Yellow Diamond & Pink Diamond’s Relationship: An Analysis

One of the relationships I think the fandom greatly exaggerates, and while I do think it’s not the only one that’s been affected, I think it’s one of that’s been most affected.

Usually when it comes to the Diamonds, I’ve seen people show nuance for Blue and Pink and White and Pink’s relationships.

I think it’s because out of the four, Yellow is the one that gets heavily criticized and is overall the least popular Diamond.

But I do think that if we can analyze Blue, White and Pink, we should also do the same for Yellow, who is, outside of Rose/Pink, the first Diamond we get introduced to and the first to be mentioned in the entire show.

And, I truly think, Yellow was definitely better than Blue when it came to showing care to Pink.

My evidence???

1. Yellow is implied to have frequently visited Pink despite being so busy.

In the episode where Steven relives Pink’s memories, we see Yellow checking in on Pink in her room with Volleyball. The pair seems to be used to this as they’ve already practiced being professional in front of her. Yellow is even seen to smile. So guess what, Yellow did check in and visit Pink. Maybe not every day or year, but every once in a while.

2. Yellow seems to have more faith in Pink than Blue.

This one might seem like a stretch but look:

Yellow is smiling and seems to just be telling Pink some details, Blue is the one being strict/possibly scolding Pink. This could just be her being “cool” but that isn’t in line with her character. This seems to be her respecting Pink enough to not be yelling/scolding/condescending her. In Reunion, she does think she didn’t think Pink was ready, but that only makes this more impactful. She knew Pink wasn’t ready but still had faith in her.

3. Yellow gave Pink Earth.

Okay this is more speculation, but in Reunion, Yellow says “I gave in”, which heavily implies SHE was the one to give or at least consider giving Pink Earth first. Another HUGE reason I think Yellow did respect Pink more than the other two Diamonds.

4. Can’t go back’s flashback.

In this flashback, we again see Blue as the more strict of the two. Scolding Pink heavily, and what is Yellow doing? Not looking at Pink and being silent. Which isn’t cool, of course, but this and based on my earlier thoughts, gives me the impression Yellow didn’t really scold Pink much unless she was being explicitly annoying(Jungle Moon).

Conclusion? A lot of people make Blue into the one who definitely cared about Pink most+wasn’t strict at all when it seems like Yellow had the biggest soft spot of the two LMAO.

Reminder: I’m not excusing Yellow’s abusive treatment of Pink, she has shown to be abusive, locking Pink up, grabbing her forcefully and yelling at her. But this is to show a more nuanced look at the character instead of the usual fandom’s interpretations.

Aka: Yellow is underrated and I love her.

Wish we saw more of Blue genuinely caring for/loving Pink tbh.

Even if we ignore what she did to Pink with the tower for a second, she never really shows genuine love for Pink. At least I never really thought so.

We only really see a ton of scenes of her crying and whining about how "sad and lonely🥺 " she is and how "She just CAN'T live without PINK 😭". And while I do think this was 100% intentional with her character it would've nice to see more healthy and normal moments with Pink.

The part where she talks to Steven about how she misses when Pink, Yellow, White, and her used to play games at the pool was such a sweet and tragic moment, I wish we got more of it.

Just checking bc your post had a lot of pros for Steven universe and their treatment of villains

Do you think that the resolution with the diamonds was a good redemption?

If not, do you give it grace because the show was being canceled for being gay and having little to no time to wrap up loose ends?

If so, why don’t you give Shera the same treatment?

I hope this doesn’t come across as rude, I’m sorry if it does. I’m genuinely curious and not trying to hate or start but to understand

I personally fall in with the group of SU fans that believe that the Diamonds never really got "redeemed". I mostly think this because, as shown in Future, Steven HATES the Diamonds, mainly White.

Besides, they're never really viewed as good people at any point in the show. And in Future we see that the Diamonds are somewhat trying to fix their mistakes by fixing the corrupted/shattered gems.

I really wish the 5th season wasn't cut off/Future was longer so the Crewniverse could've further characterized the Diamonds leading up to "Change Your Mind".

Meanwhile, in SPOP, we are actively expected to root for/sympathize with Catra and see her as a good person who's "trying her hardest". Catra never really tries to make amends with her victims at any point, even in season 5. Rather than trying to actually have her grow and change, the creators just give her some more trauma (Scorpia leaving, getting chipped by Horde Prime, etc) and call it a day.

Writing Villains/Antagonists: Do's and Don'ts

DO: Actually show your villains/antagonists doing evil/morally bad things!

DON'T: Make them "evil" out of nowhere with no explanation!

DO: Show your villains/antagonists as being explicitly in the wrong!

DON'T: Downplay/justify their actions as good or "not that bad".

DO: Hold your villains/antagonists accountable for their actions and make them correct their mistakes!

DON'T: Give them a slap on the wrist/some trauma to justify their actions!

DO: Notice that even if your villains/antagonists have trauma/pain, it doesn't erase their misdeeds.

DON'T: Use their trauma as a wat to say that their actions don't matter/are completely forgivable.

BONUS TIP: It's ok to make a pure evil villain with not much moral complexity, just don't make them boring!
