I write for a living, but I’m pretty certain I lack the talent to sufficiently put what happened during the Penguins’ 4-3 overtime win against Winnipeg into inspiring prose.
Here’s a simple summary of the highlights:
* Sidney Crosby scored his 1,000th career point early in the first period. Then he decided to play the hero in overtime.
* Evgeni Malkin, perhaps symbolic of his entire career, delivered excellence but did it in Crosby’s shadow.
* Kris Letang logged more than 31 minutes to cope with the absence of Olli Maatta and Justin Schultz, both of whom did not return from big hits midway through the second period.
* Chris Kunitz buried a shot to secure Crosby that critical 1,000th point.
* Marc-Andre Fleury made a season-high 44 saves, several of which bailed out a fatigued and at times simply bad blueline.
