largely or entirely to E.M. They were hugely different from each other, but shared certain terrible common elements. Most of the active members were really pretentious self-absorbed jerks who were constantly sniping each other in a neverending battle to prove that they’re the genius overlord of E.M. and everyone around them is a mentally handicapped poser. Basically, imagine the worst group of tech geeks you’ve ever known combined with the worst group of music snobs you’ve ever known.
Oh, and be sure to always call electronic music “electronic music,” never “techno” or “electronica” or anything else the inbred noobs call it.
I was going to go on a spiel about horror movie fans, but I don’t really have enough experience to judge. I’ll just say that my limited participation and encounters with horror movie fan discourse paint a very negative picture of the community.
the “uncategorized fandoms” section of ao3 is something else
