R2-KT Spotted on Behind-the-Scenes Video for The Force Awakens
The pink R2 unit known as R2-KT, has been very briefly spotted in a recently released Comic-Con Reel for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. First picked up by The 501st Legion, at the 1:50 mark in the behind-the-scenes video, you can spot what appears to be R2-KT on the lower left of the screen for just under a second as the camera pans up. This doesn’t mean that we will end up seeing R2-KT in the final film, but if we are lucky, this Artoo unit might pop up.
For those of you who don’t know why this is a big deal:
R2-KT started off as a real-world replica of an R2-series astromech droid with pink highlights. Albin Johnson, the founder of the 501st Legion, wanted to build a pink droid for his daughter Katie, who was dying from brain cancer (In fact, the “KT” suffix would appear to be a reference to her name). When it was realized that he did not have enough time, R2-KT was built by Jerry Greene, master droid builder, with the help of the R2 Builders Club. R2-KT makes appearances at children’s hospitals, Star Wars Celebration, and charity events in the southeastern United States. A Hasbro action figure of this droid was sold at San Diego Comic-Con 2007, with some of the proceeds going to charity.
