This was the only photo that turned out from inside the underground caves/lava tubes. I didn’t have a tripod – basically it was pitch black inside of there, this photo is a bit misleading since I hand held it while the aperature stayed open for a good .4 seconds…it’s the only one that wasn’t badly light smeared. I didn’t know the boulder was above his head until I looked at the photo afterwards because you couldn’t see it in the dark. I didn’t actually see all of this detail in person – it’s a part of the fun of taking photos in the dark outside and using long shutter speeds. Some of the space becomes revealed to you, bypassing the limitations of your eyes. I really loved it in there, it was very surreal. No flash was used here, and I didn’t have my SLR. I don’t use my digital SLR much anymore – I hate the bulk. Mirrorless seems appealing, but it’s too expensive for me right now. Thankfully my phone has manual settings or else I wouldn’t have been able to adjust the shutter speed in there. I like using different cameras though, there are little flavors to each and it forces me to work within different bounds. It’s challenging.

Karst sinkholes | Luoquanyan Village of Xuan’en County, Hubei province

Karst landscapes are formed primarily by the dissolution of bedrock … Rainwater, which is slightly acidic, picks up carbon dioxide as it runs through the soil, becoming more acidic. It then trickles, rushes and flows through cracks in the bedrock, slowly widening them into tunnels and voids. Over time, if a cave chamber gets large enough, the ceiling can gradually collapse, opening up huge sinkholes.
