Molly Hooper is a sweet autistic bisexual who likes nothing more than snuggling down on a Friday evening with her cat on her lap and a glass of white wine.

Well, this took longer than I thought.

Backstory: after Hearse aired on the BBC, @CameronYardeJnr sugggested a Molly spin-off called Molly Hooper Investigates. In my mind, this is what the opening would be like as an animated series. The music would be jaunty and sweet, the colours all pastels, and Louise Brealey’s voice would take you through a monologue about breakfast with Toby and suddenly…chopped ears. Basically death and cotton candy. In addition to the Sherlock cast, there’ll be some new characters too, like Helen-Louise’s talking brain-in-a-jar. She’s a good listener.

In the second episode of Molly Hooper Investigates, Molly and Sally put their heads together to solve a riddle left by Sally’s former chess tutor and formative friend, Eileen, a gifted player who had to be home-schooled because of heart problems and who regarded Sally as her little chess protege until Sally decided to go become a crimefighter instead. While Sally is convinced there is no foul play involved, the appearance of chess pieces from their childhood games at Eileen’s living room where they used to play together convinced Sally that her friend had a few things left unsaid and one final game to play together.

In which there is a treasure hunt across London, lots of legwork and a (sappy) tribute to friendship.

See how the vicar (priest?) is addressing Molly (or possibly Molly and Sherlock) directly here, and it sort of looks like she is replying.  That would mean, I assume, that Molly is the baby’s godmother (and Sherlock probably the godfather), because only the parents and the godparents have lines they actually have to speak in both the Anglican and Catholic christening services.

I can’t imagine why else he would be looking right at her as he speaks, why John would also be looking in her directly, and why it looks like Molly is getting ready to reply.

Agree, which might help explain why Molly was seen caring for the baby during Setlock. But also where are Mary’s other friends? Oh that’s right she doesn’t have any because everything about her is fake.

@sassy1121, well she did kind of burn bridges with Janine!  Though we know that the other two women who were her bride’s maids in TSoT did attend the christening.  We saw pictures of them in costume during setlock.  So why did she not pick one of them?  Why Molly?  

Did she and Molly become friends after TSoT?  I’m actually really curious about this.  Especially given some of the comments that Loo made about Molly and Mary being friends this season.  

I mean if Molly doesn’t know about Mary trying to kill Sherlock, I could see that.  Molly does say that psychopaths are maybe her type in TEH.  Mary would fit that bill.  Anyway, I’m rambling.  It’s just interesting.

Oh man I have thoughts about this. First of all, it’s understandable that maid-of-honor Janine isn’t the godmother given what happened in HLV, but Molly wasn’t a bridesmaid either, and there were two others. So how did Molly get this ‘promotion’ of sorts?

I know there’s a popular headcanon that Mary and Molly are besties – and I’d LOVE to see those two actresses in their own show together – but there’s nothing in this show to support a friendship between their characters. 

In HLV, after the shooting, we see Molly (IRL, not MP), only twice – the boltholes convo, and the very end when she sees Miss Me on the TV. She never interacts with Mary and John.

So yeah, maybe she doesn’t know Mary shot Sherlock. Except…Mrs. Hudson does. She was there for the domestic. And Hudders and Molly and Greg always call each other with concerns about Sherlock and John. For the love, if Molly and Hudders had a phone call worrying about Sherlock reading telegrams, surely they talked about the fact that his best friends wife fucking shot him. 

(Greg, on the other hand, Hudders may not have informed, because that would be turning Mary over to the police, which she’d prob feel was none of her business.)

But I mean…I can’t imagine Hudders didn’t tell Molly. Hudders has a dark past with an abusive ex. Think about what she saw in that domestic scene. What she heard.

She had to tell someone. She’s worried. And frankly, it makes sense that she’d turn to the woman who helped Sherlock the last time he was in this much danger.

And so we’re supposed to believe Molly learned Mary shot Sherlock, nearly killed him, then tried to shoot him again…and she’s OVER it?? Happily accepting the role as godmother of this child? Molly didn’t get a twisted surgery explanation and a fake forgiveness. There’s no fucking way Molly just…doesn’t care.

My prediction is the episode will start off appearing as though Molly never found out about the shooting. But she knows, and what she does with that knowledge, along with whatever weird shit Jim (dead or alive) has in store for her, is going to be a big part of her plot this series.

@deducingbbcsherlock, this is an exciting theory.  Also, that huffpost article today said that the big reveal at the end of the TST is about John.  So we know Molly is a John mirror, right.  And let’s say John and Molly both know about Mary shooting Sherlock.  So they are both going to want to do something about that, right?  

So what if the big reveal about John is that he has been working with Mycroft, or someone in MI-5/MI-6 ever since Mary shot Sherlock, and lets say also, that because Molly was in on The Fall, that she is someone who is trusted implicitly, she is brought in on this plan as well.  

I’m thinking that maybe Molly is being made godmother for a reason.  She’s a purposeful plant, maybe.  I don’t know how that comes about, if John pushes for it, or if she starts to get buddy-buddy with Mary before the baby is born, or whatever.  But it’s an interesting thought.

I’m always interested in dark!Molly theories, but I don’t think she’s actually evil. I do think she’s flawed, as is John (and everyone), and yeah, if there’s a shocking reveal about John this season that’s not entirely sympathetic, perhaps there will be one about Molly.

Maybe something happened right after TRF she hasn’t mentioned. If Jim *did* survive, he could (and honestly, would) have threatened her. If he’s really dead, his successor (*cough*) could be doing the same thing. Maybe she made a deal and is about to face the consequences.

And there’s this…

Really doubt they’d have flown out there if they weren’t in the scene together. So…if it’s a flashback, this is gonna be a bombshell. And if it’s present, also a bombshell. Hell, if it’s MP or not real, probably still a bombshell.

@deducingbbcsherlock, during setlock, we saw that Loo filmed some scenes at a house just down the road from the beach, so it is possible she just walked down to say hi to Andrew after she was finished.
