Netflix atla live action review ep 1-3
So i was able to watch the first three episodes and i wrote down some thoughts. Strap yourselves in, it's gonna be a big post. There's a lot i don't like, but it's not all negative. So let's get the negative out of the way first, then we'll get to the positive.
Azula apologists r so dumb because u don't see this kind of sympathy for eddy's brother in the ed edd n eddy fandom.
There's a fandom for ed edd n eddy?
On a more serious note: Azula deserves sympathy. She is a victim of abuse, she is a 14yr old child that didn't get the guidance and love she so craved. Does that excuse the aweful things she did and said? No. But empathy comes a long way in these situations bc i do understand how she ended up like this and hope she can become a better person away from the FN royal family (yes even away from Zuko, i truly believe in order for her to get better she needs to be seperated from that whole family.)
What i don't like is when people pretend Azula was anything other than who she was in the show. I've seen people say that secretly she did really love Zuko, and that she wanted Zuko to go home with her for other reasons than claiming another victory for the Fire Nation, that she genuinely wanted Zuko to have a hero moment by saying he was the one that killed the Avatar (even though Azula literally explained her reason for that in great detail lmao). I don't believe any of those things are true and i think it's kind of weird to pretend they are. Azula was a fucked up child that used the manipulation tactics she got from her family for her own goals and profit, and she broke down when she realized she couldn't control people through fear anymore.
Incredibly specific moments in atla i think about ALL the time (i am Not normal)
- Zuko's eyes slightly widening when witnessing Katara's bloodbending for the first time
- Aang and Katara just missing each other looking back at the other after their argument in The Warriors of Kyoshi
- Toph holding onto Sokka's arm once on Appa when he didn't have a saddle and once on the boat bringing them to the lake town
- The moon being in full view as Suki tries to kiss Sokka in the Serpent's Pass, and the shadow returning as Sokka leaves
- The "four seasons four loves" motif coming back throughout the episodes of the Northern Watertribe and specifically as Sokka gives himself up to serve in the battle against Zhao's seige and Yue turns away and quietly cries as she watches him walk off
- Longshot talking for the first time ever as Jet lay dying
- In that same breath, the way Toph says "he's lying" as they walk away from Jet knowing that he's going to die
- Aang looking back at the Southern Airtemple ruins along with Momo as they fly away from it, seeing it disappear behind the clouds (this one specifically makes me cry so much)
- The chants as Aang gets summoned by the Lion Turtle in book 3 being the SAME as the chants when Aang fuses with the ocean spirit in book 1 (there's other moments with these chants i think but i can't remember them off the top of my head)
- Aang taking down Ozai's airship in the finale as his first attack and Sokka cheering him on like a proud older brother
- Katara immediately without a shadow of a doubt responding "Aang won't lose" when Zuko questions if he'll be able to take on Ozai
- Aang knowing Zuko was gonna fire at him in the crystal catacombs as soon as Zuko laid eyes on him (he gasped before Zuko even made a move) when even Azula wasn't sure what Zuko was gonna do in that scenario
Haven't cleaned my inbox in a while. I wonder what's in there-
Alright.
Y'ALL
Now THIS is the first look they should have given us from the start. Not those bad photoshopped pictures with generic backgrounds. At least here we see the costumes come to their full potential!
"Azula never underestimated nonbenders!" Except she literally did? She underestimated Mai and Ty Lee, she constantly underestimates Sokka, she even underestimates other benders (notably Katara and Zuko) and that's what brought her downfall.
"Azula chose Mai and Ty Lee for her team bc she knew how powerful they are even without bending" yeah, and because she underestimated their ability to make their own decisions and to overcome their fear of her.
"Azula kept Sokka busy during the invasion bc she knew to watch out for him!" No she kept him busy because she knew there was no way Aang and Toph would leave his side if he stayed. She tried other methods before by taunting Toph into lashing out, and she noticed how once Sokka figured out her plan to waste their time, Toph calmed down and listened. She knew then and there that Sokka was their leader.
Azula also underestimated Katara twice. Once during the battle in the crystal catacombs (which she would have lost if Zuko didn't come and interrupt their 1v1) and the second time during the final agni kai.
Azula's grand failure is continuing to underestimate people. Yes she knows how powerful other people can be BUT she also overestimates how powerful she is herself. If you grow up being a golden child, always having to be perfect and being compared to your less powerful older brother, your ego might become the death of you.
I want to point out something else specifically in relation to Sokka:
During the fight on the gondola at the boiling rock Sokka and Zuko would switch out when facing Azula. Azula would be dodging and weaving Zuko's blast but suddenly she gets surprised by Sokka's sword going straight at her face, and she has to catch herself by the edge of the gondola bc she nearly lost her balance. It's very telling that she's able to anticipate Zuko's attacks but falls short when it comes to Sokka. It's again because she both overestimates her own ability and underestimates Sokka's.
She's seemingly always one step ahead of Zuko, Aang, Toph and Suki. It's always during a battle between her and Sokka or Katara that she's caught off guard. Because she refuses to get it in her head that someone from the watertribe, a lowely water peasant, could possibly outmove or outsmart her. She fled the 2v1 with Sokka and Zuko, conveniently so when the prison guards stopped the gondola to saw it off. She got out of the 1v1 with Katara because Zuko had knocked out Aang and was able to help.
The one final 1v1 with Katara, there was nowhere for her to go, and she got taken down. Idk, incredible storywriting and character building.

Guys, when Azulon ordered Ozai to kill Zuko, do y'all think his intention was for Ozai to actually do it? Or do you think Azulon just told Ozai to do that to teach him a lesson about family and didn't expect Ozai to want to go through with it?
I rlly don't know the answer myself. Like i want to believe in the goodness of people but seeing how ruthless Ozai was, he had to get that from somewhere right
I do want to remind people that Azula overheard the conversation and went to Zuko to taunt him with it: "dad's going to kill you! Really, he is." Now idk how well we can trust Azula's version of the story, but i do think this confirms that Azulon did order Ozai to kill his own son.
My question is: did he intent for Ozai not to go through with it so he could question his loyalty and honor and whatnot, and tell him what a disgrace he was for trying to steal Iroh's birthright after the death of his son, OR did he intent for Ozai to go through with it and suffer for it?
Because, i hate to break it to Azulon but neither of these punishments would have worked for Ozai either way. Mans does not care about his son. If he had suggested to kill Azula Ozai would have still done it but at least he would've been a bit more sad about it. But Zuko? Seems like Azulon didn't really know his own son if he thought this would have been some form of a punishment. Ozai was glad to do it, hopping and skipping his way to Zuko's room with a hatchet as soon as he finished his sentence.
Princess Yue vs Princess Azula who gunna win?
That's the most random vs i've ever seen. You also didn't say a vs in what. Like a fight? Well before yue turned into the moon azula would take that bc she's a powerful bender and yue seems like she's never held a weapon in her damn life. After yue got moonified? She'd demolish azula with a single tsunami wave.

Bro i thought azula was zuko's mom 😭
NOW.
