A big defense most Catradora fans will use is "Of course Catra hurts Adora! It's a WAR". Which I find fascinating, because the show never acts like it's set during a war.
Half of the time the characters are just waffling around, going on small missions that hardly ever amount to anything. All while making stupid little quips and jokes as if they're just hanging out casually, rather than fighting on the battlefield, trying to rescue and protect innocent civilians.
I'm not saying the show had to be 24/7 death, sadness, seriousness, and pain, but you can balance a silly kids show about magic princesses and a war plot at the same time, right? Steven Universe did that pretty well and that show wasn't even mainly focused on the war.
Besides, the effects of war never even have that heavy on an impact on the characters of SPOP. There's hardly ever a moment where the characters discuss the way fighting the war effort makes them feel. The only time we get even the tiniest inkling of our characters being affected by the war is during Glimmer's half-arc in season 4.
Most saw this arc as a huge case of a character completely switching up out of nowhere, Glimmer suddenly turning into an irrational jerk. But I saw this change as a major plus for her character, most likely because it's the first time one of the good guys (outside of Adora) isn't constantly acting like a irresponsible teen. And what happened when Glimmer took on a rightfully more serious tone, and stopped fooling around all the time and going on hare-brained missions that were massively risky? The whole fandom turned against her and labeled her as a b/tch who didn't care about her friends.
Wow, just wow.
