yeah I have another one.
A belated crisis gift for @a-joke-about-bats !
Finished the final panels of Batman: Endgame and I'm going insane. Brucie baby what the hell. If I'm reading it right his final message was "HA". Like the Joker. The same message Joker left after the events of Death of the Family (if I'm remembering right, he used a chemical with the symbol Ha. Unfortunately I don't have the book with me so I can't confirm this :( ). "Ha HA". Their last laugh. Together. I'm going feral. That's not even mentioning everything else that went on but I don't think this has been talked about as much
Haha, yeah... welcome to Batjokes hell. What Scott Snyder did for Batman and Joker is the equivalent of what Bryan Fuller did for Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham, God.
Joker's last message was "HA" as well. Batman and Joker's last words are the same, in DotF and Endgame:
-- Batman (2011) #17
-- Batman (2011) #40
Obvious symmetry and parallels aside, the interpretation of this as Bruce and Joker laughing together... Anon, your MIND. Fuck, I hadn't thought of that. I love it. A shared last laugh from beyond the grave...
And yet it's discordant. They're laughing for opposite reasons. Joker's "HA", accompanied by the symbol of the fly, is flaunting death. It's more of a "I will never actually be gone; like a fly, I will always come back." Joker trounces death by aspiring to be more than human, while Bruce's "HA" is meant to signify his rejection of a godly status... his embrace of mortality. Joker laughs in the face of death because he thinks he's above it, while Bruce laughs in the face of death because he's welcoming it. The image of the harness is a circular reference to the very beginning of Endgame:
Batman is the "deus ex machina". Batman is the God descending to save everyone in the great theatre of Gotham, in the play that is Batman and Joker's eternal fight. And at the end, we see the harness thrown in the trash and discarded... this status of godhood forsaken, because Bruce's choice is always to keep Batman human, and by extension, to die.
They laugh together in death, but they're still separate; their choices still set them apart.
