Reading the dawn of Yangchen. I can't be the only person that finds it incredibly funny that Roku seems to be only avatar within several generations to have a traditional avatar journey resulting in him being told at age 16 and only mastering all four elements in his mid 20's? Yangchen found out herself when she was like 10 ish bc she was plagued by nightmares of past avatars, and was already an established avatar when we meet her at age 16-17 in the first novel. Kyoshi only found out when she was 16 bc the earth kingdom method of identifying the avatar doesn't work when the avatar's an orphan and they thought it was someone else first, but she mastered all four elements in less than two years. Aang was told at age 12 because of the war looming around the corner, and had to master all elements within less than year out of pure necessity (i say less than a year bc Aang was told abt the comet during the winter solstice and the comet appears at the end of summer). Korra discovered she was the avatar at the ripe old age of four or five and managed to bend three out of four elements by that age, and mastered all four at age 16.

To be fair to Roku, we're not really told how old Kuruk is by the time he masters all four elements. I'm pretty sure he was told at age 16 as well but I'm assuming he finished his journey earlier seeing as he died at age 33. Kuruk's story was also quite a bit more exciting (and dark) because he fought dark spirits on the regular. Roku was just kinda there. All he did was be bisexual and fail to prevent his bestie from colonizing the world.

All of this to say, out of all avatars in the immediate surrounding cycle, Roku once again comes out looking a bit like a chump and I'm loving the consistency lmao

It disheartens me still seeing people compare every Avatar to one another, and for some reason Aang always being at the bottom of every comparison.

Like first of all, every Avatar is different. They might have the same spirit connected to them but their ways of living, their philosophies, their convictions, their training and their skillset is all different. They all have a different mindset and different weaknesses. What's the point of even comparing?

People always make Kyoshi out to be the most powerful one and while i don't disagree that Kyoshi was very powerful, so are the other Avatars. "Kyoshi made an island!" Yeah and i'm kind of convinced the other Avatars would also be able to do that too tbh. She used the Avatar state to do it, every Avatar is supposedly able to access that (we've seen that trauma or spiritual blocks can get in the way so they don't always have access or full control). The difference is that most Avatars would NOT have made the decision to create an island. That's what made this a powerful move, because Kyoshi had the creative idea to do it and only Kyoshi would have come up with that.

People also always compare Korra at age 18, already being a fully trained avatar, in a full rage poisoned avatar state to Aang, at age 12 after only a year of training. Come on, how can you possibly call that a fair comparison?

I seriously need people to watch atla again and actually pay attention this time. Aang learned about being the Avatar, having the responsibility to stop an oncoming war, then learned this war was ongoing for 100 years while he was asleep, and his entire people died in a mass genocide, and now to stop this war he has to become a fully trained avatar before summers end. And all of this happened to him within the span of a few weeks in his experience. This is a massive task and he didn't even have a year to complete it, he had about 8 months (winter solstice is when he learns of the comet, that's december 21st, comet is at summer's end so i'm assuming late august early september, and this universe also seems to work with a 12 month system, bc i doubt Bryke would have made up their own science in this universe) And Aang accomplished all of it. And he was only 12! Not counting him as one of the most powerful Avatars bc he's *checks notes* a pacifist child you don't vibe with is WILD to me.

Aang is a force to be reckoned with, but people refuse to see it because Aang isn't "badass" in their eyes. When will pacifism cease to be seen as a weakness?
