Chapter 28 WAHOO!
The next time Remus saw Logan, it was a very safe observation to make to say that the man looked haggard.
It was afterschool. Remus was running a little later than usual, and he had pulled up outside school to see William and Patton sitting on the front steps, chatting. A moment later, Logan came down and lowered himself onto the step beside them, and even from here, Remus could tell the man looked exhausted right down to his bones.
Before he could really stop himself, Remus was climbing out of the car to go say hello.
With Virgil on his hip, Remus was half-way across the courtyard before he had the thought that maybe this was a weird thing to do. But he’d gotten this far and it’d look worse if he turned around and went back, and hell, William hadn’t even noticed him yet. He and Patton were still avidly talking, and it was Logan whose eyes first fell on him.
And Remus didn’t miss how Logan’s pinched expression softened as their eyes met.
“Hello, Mr Picani,” Remus called with a smile. “Hello, Patton. Hiya, Will.”
“Oh! Hi, Da,” William smiled back, before turning back to Patton to continue talking.
“Hello!” Patton flung him a greeting as well before his attention went back to William.
“Greetings,” Logan said with a soft smile as Remus sat down next to the teacher on the front steps, shifting Virgil into his lap. “How’re you, Remus?”
“Not too bad, thanks,” Remus shrugged. “I’m going back to work on Monday, finally.”
“That means you’re well enough?”
“It does indeed.”
“I’m glad,” Logan replied. Remus studied Logan’s face closely, almost challenging Logan to look away, but Logan did not. He just sat there, blinking slowly, letting Remus evaluate him.
“I might be well,” Remus said, “but it doesn’t look like you can say the same.”
“I…” Logan’s eyes flicked towards Patton briefly, before he shrugged. “It’s nothing.”
