fucking australia’s trying to get everyone to link their government id to their social media accounts else you cant use them anymore, the actual fuck is wrong with this country
please, actually, get fucking mad over this, the entirety of australia basically just banned all social media for anyone who doesnt want to give up their privacy to the government, there was no vote on this, no nothing, they just went ahead and fucking passed this ridiculously privy law and barely anybody’s talking about it the actual fuck
okay so to actually explain what exactly is happening, it’s an age thing. theyve used ‘protect the children’ and ‘let kids be kids’ as a weapon again. anyone under 16 is banned from social media, but to enforce this they have openly admitted everyone will need to link their government id to their social media. this whole ‘protect the kids’ thing was a very obvious trojan horse for getting ppl to give up their privacy.
and yknow, that alone is a very shitty law even without the whole surrendering your private information to the government thing.
theyve made outside uninhabitable, there’s nowhere left to go. public areas have degenerated, theyve turned hanging out into a crime with loitering, streets feel unwalkable sometimes, parents are more wary of letting their kids walk around on their own than they used to be, and now theyre trying to ban one of the main ways kids manage to distract themselves inside the house.
when i was 15 i was depressed and lonely, unable to leave the house very far, no friends, nobody. the one place that helped me feel less alone was online communities. i wouldve killed myself if it werent for the support i recieved on there. and now theyre trying to ban that for future generations, in a world that hates them being both outside and inside.
and even still, this is still a fucking trojan horse to get you to give up your privacy.
A 22 yr old in my org got drunk tuesday night and kinda shit on the fact that I'm running a community cleanup for our chapter. Said something along the lines of "i didn't join up to pick trash." Which really bothers me and it took me a while to figure out why. The whole point of the community cleanup is that we're returning to the neighborhoods where we knocked doors for A4 to help clean up their streets and provide material improvement for free in an effort to build inroads with those neighbors.
Like... if your socialism doesn't include picking uo trash, I'm guessing it also doesn't include doing the dishes, babysitting, or anything else that is important but not prestigious. Idk man, fuck off with that shit. You'll pick up trash and you'll like it until you understand why picking up trash isn't anyone's job but your own. I hate that attitude. If helping and doing activism was always fun and visible and impressive, everyone you know would already be doing it.
do you have any ideas about why so many students are struggling with literacy now? I know that illiteracy and reading comprehension have been issues for years and most americans read at like a 5th grade reading level but I’m curious why it seems to be worse now (pandemic? no child left behind?)
It is everything. There’s not one answer. I could talk about this forever so instead I set a five minute timer on my phone and wrote a list of as many of the many things that are causing this on a systemic level that I could think of:
- It’s parents not reading with their kids (a privilege, but some parents have that privilege to be able to do this and don’t.)
- It’s youtube from birth and never being bored.
- It’s phasing out phonics for sight words (memorizing without understanding sounds or meaning) in elementary schools in the early aughts.
- It’s defunding public libraries that do all the community and youth outreach.
- It’s NCLB and mandating standardized tests which center reading short passages as opposed to longform texts so students don’t build up the endurance or comprehension skills.
- It’s NCLB preventing schools from holding students back if they lack the literacy skills to move onto the next grade because they can’t be left behind so they’re passed on.
- It’s the chronic underfunding of ESL and Special Ed programs for students who need extra literacy support.
- It’s the cultural devaluing of the humanities in favor of stem and business because those make more money which leads to a lot of students to completely disregard reading and writing.
- It’s the learning loss from covid.
- It’s covid trauma manifesting in a lot of students as learned helplessness, or an inability to “figure things out” or push through adversity to complete challenging tasks independently, especially reading difficult texts.
- It’s covid normalizing cheating and copying.
- It’s increasing phone use.
- It’s damage to attention span exacerbated by increased phone use that leaves you without an ability to sit and be bored ever without 2-3 forms of constant stimulation.
- It’s shortform video becoming the predominant form of social media content as opposed to anything text-based.
- It’s starting to also be generative AI.
- It’s the book bans.
what did I miss.
Cannot believe I forgot to also blame charter schools, voucher programs, and the conservative push to lower the teenage working age and get poor kids tracked out of college prep and into vocational training for this. i have let everyone down
the most delicious thing about justice-anders is that anders has been running for so long. he’s never put down roots anywhere. “anders” isn’t even his name. he is convinced that letting himself care for anyone or anything is a death sentence, that it only stands to be ripped from him and that pain isn’t worth it.
enter justice, a friend, who is in love with the world anders has been locked in a mutual hatred of since he was a child. who asks for nothing but anders’s body (something he has always been willing to give), to borrow anders’s tenuous place in the world, and in return, anders has someone he can count on to stay, who cannot be separated from him no matter how hard anyone tries. no matter what either of them may want.
who are either of them to refuse, really
@aces-to-apples you can't just drop this in the tags and expect me not to get mad with the need to read this fic asap
Puritanism is getting worse around the globe and conservatives and fascists will absolutely be first going harder against porn, then use that against queer people. You HAVE to realise this and oppose anti porn measures and laws, be in solidarity with sex workers, and listen to them when they call this shit out. It's going to be vitally important.
Reminder that keeping porn legal means that pornstars have legal protections that they will lose if porn is made illegal. Reminder that keeping porn legal means there are legal standards that can be put in place and enforced which results in better safety for all who are involved in porn's creation.
Reminder that porn will never stop being a thing. It just won't. If it's made illegal, then it will continue to be created and distributed - its just that it will now be done under the table, and with no safety regulations or protections for anyone.
Yes, the hard-right's ultimate plan is to use porn as a gateway from which to attack queer people, but even if that wasn't their plan, you should want to protect the legality of porn anyway.
Keeping porn legal means that the chances of sexual assault on those who work in the industry are reduced, and means that victims of assault are able to pursue legal action against their attackers. Keeping porn legal means that human trafficking is decreased, and it gives victims of human trafficking a legally supported escape route that would be lost if porn were made illegal.
Keeping porn legal means that anyone who is involved in making it - regardless of whether theyre making it simply because they want to, or because they're financially desperate -- is granted a measure of protection that they otherwise would not be. People love to raise the "but porn is made by desperate people who sell their body to survive," but a) some people make porn because they like it, and b) someone who is desperate enough to sell their body will do so regardless of whether it's legal or not. But when it's legal, that desperate person has far more protections and is less likely to be taken advantage of than when it's illegal.
Keeping porn legal protects people. Making it illegal will harm people. It's that simple.
"But it's demeaning!"
That's a you problem. No, really - it's your opinion is that sex work is demeaning, but I've had some really demeaning jobs that were legal and "proper". Just because a job involves sex doesn't mean it has less value than being a salesperson, or an accountant.
To quote the great John Waters.
It should also be noted that, much like how miscarrisges get prosecuted under abortion laws, laws that criminalize being in porn will mean that instead of our current laws punishing people for *distributing* revenge porn, it will punish the people non-consensually *in* revenge porn.
Putting the term "male gaze" on top of the fridge until everyone remembers that it refers to a cinematographic trend and not the act of looking at things while being a man
male gaze is when TV and movies frame the world as if the viewer is automatically a man, specifically a heterosexual man. this manifests in how women are presented onscreen especially
Words Mean Things guys
people always talk about evil clones like oooh a dark mirror oohh what if you saw what are cruel person you were/are capable of becoming. and well yes but what if you were the evil clone. what if you looked in the mirror and what you saw was so bright it blinded you. what if you had to know exactly how good you could have been.
The arcane tag is so funny right now
The irony of doing deforestation in a land that already has nearly no forests, only to place some giant bird-killing things there in the name of “green energy.” Don’t let me even get started about how much harmful manufacturing processes need to take place to make wind turbines.
>the trees that were cut down were a commercial crop that would have been cut down regardless
>this was over a 20 year period that they planted 272 million more trees
>That 14 million is less than 1% of the total woodland area in scotland
why do these types even use the internet anyway
Also, scottlands peat bogs are excellent at carbon sequestration, and misguided attempts at “"reforesting”“ the peat bogs back in the 80s and 90s resulted in hundreds of thousands of failed trees and destroyed the actual natural habitat of peat and heath.
Assume that anyone posting a screenshot of an article headline with no link to the actual source is pushing an agenda. Pause. Think. What is the purpose of the posting? Why isn’t there a way to verify what the post is saying or makes you assume? What information could be in the article that they are hiding by not providing?
Now search for the article by the headline and author and read it yourself
Project 2025 ain't gonna roll out all at once. So what we're gonna wanna do is make passing each individual part of it as difficult as possible, so there's less to undo once we finally get this country back on the rails.
Resist every step and do not get distracted by stupid bullshit. Distracting people with stupid bullshit is one of Trump's favorite political techniques. We saw it all over the place in the first term.
Trump will say something like "You know the Hispanics actually punch kittens, it's what they do."
And the news will be like "TRUMP SAID HISPANIC PEOPLE PUNCH KITTENS" for three weeks.
And while they're doing that the Republicans in Congress have quietly deleted healthcare.
Do not get distracted by stupid bullshit. Trump is a dancing monkey whose greatest asset is the ability to yank the spotlight off of everyone else. Keep your eyes on Congress.
Endlessly diabolical how you can't say words like rape and suicide uncensored without either being criticised by idiots or punished by conglomerates.
It's not r*pe, it's rape. It's not su*cide, it's suicide. Not unalive, dead. The backbone needs to be reintroduced en masse because softening the blow of these concepts with advertising language does absolutely nothing but allow people unaffected by them to feel not even a sting of what they can do, prompting inaction.
And it's been proven that on certain websites, you don't even face a repercussion for using the words as they are. People just started censoring themselves because they feared the potential lack of views and likes and followers which is so nasty itself.
I'm sorry but I have to share these tags
Hey, USAmericans? Wanna save your country? Run For Something!
Hey, the ACLU is getting people to send letters to your Reps to have Congress pass the No Kings Act.
This act would make constitutional amendments to ensure that even sitting presidents are held liable for their actions. That NOBODY is above the law.
Their goal is 150k messages sent and at the time of writing this they're about 2.1k off from that goal!
ACLU gives you a prefilled message that you can edit to send to make the process easier, and will send it out for you.
This only takes a few minutes!
Not unreality, not a joke: I have never posted such a thing before here but- Please do this one for whatever good it might result in.
